with Dances of Universal Peace

From 7pm, the doors will be open for a celebration of the return of the light.

At 7:30pm the dancing with peace dances accompanied by guitar, drum and viola will begin, including a little winter-solstice ritual. The evening will be led by Jilani, Vitalija, Robert & Ralph and will finish with socialising over some nibbles and drinks people are asked to bring and share.

All proceeds will go to Hope Baptist Chapel towards repairing their roof damage.

Eggsmas at the Egg Factory!

Made in the Valley are hosting their 3rd Meet the Makers Market this Christmas at the Egg Factory. This year it's running over 2 days to fit in even more local makers and businesses and there'll be plenty for all ages to do. You could create something at the Making Station, dress up and take a selfie, indulge in mulled wine and cake, or hot soup from Incredible Farm's cauldron. And for the first time there'll be live music from Catfish Skillet, the Pennine Appalachian String Band.

It will be an "egg-cellent" place to buy your Christmas presents, from organic cheese to prints, lighting to jewellery, cushions to paper goods, ceramics to paintings and textiles, there will be something for everyone. And it's all very local, something which is very important to Made in the Valley, the local co-operative of makers who run the creative coworking space housed in the old Egg Factory on Victoria Rd.

Hebden Bridge Championship Brass Band Concert

Hebden Bridge Championship Brass Band are in concert on Sunday 13 December at the Good Shepherd Church, Mytholmroyd, at 7.30pm.

Annual Service of Remembrance

Valley Funeral Service and Robertshaw Greenwood Funeral Directors are holding their Annual Service of Remembrance at Hebden Bridge Town Hall on Monday 14th December 2015 at 7.00pm.

This year the service will be of open faith and led by Celebrant Zetta Bear with contributions from Reverend Howard Pask, Reverend Cathy Reardon and Celebrants Chris Berry and Sheila Dent.

There will be readings, carols and you will be invited to light a candle during the service in remembrance of your loved ones. There will be refreshments served afterwards.

The Upper Calder Valley recorded on film for future generations - by After Alice members. The After Alice Project is taking the 'old photos' of the future and shooting them on film which will may well outlast digital by generations or centuries.

Winner of Best Small Band at the Buxton Festival, Holly Marland plays traditional African songs,original songs and inventive reworkings of pop songs accompanying herself on a beautiful West African harp called the kora.

Multi-instrumentalist Becca Ryan sings a mixture of original, jazz and pop songs whilst playing bass and guitar. They throw it all into the pot for a gumbo of delicious sounds.

BBC and Leach Pottery partner with Northlight Winter Art Fair

This year Northlight is joining forces with The Crafts Council and BBC Get Creative to present Hey Clay! a national celebration of clay, giving everyone the chance to unleash their inner potter. Northlight Art Studios will become an official Hey Clay venue on 4th, 5th and 6th of December so, if you have been inspired by the BBC's 'Great British Pottery Throw Down', come along and join in and help us link up with The Leach pottery in St Ives by making a waving figure in clay and another clay figure in St Ives may well wave back to you!

On Friday 4th December 10.00am – 12.00pm we will be having a free drop in session to start our waving people installation that will continue over the Winter Art Fair weekend. Critical Paris climate change talks

Calderdale Friends of the Earth are organising a 'Climate Drop-in at the Minster' during the critical Paris climate change negotiations, on Saturday 5th December 10-2pm in Halifax Minister.

It's intended as an informal opportunity to find out more about what's happening, show a commitment to taking action, and to collect support for our 2016 next campaign on fossil fuel divestment. Speakers so far including Holly Lynch MP for Halifax and ex-MP John Battle.

But in the run-up to the Paris conference, during the event and afterwards we'll be posting information every day here about climate change and energy issues so you can know exactly what's going on: will there actually be an agreement this time (after the failure to get this in Copenhagen 2009)? Will it be strong enough? Who are the climate 'heroes' and 'villains'? What has our government been doing to help get an agreement?

And if people want to have a discussion on Hebweb we'll be happy to take part.

The Mayor of Hebden Royd, along with the Calder Ward Labour Party, will be holding a Quiz and Curry Evening at Hebden Bridge Trades Club on Thursday, 3rd December from 8.30pm.

