Christmas Pop Up Emporium
For the first time, renowned artists from Hebden Bridge are working together to make a Christmas Emporium in Hebden Bridge Town Hall. From Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th December, part of the Town Hall will be transformed into a treasure trove of beautiful and unusual gifts.
Louise Lockhart, Lizzie Lockhart, Jane Revitt and the artists from Made in the Valley live here and sell their work nationally and internationally. This is a chance to see their work under one roof.
Louise Lockhart's unique illustrated products will be on offer, with creative party games for Christmas Day. Jane Revitt will have a range of beautiful cushions and tea towels featuring maps of the local area. The team at Made in the Valley have a fun range of printed textiles as well as beautiful ceramics. And many more surprises are promised!
The Town Hall's cafe will be serving a range of festive treats and there will be a brazier in the courtyard to keep off the winter chill!
The Emporium will be open from Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th December. Open 10am to 5pm.
Ursula Holden Gill, an award winning storyteller with an international reputation, will be telling festive stories around the fire on Friday 19th between 4pm and 5pm and Dave Nelson's Singalong is on Sat 20th Dec.

Shaggy Dog Storytellers Christmas Special
Friday, 19th December at Stubbing Wharf pub. £7 entrance. Genial Geordie giant, Keith Donnelly hosts and is lead performer for the 2014 Shaggy Dog Christmas Celebration.
Members might like to join the SD team for a pre Clubnight celebration - upstairs at the Stubbing Wharf from 6.45. Storytelling, songs, rhymes and other festive fare start at 8pm. Christmas week gets off to great start on Saturday 20th December at the Town Hall, with Dave's ever-popular annual Family Christmas Singalong.

It's Christmas (well, it soon will be) but don't expect any festive tunes at the next True Faith at Nelson's Wine Bar, Crown Street, Hebden Bridge, held on Saturday 20 December 2014, 9pm to 1am (admission free). It's strictly a Noddy Holder-free zone as we play all those great songs from back when we had daft sticky-up hair and acted all moody in great-coats, even in mid-summer. You know - The Smiths, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, New Order, The Stone Roses, Blur, Blondie the whole lot of 'em.
We'll also get a bit dancey as the night wears on with Chic, Daft Punk, Talking Heads, Heatwave, Deee-Lite, De La Soul and Grandmaster Flash probably getting turned up good and loud. There will be new stuff, too – from Nada Surf, The Rifles, Editors, White Lies etc.

Nick Wilding
It's 200 years since the original Stoodley Pike tower was built, and Nick Wilding organized celebrations for the event earlier this year. He will argue that the tower is more special internationally than has been previously recognized and the talk will be illustrated with photos and film of the celebration.
Nick Wilding is a filmmaker/historical researcher who, in the course of a long career, has made a variety of different documentaries about the Calder Valley, based upon his own extensive archive of interviews with local people. He is still interviewing people today, but is sorry to say that he could not find anyone old enough to reminisce about this particular subject.

Remembrance Christmas Carol Service
Local Funeral Directors, Valley Funeral Service & Robertshaw Greenwood, are helping families this Christmas by inviting them to pay tribute to their loved ones with special memorial Christmas trees. Family and friends can write a message, or their loved ones name on a star to be hung on the Christmas Trees.
A special Remembrance Carol Service will be held at Mytholmroyd Methodist Church on Tuesday 2nd December at 7.00p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and people will be invited to light a candle in memory of their loved ones during the service. Any member of the community is welcome to remember their loved one with us, not just families we have had the privilege to look after.

Her husband Trevor is currently serving a harsh three-year jail sentence, following the July 2014 incident at Eastwood Recycling Centre.
The afternoon's entertainment starts at 2pm, finishing at 6. Entry is £5; there will be a raffle, and excellent curries will be available in exchange for a donation of your choice.

