A local view of Carols and Christmas
Diana Monahan
Using mainly local materials, Diana will provide a brief history of carols including the history of the Cragg Carols and a look at past local Christmas traditions.
Health Warning!! Diana's interest in local history began through investigating the history of her house in 1992. The extent of her research widened to include the houses and past inhabitants of her neighbourhood and has continued expanding ever since. She soon found herself on the Local History Committee and she is still there! (Luckily for the Society!)

Frack-free Planet Fundraiser
Trades Club, 1.30pm
Do you play, pray or protest for our planet? Are these all different – or the same? With earthquakes and sink holes all around, we know beyond doubt that humanity's greed is destroying itself in so many ways. So do we leave the Earth to look after itself or look into it? Perhaps you've heard what's happening to the land and people in America?
Amazing array of local talent
At very short notice, we have an amazing array of local talent performing at the Trades – what better line-up than Terry Logan & Dave Manley; Charlie Carr & Dave Nelson; the Revelator Band and Nick Hall's powerful music and message? All are eager to add their voices to the huge and growing song and dance fracking has caused.
Films, photos, music, food and fun
So get down the Trades for films, photos, food and fun on a cosy Sunday afternoon, 11 December – and find out. As well as live entertainment, we've got the fabulous Frack-free Nanas descending from Lancashire and Ryedale – either side of us have got high court judicial reviews in London finally deciding whether it really is OK to frack their homes.
If you care at all, come and reconnect - to keep our Lancashire and the planet frack-free.

Children's Laureate Chris Riddell is visiting the Book Case

Chris's books like the Goth Girl and the Ottoline series have become modern classics. He is a prolific illustrator with a magical quality to his detailed line drawings and an instinctive gift for bringing characters to life, both in his own writing and in his collaborations with other authors.
We are extremely privileged that he is coming to Hebden Bridge.
After such a terrible start to 2016 with the devastating floods, it is amazing to end the year on such on such a high note and to be able to give local children (and adults!) the opportunity to meet the Children's Laureate and have the chance get beautiful individually signed copies of his books.
"I want to put the joy of creativity, of drawing every day, of having a go and being surprised at what one can achieve with just a pencil and an idea at the heart of my term as Laureate."

Women, down tools! The women machinists' strike in Hebden Bridge, Autumn 1916
Andrew Bibby
For six weeks in November-December 1916 more than two thousand Hebden Bridge sewing machinists and garment workers were on strike, the vast majority of them women. It was the first time local women had taken industrial action, two years into a war which had seen rampant inflation and a rapid fall in living standards. Exactly a hundred years on, Andrew Bibby will discuss the context to the dispute, what happened in the town during the strike, and what took place thereafter.
Andrew Bibby is a freelance writer, who has lived in Hebden Bridge for 28 years. He is the author of several books on the Pennine landscape and the outdoors. His history of Hebden Bridge's famous Nutclough co-operative fustian mill All Our Own Work was published last year (Merlin Press).

'The Hammer Blow' Book Talk
- How 10 women disarmed a warplane
7pm, at The Bookcase, Market Street, Hebden Bridge.
On 29 January 1996, a small group of women broke into a British Aerospace factory in Lancashire and used hammers to disarm a Hawk warplane about to be sold to Indonesia for use against civilians in occupied East Timor. They were arrested, charged with £2.4m of criminal damage, and refused bail.
After six months in prison, the women were acquitted of all charges by a Liverpool jury in a court case that effectively put Britain's arms trade on trial. The verdict generated national media coverage and inspired countless activists across the globe.
Join us to hear one of the women, Andrea Needham, talk about the action and its lessons for today, and read from her recently published memoir 'The Hammer Blow'.

Under the Same Sky
Julia Ogden is one of our local artists painting some new work for Under the Same Sky. Her walks to Gibson Mill, Heptonstall and Stoodley Pike looking across the valley or hills have informed the colours of her paintings; watching the seasons change under the same sky! The changing skies show a new side to our valley's character and the landscape welcomes visitors to Yorkshire. Wherever you are you are always under the same ever-changing yet faithful sky.

Hebden Bridge Partnership AGM
Our Town 2016
Anyone who has been to the Partnership's AGM ("Hebden Bridge: Our Town") will know that this is a special occasion. Last year, no less than 39 local organisations and groups took advantage of the invitation to say a few short words about their activities and future plans. In fact, we had so many groups that we had to shrink the traditional three minute slots to two-and-a-half minutes.
We hope that you will make sure that any organisations you are involved with take up our offer of a slot – and that you will help swell the numbers by being with us in person yourself. The key information to give you at this stage is the date: Monday October 24th, with a 7pm start. We have booked the Town Hall's Waterfront Hall for the occasion.
The Undercover Hippy
Billy Rowan, aka The Undercover Hippy will be at the Trades this Friday (21st) from 8pm. Combining intelligent, provocative lyrics with dangerously catchy hooks and a feel good groove, this is thoughtful music to shake your arse to.