Tickets cost £5 each which include quiz entry and a delicious curry supper. There will be raffle tickets on sale during the evening for a chance to win some wonderful prizes. All takings from the evening will go towards the Mayor of Hebden Royd Town Council, Cllr James Fearon's chosen charity 'St Augustine's Centre'.

St. Augustine's Centre, based on Hanson Lane in Halifax, is a community centre for anyone who needs help, advice or support. Based on the Christian faith which respects and values individuals, the Centre welcomes the vulnerable and cares for all, regardless of faith, ethnicity, background or any other factors. For over 40 years they have offered a warm and welcoming environment for people to access support and advice from friendly workers and volunteers. They aim to help with basic needs and hope to build confidence to encourage participation within the community and to prevent isolation.

5 Hours of Boxing Fitness Fundraiser

We need your support to raise funds for our female boxers' development programme at Hebden Bridge Boxing Club.

We're opening up the gym doors from 9-2pm on Sat 28th November for a five hour fundraiser comprising half hour taster sessions plus mothers v daughters Boxercise and a Jane Fonda workout thrown in for fun.

It's an opportunity to come and see the gym, try out a class and meet our boxers and the women who train with us.

To be guaranteed a place you must book and turn up at least 10 mins before the start of the session. Otherwise, try your luck on the day, there will be spaces in at least some of the sessions.

Widdop and the Shackletons

It all started when the Yorkshire Water Board ranger told me that many people visited Widdop and asked him ''Who lived here? Was there a village? What did they do stuck up here in the middle of no-where?'' I discovered  that my Shackleton family came from Widdop and that they had lived at the farm where there were still two barns left standing--now one. Now after years of trawling through many documents the full picture is emerging.

About the speaker

John Shackleton was born in Nantwich, Cheshire, now living in Crewe. He is a former primary school teacher, now retired for 8 years and has been interested in all things historical since as a child he used to ask- ''What DID you do grandad?'' His researches led to him establishing web-site on Widdop three years ago, which to his surprise, has now attracted 17,000 + hits!

Speake and Lowe perform: Tolkien was our Neighbour!

Well he was born a few miles away from Birmingham's own Malcolm Speake and Chris Lowe.

Often regarded as Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid lookalikes, these twin darlings of storytelling clubs, folk festivals and WI knees ups have both won Biggest Liar competitions.

As well as tall tales they will entertain with spooky stories and accomplished balladry on Friday, 27th November at The Stubbing Wharf pub.

Alison West, the director of the Hepton Singers said, 'In November 2012 the Hepton Singers performed a concert entirely of Russian music. For our St Cecilia concert this year we are re-visiting some of the gems from that concert, in particular a group of four pieces by the contemporary Ukrainian composer Galina Grigorjeva from her exquisitely beautiful composition 'On Leaving'.

"Although this music is recent, the influence of the music of the Russian Orthodox church, and of earlier composers such as Rachmaninov, shines through her work, and some of her harmonies are spine-tingling. We shall accompany these pieces with works by Sergei Rachmaninov, Alfred Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, Josef Rheinberger; and an old favourite of ours, Three Graduals by Anton Bruckner.

'The result is a heady mix to warm the toes and heart in the darkness of November.'

Winter Beer Festival

The Fox & Goose Winter Beer Festival will run from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd November 2015. The festival starts at midday and runs through to midnight each day and the Fox & Goose is located at 7 Heptonstall Road.

There will be a selection of over 20 real ales, as well as ciders, wines and soft drinks. Bar snacks will be available on the days of the festival and we'll be running a token system for payment.

The theme for this festival will be "Old Friends and New", we're planning to include some beers for breweries we've liked for many years as well as a few from some newer breweries that we've only just stumbled across.

The Lost Chord Ensemble

7:30 pm in The Little Theatre, Hebden Bridge.

Christopher Irvin, who conducts the local Little Theatre Choir and also the White Rose Orchestra in Leeds, has a wealth of light music including some of his own compositions. He is inviting musicians (with their music stand) to come and play some light music selections. We will also be providing music before and after the Annual Service of Remembrance at the Town Hall on 14th December.