Author Event - Julian Hoffman - 'The Small Heart Of Things'
7pm at The Book Case.
The Book Case is delighted to present award winning author Julian Hoffman, who will be reading from, and signing copies of 'The Small Heart Of Things'. An up and coming figure in the current reinvention of the literature of place, Julian lives in the Prespa Lakes area of Northern Greece, where he works monitoring birdlife.
His book deals with his experiences in this landscape, and moves outwards to other places to develop his themes. He uses a myriad of examples to show how by developing our perception, we can find a closer relationship with the natural world, and by doing so, become more connected to it and to our selves.
Julian has strong connections with the Upper Calder Valley, and is looking forward to the chance to reconnect with people here.

WILLS, INVENTORIES AND ECONOMIC ACTIVITY in the Parish of Halifax at the end of the Seventeenth Century
Alan Petford
This talk explores ways in which probate documents can illuminate how the people of the parish of Halifax made their livings in the past and use these same documents to catch a glimpse inside local houses at the end of the seventeenth century.
Alan is a WEA Lecturer and sometime Lecturer in Local and Regional History in The University of Leeds. He is co-author and author of several publications, including, most recently 'Horribile Dictu', Ecclesiology and the Unitarians in Northern England; The Diaries of Cornelius Ashworth and Sowerby Probate Records.

Poetry Night with Tom Cleary and Gaia Holmes
Tom Cleary and Gaia Holmes will be reading their poetry at The Stubbing Wharf Pub in Burnley Road, Hebden Bridge.

Upper Calder Valley Renaissance 10th anniversary exhibition and conference
will take place at the Town Hall on 21 November and entitled 'Taking stock and looking forward' to celebrating the the scheme's achievements, and looking to the next phase.
The Lost Chord Ensemble
Christopher Irvin, who conducts the local Little Theatre Choir and also the White Rose Orchestra in Leeds, has a wealth of light music including some of his own compositions.
Sunday 23rd November at 7:30 pm, he is inviting musicians (with their music stand) to come to the Little Theatre in Hebden Bridge to play some light music selections such as Ketelbey's Wedgwood Blue and Memories of Lehar.

To give you a little taster of what's in store there will be free mulled wine, free hot potatoes and free face painting for the children, plus a visit from Santa Claus. Magician Paul Dawson (Mr Balloon Man) is also coming along for the afternoon so prepare to be amazed! We're also delighted that Councillor Jonathan Timbers, Hebden Royd Mayor, will be attending.

A November Day

In forgotten boxes in an attic, a woman discovers the story of her grandfather, a survivor of the First World War, and his unexpected encounter with a stray dog who knew no boundaries. With evocative puppet characters, live music and an ever-changing set, Thingumajig Theatre presents a timeless fable on war and the miracle of friendship when all else seems lost.
"A November Day" marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One. Originally created in 2008 in association with the Imperial War Museum North, the play offers a gentle, personal voice in this year's commemorations.

Geoff Tansey will open an evening discussion on food, power and poverty with an illustrated talk drawing on his recent visits to China. There will also be an opportunity for those attending to discuss their thoughts on the newly established Fabian Commission on Food and Poverty in the UK, which Geoff is chairing.

Some time ago BEAT had Geoff speaking at a public meeting in Heptonstall, which was attended by 57 people.
We all need food, so most of us are interested in what we eat, where it comes from and how it is produced. An increasing number of people in Blackshaw Parish are growing some of their own food, for example in their gardens or with the Charlestown Allotment Group. Some of that produce is sold at the Great Rock Coop.
Geoff Tansey's talk will be followed by a Q&A session and a short BEAT AGM – see elsewhere in this newsletter.

Stories from the Floor Night at Shaggy Dog storytellers Club
Friday, 31st October, at Stubbing Wharf. The renowned Shaggy Dog club sets out on its 21st year with one of its audience participation events.
It's Halloween, the nights are drawing in and it's the traditional time for storytelling: tales of mystery, devilment and misadventure and stories to keep us warm through the coming winter. Bring light to our darkness with your story new or old, a monologue or a narrative song.
It's the night when the audience provides the entertainment. Stories from the Floor nights attract tellers from near and far. If you've not been before, but would like to take part, remember that stories are told but not read and should be limited to 7 minutes duration.
Doors will open from 7.15 pm for our AGM (but come and grab a seat!) and the entertainment commences from 8pm. £7 entrance with concessions for under 18s.

