Swimming Pool latest

Friday, 6 July 2018

The HebWeb has been sent an update on just where we are with plans for the proposed swimming pool.

This has been a topic the HebWeb has covered regularly since we started in 1995 and when we then hoped we might have a pool in Hebden Bridge.

Campaigners in Hebden Bridge in the 1980s and 1990s raised funds for the pool to be situated in Victoria Road, Hebden Bridge where the land for a Swimming Pool was purchased. For reasons which are unclear, this land was sold for development without any local consultation. Those who gave money still feel short changed. Flats have since been built on the former swimming pool site. The proceeds of the sale of the land raised nearly a million and this is now earmarked for a pool next to Mytholmroyd Community Centre.

Here is this week's statement received from the Swimming Pool Association:

"The annual general meeting of the Hebden Royd & District Swimming Pool Association was held at the Town Hall, Hebden Bridge on Thursday, 24th May, 2018

"The trustees are, Coun. Mrs Dorothy Sutcliffe, Chair Richard H. Marshall, Secretary, Nick Wilding, Mrs Deborah Robinson and Mrs Margaret Blakely.

"The accounts for the period ended 31st March, 2017, showing that the available funds were £864,346.Following the flood in December, 2015, and the refurbishment of Mytholmroyd Community Centre, it had been decided to attach the swimming pool to the Community Centre.

"The pool will be 25 mtrs; with four lanes, and is a community pool, as recommended by the Amateur Swimming Association. Unfortunately, owing to the activity of the Environment Agency, it will be at least another 18 months before building work could begin."

Nick Wilding has told the HebWeb, "If you remember, I wrote to Hebweb with an article about five years ago, which took an optimistic view as to the future construction of a pool and I was later delighted in November 2015 when we took a firm decision as a group to go ahead and build it. Then we all know what happened, just one month later, on Boxing Day 2015! I always believed that the pool should be attached to the Community Centre and not another building with its own reception, so that is at least one good thing to emerge from the floods. Nothing can happen until the Environment Agency has completed all of the Caldene Bridge construction work, so I am afraid that building the pool is not going to be exactly imminent!"