Mytholmroyd Christmas Market and Lights Switch-On

Royd Regeneration invite you to attend their ever-popular Christmas Market which is taking place on Saturday 21 November (12 noon-5.30pm) in St Michael's Church Hall and square, Mytholmroyd - lights switch-on at 4.30pm (thank you to Hebden Royd Town Council).

There are many new stalls this year both inside and out (which are all booked up), and we hope you enjoy the free mulled wine, free mince pies and free face painting.

Close-up magician/ balloon man Paul Dawson will be there to entertain and Santa will be joining in the festivities mid-afternoon.

There's hot food in the square, children's rides (sadly not free) and Hebden Bridge Championship Brass Band will be playing during the afternoon.

At 4pm they will accompany Burnley Road Academy Choir and the lights will be switched on at 4.30pm. We hope you have a great time!

Calderdale CAMRA Beer & Cider Festival

In celebration of their 40th birthday,the Halifax & Calderdale branch of CAMRA - the Campaign for Real Ale - are proud to announce their first ever beer & cider festival in Hebden Bridge Town Hall.

From Thursday 12th to Saturday 14th November, customers will be able to sample at least fifty different cask-conditioned ales from all over the UK and a selection of traditional ciders and perries in the Waterfront Hall. Opening hours are:

Thursday: 2 pm - 10 pm
Friday: 12 noon - 11 pm
Saturday: 12 noon - 10 pm

Admission: £2 (£3 after 6 pm on Friday)
Card-carrying CAMRA members: £1

Harp and a Monkey

On Saturday 14th November the acclaimed folk trio "Harp and a Monkey" will be playing at Wadsworth Community Centre and bringing to a close a season which has hosted sell out gigs from Phil Beer, Martyn Joseph and recently O'Hooley & Tidow.

The folk storytelling of Martin Purdy (vocals, glockenspiel, accordion, harmonica and keyboards), Simon Jones (harp, guitar, viola) and Andy Smith (banjo, melodica, guitar and programming) is imbued with a deep Lancashire sensibility that shines through in their beautifully crafted vignettes of northern life, love and remembrance.

Renowned for their modern twist on traditional storytelling, Harp and a Monkey will take on some unusual themes during a two-set performance, including songs from their first two albums and new World War One material. Formed in 2008, they are regulars on the national festival circuit.

Harp and a Monkey have enjoyed national radio support from the likes of Steve Lamacq, Mike Harding and Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2, FolkRadioUk and many more, and the Lancastrian's most recent album, 'All Life Is Here', saw them described by the influential fRoots magazine as "Undoubtedly one of the most vital and charismatic things happening in English folk music right now"

Calder Valley Cocktails cast member, Susan Quick will lead a workshop in the Forum Theatre method, devised by Theatre of the Oppressed innovator Augusto Boal.

Audience members become spect-actors, replacing the lead character to show how they would combat his/her oppression.

Since 1993 Susan has trained regularly with Boal, who she invited twice to Hebden Bridge to work with her company, Enabling Theatre.

Ted Hughes and Gallipoli

Nick Wilding

Nick researched Ted Hughes unpublished material in the British Library in order to prepare this talk on the experience of the poet laureate's father William Hughes in Gallipoli. It had a traumatic impact on his father and was the inspiration for various of Ted's poems. Nick discovered Ted's father's letters to the Hebden Bridge Times about what he was going through and reveals the historical context of the poems and what William had witnessed to become so traumatised.     

About the speaker

Former BBC producer Nick founded Excalibur Productions in 1986 and became the first independent film company to produce a regional programme for the BBC. They have also produced television commercials, documentaries and campaign and training videos, which have featured locations throughout the UK, Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Middle East.

His local history documentaries continue to bring the past to life.

Join us this Halloween for a very special screening of the Vincent Price film 'The Last Man on Earth' with live film score by ANIMAT.

In the year 1968, every day is the same for Dr. Robert Morgan: he wakes up, gathers his weapons, and then goes hunting for vampires. Morgan lives in a world where everyone else has been infected by a plague that has turned them into undead, vampiric creatures that cannot stand sunlight, fear mirrors, and are repelled by garlic. They would kill Morgan if they could, but fortunately, they are weak and unintelligent. At night, Morgan locks himself inside his house; during the day, he kills as many vampires as he can, burning the bodies.