VIEWS FROM TWO COMMUNITIES ON THE OUTBREAK OF WAR IN 1914

This is an international multi-media event. Three speakers will present thoughts on local experience and reactions to the outbreak of war in Hanau (Germany) and in Calderdale. Themes will include recruitment and local welfare issues.
The presenters are Nick Wilding, local film maker, Wolfgang Hombach, formerly Director of the Erich Kastner Schule in Maintal and Mike Crawford, local historian and author of Going to War: People of the Calder Valley and the First Weeks of the Great War.
An exhibition of material from the early years of World War I is at Hebden Bridge Town Hall from 27th October to 30th November.

The rich heritage of the area includes standing stones, crosses, churches and chapels, packhorse bridges, many fine 17th century houses built by yeoman clothiers. Their successors built mills and streets of terraced houses. Many of these were included in the local list of buildings compiled by Peter in the early 1980s; most of the slides to be shown tonight were taken during this period and provide a snap-shot of local architectural treasures that have been protected by the listed building legislation.
Peter was for some 20 years Secretary of the Local History Society while living at Akroyd near Pecket Well. In 1982 he was appointed Calderdale's Architectural Historian to undertake a re-survey of the Borough for Listed Buildings, and then was appointed an Inspector of Historic Buildings to continue his survey of the rest of West Yorkshire. In the 1990s he worked for WYAS as its Historic Buildings Officer before becoming a Conservation Officer in South Yorkshire until retirement 3 years ago. He is now looking to move back to live in the Halifax area in the near future.

Parliamentary Candidates debate the NHS
The third of four debates between the three Parliamentary Candidates for the 2015 General Election - Conservative MP Craig Whittaker, Labour Candidate Josh Fenton-Glynn and Liberal Democrat Candidate Alistair MacGregor will take place on Thursday 9th October at 7pm in the Ted Hughes Theatre at Calder High.
The first half of the evening will be devoted to the issue of local NHS provision with questions taken from the floor. The second half will be on any issue raised by members of the audience.

Calder Valley Youth Theatre - Open Mic Night and Play in a Day
The evening will be held at our rehearsal rooms on the first floor at Hebden bridge Town Hall.
The evening will kick off at 7pm with our Play in a Day where some of our younger cast members will be performing a play which they will have rehearsed (Yes, you've guessed it) In a Day!!! We have around 20 children taking part and they would love an audience to come and watch. For some of them, it will be their first time on a stage. In recent years, we have discovered some incredibly talented children who have gone on to perform in our main shows and onto other musical projects.
After Play in a Day, we will have our ever popular Open Mic Night. So if you want to come and try a new song, either on your own or with a friend, or if you can tell a few jokes or play an instrument, please come and show us what you can do. Or, if you just want to watch, that would be good too. This is open to the whole family and we hope you will come along and support our cast and members.
The whole evening is just £3 which will go to support the cost of producing Starlight Express. It is a great opportunity to come along in an informal atmosphere and talk to some of our volunteers, members and cast, so please don't be shy, pop in, have a chat, watch the Play in a Day, listen to some music and see if your children would like to get involved with CVYT.

On the eve of the outbreak of the First World War, the young men of Accrington responded to Kitchener's call for a 'New Army' and became the smallest town in England to form a 'Pals Volunteer Regiment.' The play spans the period up to the Battle of the Somme in 1916, when the men who jauntily marched off to war faced the brutal reality of the trenches.
However the play is less about the men at the front and more about the women they left behind and how they dealt with their emotional losses. A deeply humane play dramatising a close- knit community caught up in historical events. A fitting choice of play to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the war in 1914.

Heptonstall Festival
This year's Heptonstall Festival will take place on Saturday 20 September and will build on the tremendous success that was the 2013 festival. There will again be two stages (on Weaver Square and in the old church ruins) along with the fun-filled morning children's parade and an evening's classical concert. This year's theme is The Wizard of Oz, so dig out those red shoes and remember – there's no place like home!

Artsmill Talk: Richard Wincer
The popular and much acclaimed exhibition of Richard Wincer's recent paintings at Artsmill, Hebden Bridge continues until August 31st. Such has been the reception that the artist has been commissioned to talk about his inspiration and approaches to oil painting.