Buried Alive? Past funeral customs in Calderdale
David Glover
A light-hearted but informative survey of funeral customs from early times down to about 1900 with stories which are spooky, quirky, and even amusing. Learn who was buried alive in Halifax Parish Church, and hear about the burial of eccentric Jonathan Walsh in his own Southowram field. Where did the drunken gravedigger choose to sleep? Were Quakers once buried standing upright, as recorded by Oliver Heywood? Which part of a man's body was given its own burial? This presentation is not likely to cause melancholy!
Born in suburban London, David has lived in Halifax since 1986. He has worked in Local Government, Commercial Stationery retail, at a Bookshop, and as a Family Historian. He has had a lifelong fascination with national and royal history. However, it has been his more recent studies into Local History, which have established him as a regular contributor to the Halifax Courier, and as a speaker around West Yorkshire. He is currently Chair of The Friends of Lister Lane Cemetery (Halifax), Vice-Chair of Halifax Civic Trust, and Publications Officer for Halifax Antiquarian Society.
Working together for a new vision of security. Sunday 9th October from 1.30-4.30pm to discuss what security means for us, for society and for our planet.

Jean-Georges Simon - The English Works
As part of the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival the Artsmill present 'The English Works' bringing together paintings and drawings by artist Jean-Georges Simon (1894-1968).
Born in Hungry, travelled in Europe, particularly Paris, settling in London and ending up in Harrogate, Yorkshire. He split the last 30 years of his life between Yorkshire, Chelsea and Paris, drawing, painting and gathering ideas. His work centres on the human form, townscape and still life but predominantly people. Always a humanist, Simon's work managed to achieve a calm tenderness and harmony, often with humour, both after and during one of the most turbulent periods in history. His lively characterful drawings made on the street and in pubs are a vibrant record of this period in Yorkshire and London.
An Associate of Modigliani and Picasso, Simon's paintings reveal a deeply poetic mind, alert to problems, both artistic and human, of the first half of the century and are a fascinating and original contribution to the achievements of his generation.
Some art works are for sale and the exhibition runs from Wednesday 22nd June to Sunday 17th July at the David Wright Gallery, Artsmill, Linden Mill, Linden Road, Hebden Bridge, HX7 7DP. Opening times are from 11am to 4pm Wednesday to Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday) www.artsmill.org or artsmill@lindenmill.co.uk

Exhibition: WW1 and Hebden Royd, 100 years on
World War 1 claimed 230 local lives during the years for 1916 and 1917, but what was life in Hebden Royd really like during the war?
Mike Crawford has drawn on the experience of the area to create a fantastic and informative exhibition which is being displayed at Hebden Bridge Town Hall during March. The timing of the exhibition reflects the introduction of conscription on 2nd March 1916, but it also examines the rise of the conscientious objector in the area.
Now two years into the War, women play an ever increasing role, and impact on home life is clearly evident with soaring food prices and coal shortages. The exhibition explores what life was like for those who were on the home front during this time.
The exhibition will be displayed in the Hebden Bridge Town Hall foyer until the end of March.
Celebrate the re-opening of several Mytholmroyd businesses this weekend. Events are being held at The Blue Teapot, Aux Delices, The Libertine and The Dusty Miller.

Artsmill Exhibition: Heather Boxhill
'In the beginning….red, yellow and blue, the testament of Mary, according to Colm Toibin' (detail) part of triptych. Oil on gesso on board, 2015, 30cm X 30cm
Heather Boxall is a painter and printmaker and employed as Head of School at Bradford School of Art.
She studied Fine Art at Winchester School of Art and an MA in Printmaking at Bradford School of Arts & Media. Heather is currently studying for a PhD at Northumbria University. Her research is concerned with colour and the monochrome.
Her work draws on references from texts and poems, the natural world and religious symbolism in 15th century painting. Colour provides a sense of place, a liminal experience, a memory. Her paintings explore the relevance and ambiguity of colour through the monochrome.
As one of the most reductive forms of painting, with the abandonment of figure/ground relationships, the monochrome first appears to represent 'nothing'. Yet the complexity of working with a single colour brings instead a unique focus on colour's symbolic, optical and material qualities.

Hebden Comedy Club heads upmarket!
The Hebden Bridge Comedy Club returns to The Old Gate a week later than usual, on Sunday 21st February with possibly its most upmarket selection of comedians to date.
James Sherwood has incorporated a number of self- penned, original comic songs into his act. Although this involves lugging a keyboard around with him, it's worth it – songs about grammatical inaccuracies and failed nightclub courtships have had audiences literally crying with laughter. James contributes the funnies to radio shows across the BBC, including The Now Show, The News Quiz and BBC7.
Posh boy Andrew Watts was a high flying solicitor in London but his love of performing stand up late at night across the UK soon conflicted with his employers policy of starting work on time. Somewhat predictably, he now works as a full time comic. His distinctive style and original material have won him appearances on ITV and Comedy Central.
His first full-length Edinburgh shows have all received five- or four-star reviews and he was also runner-up to a certain Jack Whitehall in the Amused Moose Laugh-Off although Andrew is way posher than Jack.
Guest act for the evening is Tom Taylor and affable Lancastrian Mike Wilkinson comperes.
The show starts at 8pm prompt and tickets are priced at £8.50 from the Old Gate or online at www.hebdenbridgecomedy.co.uk

"I was on holiday in Egypt when I received a text telling me about the flooding and I couldn't believe the scenes of devastation I was seeing online. I really wanted to help but I was thousands of miles away and then I thought there would be no harm in sending a few emails out to who would be up for a benefit gig... I was absolutely gob smacked by the standard of acts who replied and now the whole thing has taken on a life of it's own".
Calderdale MBC have hired out the theatre free of charge and all money raised will be split between Community Foundation For Calderdale and Upper Calder Valley Renaissance