The Last Man on Earth is a little known B movie made in Italy and is the first screen version of Richard Mathieson's novel, later remade as The Omega Man with Charlton Heston and I Am Legend starring Will Smith. The film is a major influence on George A Romero and it is the first film to portray the now familiar grey skinned, slow moving "zombie" seen in countless examples of the genre.

Animats re-score will incorporate specially written music, dialogue, effects and remixed themes from the original score and carefully chosen tracks from Animat's eclectic DJ archive.

Following the film we will be heading deep into unchartered dance floor 'terror-tory' with our 'Nightmare on Holme Street' after party with local selector CP (Inkfolk / What the Freak) and the Gezellig residents.

Hebden Bridge Picture House - Halloween Film Festival (18)

Join us this Halloween as we screen five feral films as part of a day long film festival to celebrate the launch of our new monthly screenings, Surreal Reels. Hosted by director and actor Dominic Brunt, and with music from Was Ist Das? Soundsystem, the fearsome feast of horror classics are sure to thrill, chill and excite!

Tickets £13 for as many of the 5 films as you would like (cinema prices not applicable) available in advance here or in person during box office hours. Re-entry on the day will be possible via wristbands, given at point of first entry. Entry will be for 18s and over only, due to the BBFC certificates of the films being screened.

Open Art Exhibition at Todmorden Town Hall

Todmorden Town Hall again hosts, Todmorden Art Group's annual Open Art Exhibition, on Sat 31st Oct & Sun 1st Nov 2015 (from 10am - 4pm).

A wide range of artists, some local and some from further afield, will be displaying their work; including mixed media paintings, photography, 3D exhibits, hand made jewellery, textile art and a variety of craftwork, greetings cards and gifts.... There is also a dedicated section for exhibits by young artists from the local primary schools.

Barbara Atack and Keith Stansfield

Join Keith and Barbara for a tumble through the ages by way of the family names of West Yorkshire, especially those specific to the Upper Calder Valley; from Aykroyd to Widdop via the omnipresent Greenwoods and the sadly extinct Fixbys. Keith will provide examples of local nicknames/placenames remembered from his youth along with a few illustrations of the way dialect words were used in everyday conversation.

About the speakers

Keith Stansfield and Barbara Atack are two local family historians who founded the Family History group in 2008 and have been helping members and visitors to unravel their families history regularly since then. They encounter a wide, and sometimes intriguing, variety of surnames as part of their work.

1. A worthless piece of cloth, esp. one that is torn or worn.

2. Rags; ragged or tattered clothing, but, as regular visitors to our popular Rag Markets will confirm, products at our market is far from that! It is a treasure trove of textiles, a faberdashery of inspiration and crafty customers have flocked to enjoy the bargains!

Our Rag Market has to be the perfect place to source not only a bargain, but original and quality crafting, dress making and tailoring materials buttons, ribbons, yarn, vintage pieces, patterns, books and anything else you could possibly need to inspire your creativity!

Many of the fabrics are vintage, one offs and from private collections so you can pick up many items that are not available in the shops for amazing prices. Our stall holders are generally crafters themselves, reluctantly selling items from a treasured hoard that has become too large to store but some of our regular stallholders also include local small businesses selling beautiful (Yorkshire!) woven wool tweeds and plaid fabrics and a ceramicist selling unique and unusual hand crafted ceramic buttons.

History tells us that Elmet was a small British Kingdom which was annexed by the Saxons in the early 600s. The rest is shrouded in mystery. However there are hints and glimpses of evidence here and there. Gather them all together and it's possible to shine some illumination to the Celtic Twilight.

About the speaker

Dave Weldrake has lived and worked in West Yorkshire for most of his life. He was formerly with the West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service for nearly twenty years and now works as an archaeologist and freelance heritage educator. His principal role is providing a range of archaeological talks and presentations to both schools and adult groups.

Exhibition: Queen of Good Sitting

"Mary's work draws upon the archetypes and mythic imagery that she finds in everyday life. Her large expressive paintings explore the dark stories of childhood and their implications upon society. The vulnerability of a child or of an old person becomes a metaphor for the vulnerability of society." (quote from Carole Kirk writing about Mary).