To mark the First World War centenary, Hebden Royd Town Council, with Pennine Horizons and the Local History Society have organised a programme of events.
A NIGHT AT THE CINEMA 1914
Marking the centenary of the start of World War I, this glorious miscellany of comedies, adventure films, travelogues and newsreels recreates a typical night out at the cinema in 1914, when going to the cinema was still a new, exciting and democratic form of entertainment.
With feature films still rare, the programme was an ever-changing roster of short films with live musical accompaniment; and this selection of films – including scenes of suffragettes protesting at Buckingham Palace, Allied troops celebrating Christmas and an early sighting of one of cinema's greatest icons - is sound tracked by a score from composer Stephen Horne.

A Hayward Touring Exhibition

A new Hayward Touring exhibition of screen-prints by Eduardo Paolozzi will open at Artsmill as part of a national tour and coinciding with the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival.
Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924–2005) was one of the pioneers of the pop art movement in the UK. Born in Scotland, Paolozzi was a compulsive collector and a jumbler of icons. He is equally revered for his mechanistic sculptures and his kaleidoscopic print projects. The artist, who described himself as 'a wizard in Toytown', transformed the mundane, the derelict and the mass-produced into images that zap with electric eclecticism and impress with their graphic complexity. 'Carrots into pomegranates!'
Paolozzi's canny alchemy is vividly apparent in General Dynamic F.U.N, a series of fifty screenprints and photolithographs created between 1965 and 1970. Here Paolozzi employs the technologies of mass-reproduction and gorges on its idols – the household names and familiar faces of consumer advertising, high fashion and Hollywood. The artist's friend and sometime collaborator, J.G. Ballard, described General Dynamic F.U.N as a 'unique guidebook to the electric garden of our minds'.
The prints, which bear idiosyncratic titles such as 'Totems and Taboos of the Nine-to-Five Day'; 'Twenty Traumatic Twinges' and 'Cary Grant as a Male War Bride', do not occupy a rigid sequence but can be assembled and viewed in any order. For Paolozzi, the modern age, exposed as ephemera, is a necessarily fragmented collision of visual stimulus and influence, and his work is a 'health warning for an uncreative and thriftless society'.

Calder Valley Youth Theatre will be holding a Jumble Sale on Saturday 5th July at Hebden Bridge Town Hall from 10.30 am. If you have any clothing, bric-brac, toys, games or anything else you would like to donate to us, please let us know or bring it along to one of our rehearsals at The Town Hall.
The Jumble Sale is held to help us raise money to meet production costs for our next show Starlight Express which will be at The Halifax Playhouse from 12th-15th November.
Rehearsals for Starlight Express have started in earnest and our cast of children are developing their roller skating skills and learning some of the great songs penned by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. More information will follow soon including how to get tickets for this famous show.

It's in On Reflection Hairdressers over that weekend and consists of work from Lizzie and Louise Lockhart, Jane and Rose Revitt as well as offerings from Andy Pointon and Zachary Ingham.
The shop will sell Hebden Bridge souvenirs as well as lots of bike related things. Most items are handmade, screen printed and unique. You wont find them anywhere else!

For the monumental event of the Tour De France, we have a rare screening of Sylvain Chomet's 2003, French animated comedy, Belleville Rendezvous with a live film rescore by Animat.
Belleville Rendezvous tells the story of Madame Souza, an elderly woman who goes on a quest to rescue her grandson Champion, a Tour de France cyclist, who has been kidnapped by the French mafia for gambling purposes and taken to the city of Belleville. She is joined by the Triplets of Belleville, music hall singers from the 1930s, whom she meets in the city, and her obese hound, Bruno.
This charming, sardonic and bittersweet tale is given a magical rescore played live by Animat, blending the original sounds from the film with a range of live instrumentation and samples to create a unique live cinema experience.

Solo Exhibition by Lionel Playford
The Calder Gallery is now showing a solo exhibition by Lionel Playford. His paintings capture the beauty and drama of the moors. He has managed to create a body of work which shows the major changes witnessed during the different seasons from the colourful Spring to the more subtle colours of the Winter months.
Lionel paints the ever changing skies which set the mood for each piece with an assurance based on his daily experiences of living and drawing on the moors. The exhibition runs until 1st June.

