Wainsgate Concert: You Are Wolf
Tuesday, 5 June 2018
Wainsgate Chapel’s concert season continues on Saturday 9 June with alternative folk artist You Are Wolf, also known as composer and vocalist Kerry Andrew.
Using piano, synthesizer, loop station and ukulele to augment her distinctive voice, she will be performing tracks from her latest album Keld: a collection of traditional songs, alongside some original ones - all of which are themed around freshwater and feature stories about banshees, water sprites, wild swimming, vengeful rivers and more.
You Are Wolf brings these ancient songs and stories into the present, with bold arrangements inspired by leftfield pop, new classical music and electronica.
You Are Wolf has had exclusive play on Radio 3's Late Junction, and was also on BBC Radio 3's The Verb in January.
As a soloist, her debut album, ‘Hawk to the Hunting Gone’ explored British birds and folklore, and her first EP ‘Hunting Little Songs’ was released in 2011.
Elsewhere, as Kerry Andrew, she is a composer of experimental vocal and choral music and is the winner of four British Composer Awards. She has written for The Guardian and is an occasional presenter on BBC Radio 3. Most recently she appeared on BBC2 as the chair of the jury for the 2018 Young Musician of the Year.
Kerry has made previous visits to Hebden Bridge, both as lead singer with jazz fusion 11-piece Metamorphic and also with experimental acapella group Juice. Her connections to the town spread further through her compositions which are regularly performed by the Hepton Singers and upper-voice chamber ensemble Alyssium.
You Are Wolf’s concert starts at 3pm with a supporting set from Hebden Bridge jazz singer Charlie Carr together with pianist Dave Nelson. Tickets are £10, £8 and £3 for under 18s and are only available at the door.