Mary's large paintings involves the viewer in everyday images of children, observed local people, older people or situations but often have an intriguing unsettling slant, that all things are not quite right. Many of the painting involve her family as models and inspiration to create effecting images. They are beautifully and expressively painted and show an unrecognised talent.

Mary is popular and well known locally, running painting courses for Northlight Art Studios and before this responsible for creating the successful Access to Art and  BA Art Course at Todmorden College. She even has an MBE to her name although would never tell anybody about this and remains very humble about her exceptional contribution to Art education and wonderful talent for painting.

This is an exhibition not to be missed especially with its intriguing title.

On October 11th representatives of the town council of Paratico (Brescia, Italy) will be in Hebden Bridge to discuss the development of friendship links between the two towns.

They are particularly interested in encouraging contacts between youth groups, especially as regards sporting and cultural exchanges. The Hebden Bridge Twinning Society (HBTS) is already speaking to a number of youth groups in Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd about joining the meeting.

The Budget Consultation is your chance to have your say on how the Council spends its budget. Calderdale Council wants you to tell them what you think of their vision and priorities for the future. Book Launch: Guide to Civil Resistance Vol 2, A Bibliography Of Social Movements and Nonviolent Action

The University of Bradford Peace Studies is pleased to announce the public launch of this new book A Guide to Civil Resistance Vol 2, A Bibliography Of Social Movements and Nonviolent Action, by April Carter, Howard Clark and Michael Randle. It is published by Merlin Press in Association with the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University.

The Launch takes place on Thursday 8 October in the Common Room, Pemberton Building, University of Bradford, Richmond Road, from 17.15 to 19.30. 

The speakers will be Professor Paul Rogers who will give a welcome address, April Carter and Michael Randle, and Professor Caroline Hughes, Professor of Conflict Resolution, and Academic Director Bradford Rotary Centre for International Studies who will chair the meeting.

For two years running our group have been creating home-made theatre in the Calder Valley. We have been asked to perform our recent show Calder Valley Cocktails for the Mytholmroyd Arts Festival on 23rd October. Heart Gallery in Hebden Bridge has managed to bring two amazing artists together in one inviting space to showcase new work never before seen in West Yorkshire!

Angela Smyth works in an old mill building in Sowerby Bridge creating illustrative paintings that are inspired by her home town and the people she meets. Angela is a painter of fun, life-affirming and poignant images. She is a lover of people & animals, a watcher from cafe windows, an interpreter of the every day, a fan of the gentle smile and the knowing wink and an imaginer of things that aren't usually there, but quite possibly could be! Angela's 10ft map of The South Pennines took 6 months to complete but now adorns the exterior of the Hebden Bridge Visitor and Canal Centre.

Kirsty Elson lives in the beautiful and inspiring County of Cornwall and loves searching for driftwood and other found objects to turn into one-off sculptures. Beachcombing and treasure hunting with her family is one of Kirsty's favourite and simplest of pleasures. Once back in her studio she allows the materials she finds to guide her and suggest what the final piece will be. Kirsty's signature pieces include rows of driftwood cottages, lighthouses and ships.

Both Angela and Kirsty will always say 'I hope my work makes you smile' and actually it really does!

Artsmill exhibition: Repetition and Permutation

Roger Lee's work is subtle and delicate providing a calming, clean and thought provoking atmosphere. Standing in front of a large canvas the faint changes in the surface colours and the considered grid marks makes intriguing viewing. We are so used to viewing 'subjects' whereas this provides an alternative to considering art. 

In talking to Roger the following was his comment: "My work is very simple, a contemplation in form, consisting of the repetition and the subsequent permutation of marks and the combination of marks.

"The resulting images contain no narrative, as a viewer you do not see any subject but are invited simply to experience them. I am very grateful to Artsmill in Hebden Bridge for giving me this, my first solo exhibition since gaining a degree in visual art in 2010."

Packhorse Trails walk

A 6 mile medium to hard walk ending at Gibson Mill and which will explore the heritage of the ancient paths which were used to transport anything and everything from salt to lime and cloth: they were constructed to be used by Galloway horses which are now extinct.

Info about the meeting is not yet on either Greater Huddersfield or Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group website, but at the most recent Greater Huddersfield CCG Governing Body meeting, they said in reply to a question from a member of the public that both CCGs will meet in parallel to make the decision. They said this does not mean a joint meeting but they will both be in the same room and having joint discussions about them but deciding separately.