The Biku is Hebden's very own version of the Japanese short form Haiku tradition. If you would like to write one and find out more, Peter Sansom, award winning poet in residence at three Hebden schools, will be running open poetry workshops for all ages and abilities on Saturday 14th June, 10.30am - 12pm at Riverside Junior School, and then Saturday 5th July, 4pm - 5pm at Hebden Bridge Little Theatre. All welcome. It will be free and fun!
Riverside, Stubbings and Central Street are currently enjoying poetry workshops from poet Peter Sansom, around the theme of bicycles and international poetry, and art workshops with local artist Jude Wadley. The children at the schools are creating their very own audio bike, for display at Hebden Bridge Arts Festival. Ingeniously constructed by ATC, the bike will use pedal power to play back the children reading their poems. There will also be a performance of some of the poetry at Hebden Bridge Little Theatre on Saturday 5th July 5.30pm – 6.30pm, during the Festival.
Totally Biku is funded by Arts Council, CalRec, the Bearder Trust, Rotary Club and the PTAs and Friends of Riverside, Central Street and Stubbings Junior School.

Fair For Youth will be returning on May 31st this year and promises to be bigger and better than ever, with hopes of the weather being close to the mid-twenties by the end of May! Young people of Hebden Bridge have established a series of successful events every year since 2009 generating greater interest and influence each time round.

Wadsworth Boundary Walk
The Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge is currently organising this year's Annual Boundary Walk for 1st June.
The Boundary Walk rambles through the most spectacular scenery in the Pennines including the beautiful wooded valleys of Hardcastle Crags and the commanding moors above the Luddenden Valley.

The full Boundary Walk covers some 21 miles and is classified as moderately difficult in walking terms. However, to accommodate leisure ramblers and families, the Walk is now spilt into four sections, each of which ends on a road to facilitate a checkpoint & refreshments. The final section through the stunning Hardcastle Crags is particularly suited to those not wanting to attempt the full Walk & transport options are also available to and from Widdop.
Runners are also welcome but they must start the route at 8am on the morning of 1st June
This year, for the first time, walkers and runners can register on-line, or by postal registration.

It'll be the usual heady brew of New Order, Blur, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Courteeners, The Chameleons, Nada Surf, Fountains of Wayne, David Bowie, The Smiths, Happy Mondays, The Cure, ACR - you know the score - perhaps with some new faves too, the likes of Army Navy (check them out), The Blood Arm, Ezra Furman, The Delaplains, Surfer Blood.
It all starts at 9pm and finishes at 1pm.
Admission is free.
You don't have to dance but it'd be cool if you did. The atmosphere at Nelson's is always laid-back and hassle-free so if you want to sit down peacefully in reflective, vaguely poetical mood you can do so while listening to some brilliant songs variously described as indie or alternative or new wave, take your pick.
David isn't 'appearing' at this one and is taking a rest, his place taken by Geoff Read, artist, fell runner, musician, technician.
Todmorden Open Studios Event: 'Tour de Studios'

Todmorden Artists is a new group that aims to promote and publicise the range and quality of creative activity in the town and nearby communities. The group are launching their first Open Studios Event the weekend of 11am – 5pm May 17th and 18th 2014. The event is billed as part of the Tour de France Cultural activities across the region.
Tour De Studios will incorporate a number of independent artist studios in Todmorden, Lydgate, Walsden as well as Todmorden Studios and Platform 1. The group encompasses a variety of creative visual arts, crafts and designer makers. There will be a free leaflet with a map included at the Tourist Information Centres throughout the area.
The event is free and all are welcome to enjoy this rich and diverse cultural event in the town.

Friends of the Picture House: behind the scenes decorating morning
Following on from the fabulous dressing room re-vamp undertaken by Friends of the Picture House volunteer decorators last June, we're now turning our attention to the rather tired staff area. We'll be painting the walls, ceilings and woodwork of the staff area between 9am and 1pm on Sunday 18th May, and need between 6 and 8 keen and hardworking painters.

