BREWERIES AND LICENSED TRADE IN THE UPPER CALDER VALLEY from 1800 was the subject of the talk given to the local History Society by Peter Robinson. He told the story of the inns and beerhouses of our area during the period of industrialisation and population growth. Read report. (21 Dec)

HEBBLE HOLE BRIDGE REPAIRS: Contractors have started to repair the old stone clapper bridge at Hebble Hole. They will rebuild part of the pier and then hoist up the broken sections of the bridge. Read more (12 Dec)

THE STORY OF THE FUSTIAN CO-OPERATIVE AT NUTCLOUGH MILL was the subject of the talk given by Andrew Bibby to the History Society. This Hebden Bridge landmark was home to a worker-run co-op which ran, at a profit, for almost 50 years achieving national and international fame. Read report (1 Dec)

PREPARING FOR BAD WEATHER: The Met Office has issued an amber warning for freezing rain across the region for Saturday 15 December. This is in addition to the existing yellow warning for snow/ ice issued yesterday. Read more.

DAVE NELSON'S CHRISTMAS SINGALONG will be on Saturday 15 December, with tickets available from Monday 26 November. The event, a regular feature for almost 30 years, is an old-fashioned ‘round the piano’ sing along to all those favourite Christmas songs and carols. More info

LITTLE THEATRE: THE 39 STEPS The Theatre's last production of the year is The 39 Steps, Patrick Barlow's stage adaptation of John Buchan's novel. It follows the adventures of hero Richard Hannay running from a gang of spies after he finds out about secret German plans. Read more (16 Nov)

CHOIR LEADER KATE HOWARD RETURNS TO THE CALDER VALLEY Kate, a former resident of Hebden Bridge, is a performer and teacher of singing with an international reputation. On 17 November, she returns to lead a day of singing which will be hosted by Calder Valley Women Singers the group she set up over 25 years ago. Read more

FLOODS NEARLY THREE YEARS ON - PREPARE FOR WINTER WEATHER: Almost three years since the flooding in our area on Boxing Day 2015, Calderdale Council and its partners are reminding people of the importance of being prepared as well as highlighting the work already done to improve flood resilience. COMMUNITY TOILET SCHEME LAUNCHES IN MYTHOLMROYD The public toilets in Mytholmroyd have been demolished. While options for toilet provision elsewhere in the town are being investigated, Calderdale has been working with local businesses to encourage them to take part in a community toilets scheme. HEBDEN BRIDGE MEDICAL CENTRE APPOINTMENTS CHANGES. From 30 August, there will no longer be a telephone duty doctor system for urgent appointments. Replaced, from Mon - Fri, 8am - 10.30am, by a walk-in surgery at the Mytholmroyd Medical Centre. Read more and see Forum (25 Aug)

CALL FOR ELECTRIFICATION OF THE CALDER VALLEY LINE which would improve journey times, make services more reliable, be cheaper to run, help cut congestion on the roads and reduce impacts on the environment. Read more (24 Aug)

BRIGHT SARI IN A DARKENED STREET is a new novel by Ian Emberson, who died in 2013 and was well known as a writer and artist in the Upper Valley. His wife Catherine has made this previously unpublished work available. The Mytholmroyd scheme involves the relocation of Caldene Bridge, which is one of two crossing points over the Calder in Mytholmroyd centre and currently constricts the amount of water that can flow downriver.