Blackshaw Head Plant Sale and Spring Fair
The Blackshaw Head Plant Sale and Spring Fair takes place this Saturday at the chapel.
A wide range of locally-grown hardy perennial flowering plants will be on sale, as well as vegetable and tomato seedlings from local growers. And if gardening is not your 'thing', there's an exhibition of children's art, craft stalls and games, a home produce stall with yummy cakes, jams and chutneys, and delicious lunches and teas, all at Blackshaw Head Chapel from 12 to 4pm this Saturday, 10th May.
Organisers began their preparations, as usual, in March, dividing and potting up hundreds of plants from local gardens which have then been tended and nurtured to be ready for Saturday. As organiser Pat Munday says "If they'll survive and thrive in Blackshaw you know they'll romp away in your garden".
The event is in aid of the chapel building fund. "The chapel is an important resource for the community." Pat explained, "It is used by many local groups as well as for village activities, but it costs over £250 a week to keep it open. Fund-raising events like this are a way for the local community to help us to make sure that the building is maintained and improved, so that its future can be assured. And it's also a great way for people to get together, whether gardeners or not."

Bumblebee ID training session

Records of bumblebees are desperately needed for Calderdale and the surrounding areas in order to determine the impacts of climate change and disease on these attractive and highly beneficial insects.
Bumblebees provide vital pollination services to growers, gardeners and wildplants as well as being a sure sign that spring is on its way. Please come along and learn how to identify the species that are known to live in Calderdale, who knows, once you are trained up, you may discover a species new to the area! The training will be provided by an expert from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. Places are limited, so booking is essential.
The session will be held on the 7th May at 9.45 for 10am start, lunch will be at 12.30 where you will need to provide your own lunch. After Lunch there'll be a walk around the park to put your new skills to the test.
This will be the end of the training session but if anyone's interested they can join the 2pm Bee walk to Stanally stones, part of the Action for Bees in Calderdale project.
Annual Town Meeting
This year the Annual Town Meeting for Hebden Royd Town Council, the meeting for electors, will be held on 7th May 2014 at Waterfront Hall in the Town Hall, Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.
The Agenda consists of;

- Statement of Accounts of the Hebden Royd Town Council for the year ended 31st March 2014
- Any other Town Business, whether raised by an elector or otherwise.
The first four items are normally considered swiftly but Item 5 allows anything that an elector wishes to discuss and the issue can be voted on, not just by councillors but by any elector of Hebden Royd. The subject can be anything an elector wishes to raise because they feel it is important.
Examples of topic could be the provision of allotments, traffic & parking, local parks and facilities, or planning issues.
Clerk to Hebden Royd Town Council, Jason Boom said, "People will spend time writing to newspapers and websites to discuss matters which affect them, often critical of politicians and the decisions they make, but are absent when presented with a formal opportunity to highlight an issue and start the process of actually doing something. The Annual Town Meeting is an opportunity to start the process".
If you want your voice to be heard, convince others of the importance of your view, then come to the meeting and speak.
Summer concert by Hebden Bridge Junior Band
Hebden Bridge Junior Band is holding an open concert at the town hall next Thursday, May 8th between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

John works mainly with acrylics to create colourful and exciting paintings that can capture the mood and atmosphere of a place. His beautiful forest paintings have a quiet serenity whilst by contrast his seascapes capture the power and movement of the sea. He manages to create wonderful textures by using a variety of materials and by using his own distinctive techniques to apply the paint. We are thrilled to be having his work on display here again and look forward to sharing it with you.

Shaggy Dog Storytellers Stories from the Floor Night

It's last Friday of the month again, so it's Club Night once more for storytelling enthusiasts at our famous local club! As a Guardian feature recently explained, Shaggy Dog pride themselves on developing local performers.
This has been chosen as a Stories from the Floor Night, so here's your chance to shine. Part of the evening will be given over to a storytelling challenge: tell a true tale on the theme of 'Home is where the heart is'. These tales should be of no more than 7 minutes duration. Although the tales should be true they do not have to be autobiographical.
The rest of the evening will consist of stories told by local and visiting tellers. Newcomers to storytelling clubs should note that tales are told rather than read, so be sure to prepare your tale in advance and try it out before a friendly but honest audience. It is not compulsory to tell a story, but it's advisable to arrive early. Doors open at 7.30 for a prompt 8pm start.
Entrance is £7 with concessions for under 18s.

The Non-Conformists features Martin Parr's first major body of work from the mid-1970s, published here for the first time in book form.
In 1975, fresh out of art school, Martin Parr found poor footing in the London photography scene, so he moved to the picturesque Yorkshire Pennine mill town of Hebden Bridge.
Over a period of five years, he documented the town in photographs, showing in particular the aspects of traditional life that were beginning to decline. Susie Parr, whom he had met in Manchester, joined him in documenting a year in the life of a small Methodist chapel, together with its farming community.
Martin has an exhibition of his work at Bradford Media Museum and will be at the shop signing copies of his book and talking briefly about his work after talking in Bradford the same day. See HebWeb News

Know Your Blood Pressure Day

The Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge supports the Stroke Association's efforts and is offering free blood pressure test to people of all ages.
The quick and painless tests are carried out by trained medical staff from Hebden Bridge Group Practice.

The LEGO Movie
Hebden Bridge Picture House is holding its first ever Autism Friendly Screening ('AFS') on Saturday 5th April at 5.00pm, screening The LEGO Movie (U), to coincide with World Autism Awareness Day.
An AFS differs from a normal screening as we will leave the house lights on low, the sound will be turned down slightly, no adverts or trailers will be played, people are free to move around and make noise, and are welcome to 'chill out' in the foyer if they wish to leave the screening for a break. Standard ticket prices apply, and tickets are available on the door for cash: doors open at 4.15pm.

Shaggy Dog Storytellers Club Night
French Based Storyteller, Kevin Walker performs, "A Whisker of Truth" on Friday, 28th March at Stubbing Wharf (7.30pm entry for a prompt 8.00pm start). These stories aim to make you laugh, sigh, gasp and cry. Kevin develops his characters and atmosphere with a well honed technique and use of music and artefacts.
The performance is followed by the ever popular Stories from the Floor finale. This month tellers have been set a challenge: tell a true tale with the theme of "Home is where the heart is". Tales should be limited to 7 minutes duration.

River Stewardship activity on the River Calder at Mytholmroyd Sunday 30 March 2014
This second river stewardship event is part of the Big Spring Clean organised by Hebden Royd Town Council (HRTC). It will be a morning session, running from 10am until 1pm - meet on the grassed slipway access to the riverbank, opposite the Co-op petrol garage on Burnley Road in Mytholmroyd. Car parking is problematic on this busy part of the A646, so please park in the village centre and walk, or avoid bringing a vehicle if you can. Strong boots or wellingtons will be suitable footwear for the task, tools and gloves will be provided.

In October 1937, during the Spanish civil war, a massacre took place in Valdedios and the victims were buried in a mass grave.
This exhibition is a haunting record of the exhumation some sixty years later.
World War One Centenary
2014 will mark 100 years since the start of World War One and Hebden Royd Town Council is currently developing plans to build a commemoration fitting of this significant milestone in world history.
As part of the commemoration, an exhibition will be held in the Town Hall in Hebden Bridge. Whilst there are extensive archives we are eager for local residents to share any photographs that they may have or press cuttings from the time. We would also welcome recollections, letters, stories and any other information.

Sam is an atmospheric scientist working on understanding what's going on an important solar system planet (the 3rd one from the sun). This August (2013) he has been taking part in flight measurements over possible Arctic sources of methane and other greenhouse gases. The work will enable us to better understand both the present and the future effects on Earth's climate. The measurements are part of the checks on the earth's atmospheric canary before the bird stops singing forever. Related to understanding global warming.

The eighteenth century saw a transformation of the Calder Valley, taking it to the forefront of textile manufacturing in the UK. So far we have many descriptions, but no comprehensive explanations for why such a locality could become so influential. Steve has lived in the area for about 25 years and is currently a senior lecturer in history at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston.

The world's greatest cycle race - the Tour de France, starts in the world's greatest county on 5th & 6th July next year.
And for this monumental event, we have a rare screening of Sylvain Chomet's 2003, French animated comedy, Belleville Rendezvous with a live film rescore by Animat.
Belleville Rendezvous tells the story of Madame Souza, an elderly woman who goes on a quest to rescue her grandson Champion, a Tour de France cyclist, who has been kidnapped by the French mafia for gambling purposes and taken to the city of Belleville. She is joined by the Triplets of Belleville, music hall singers from the 1930s, whom she meets in the city, and her obese hound, Bruno.
This charming, sardonic and bittersweet tale is given a magical rescore played live by Animat, blending the original sounds from the film with a range of live instrumentation and samples to create a unique live cinema experience.
There will be an after film party at the trades with music provided by the Gezellig residents.

Calderdale People's Assembly, a coalition of organisations and individuals involved in fighting this Government's austerity measures, is meeting on Monday 17th February at 7pm in the Last Drop Inn, Bull Green, Halifax.
Meetings have previously been held in Hebden Bridge, but the Calderdale People's Assembly is looking to involve more people and anti-cuts groups from the Halifax and outlying areas. The meeting is open to anyone.
The People's Assembly launched in June 2013 as a broad front and alliance of groups and individuals who oppose the Government's attacks on working people in the name of so-called 'austerity' measures. There are now groups operating all over the country, bringing together people involved in organisations such as trade unions and in campaign groups such as the Anti-Bedroom Tax.
The main purpose of the Halifax meeting is to deal with resolutions and delegates to the recall People's Assembly in London on 15th March and to plan future action in the region.

Air Quality meeting
Special meeting of the Sustainable Transport Group on Tuesday, 18th February at 7pm in the Greenwood Room at the Town Hall in Hebden Bridge.
Sally Jones is West Yorkshire Low Emission Strategy Manager for Air Quality at Bradford City Council. It is hoped that a member of the Air Quality Team from Calderdale MBC will also be able to come.
Sally will give a presentation looking on the work being carried in the region out as part of the Low Emissions Strategy. The presentation will comprise a brief overview of the current work being undertaken and will then focus on the A646 corridor and the influences on air quality like stock, bus operators, HGVs, infrastructure etc.
Finally, the focus will be on what we, in Hebden Bridge with our polluted main road from Machpelah to Bridge Lanes and in Luddenden Foot with a substantial section of Burnley Road both of which have already been identified as areas requiring Air Quality Management, can do.
The problems of air quality and pollution are not going to go away: they affect Hebden Bridge now and its future. It affects all those who use and live near the A646.

National Storytelling Week Celebration
The Book Case hosts Shaggy Dog Storytellers in Tales from the Wharf, a celebration of stories old and new on Thursday, 6th February.
The line up should include Rod Dimbleby, Ursula Holden Gill, Christine McMahon, George Murphy, Vicky Orton and Sean O'Shah, to represent some of the exciting talent that has developed in the recent history of our local club.
Tickets are £5 from the shop and doors open at 7pm. Come along for the tales, the crack, a free glass of wine and a browse through the shelves of this local independent and vibrant bookshop.
Trades Club's Monthly Quiz

The monthly quiz at the Trades Club on Thursday will feature music, things in the news and others rounds selected by the quiz goers themselves. All good fun. For your £5 you get the quiz and excellent curry. Surplus proceeds go to the Hebden Bridge Labour Party this month.

The history of Mars Exploration & the Indian Mars Mission
Gurbir (a UK astronomy podcaster on the internet) will tell us about the history of Mars exploration with space probes. India will be launching a space probe to Mars in the November 2013, minimum energy 'window' that opens up for such launches from Earth. He will be able to update us on that too. India will be the sixth country to launch a mission to Mars after the U.S., Russia, Europe, Japan and China. India has previously had a successful mission of a probe to the moon.

Calder Ward Forum
The next Calder Ward Forum will be on Tuesday 28th January starting at 6:45pm in the Waterfront Hall, Hebden Bridge Town Hall, Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge.
On the agenda will be further updates about the Tour de France from Tourism Officer Katie Kinsella and the Hebden Bridger Bus services with representatives from both Metro & TLC Travel Ltd.