The meeting is open to the public. Papers for the meeting should be uploaded to the CCGs' websites 7 days before the meeting. If they're not, people can email Judith.Salter@calderdaleccg.nhs.uk and ask for them

Meet Jill Liddington at 11 am at Hebden Bridge Station for a 4.5 mile walk in the footsteps of Lavena Saltonstall, Calderdale's best known suffragette. The route skirts the Hebden hillsides, visiting homes of local campaigners and the fustian clothing factories where they worked. It ends in the town square where Emmeline Pankhurst addressed a tumultuous crowd on Votes for Women in January 1907. Easy-moderate level walk.

The next meeting of the Calder Ward Forum will on Tuesday 15th September (please note change of date) at Hebden Bridge Town Hall (Waterfront Hall), St. George's Street, HX7 7BY (please use the St. George's Street Entrance). The meeting will begin at 6.45pm with a chance for a chat from 6.15pm.

There will be presentations on CMBC Budget Consultation (It's Your Council, Your Voice), Community Alcohol Partnership / Calder Holmes Park, a report on Care Closer to Home as well as Police update and an Open forum section for you to discuss matters that concern you with your ward Councillors and Council officers.

Walk & Ride Festival: The Montane Spine Race with Q&A (12A)

As part of the Walk & Ride Festival the Hebden Bridge Picture House is screening The Montane Spine Race Film, a documentary on "Britain's most brutal race", which covers the 268 miles of The Pennine Way, and is held each year in January. The film follows the competitors as they battle through extreme winds, snowstorms and torrential rain as they race along the Spine of England.

The film will be introduced by film maker Matt Green and Ellie West followed by an audience Q&A session.

Heritage Open Days: Trains Tea and Tourism

NT Event (FOC) As part of Heritage Open Days, the National Trust at Gibson Mill, Hardcastle Crags will be hosting an exhibition in partnership with Pennine Horizons.

The archive will be on display from 11-4pm on 10 September and 12-13 September where there will be an opportunity to meet some of the staff and share experiences from a bygone age when the mill and the valley was used for entertainment rather than as a working mill.

There will also be a short trail to see where the original buildings were located and learn all about them in situ.

The opening of the Manchester - Leeds railway in 1840 allowed people to travel to Hebden Bridge in huge numbers, creating the opportunity for local entrepreneurs to sell refreshments and provide visitors with opportunities to dance, go roller skating and go boating at Gibson Mill in Hardcastle Crags.

The Storyteller And The Fairytale.

Of all the tales in the vast ocean of stories, the fairytale offers the richest rewards for contemporary audiences, and the largest challenge for storytellers. There is a quarry of information about the psychological and social value of these special tales.

However, little is discussed about the way in which a fairytale comes to life in the mind/ imagination/ heart of the engaged listener. Laura will offer tools, practices and insights about the way to prepare a fairytale for live performance; distinguishing the unique role of the storyteller.

The telling of a story is a dynamic and reciprocal event. More akin to the unfolding process of being on a journey than a theatrical presentation or a recitation of text. A fairytale has meaning in performance. It is deeply personal and indirect. The special magic of image felt and visualised in the moment is enriched by a practice of voice, speech and realisation of the nature of symbol; and the structure of the event itself enhanced by the attunement and presence of the attentive storyteller.

Be prepared to work together on a single story told by Laura. Be sure to bring a journal and file so that she can work with you to create a step by step exploration and harvest individual storytelling styles for each participant. £35 (with £25 concessions).

After a good break The Friends of Calder Holmes Park are set to meet on Tuesday 1st of September at Park Life Cafe at 7pm. If you value your park and free public spaces now is the time to get involved. We are now beginning to see the effects of council cutbacks on our park so to all those who want a park that is welcoming and well looked after, to all those who think having a free space in which to socialise and feel part of the community is important come down and see if you think you can contribute in any way.

There is lots of room for innovation and creativity within this space and the time is now.

The Friends of Calder Holmes Park are a small but diverse group of committed individuals who have big plans for the park. We are few in number though, and would like to take this opportunity to ask more members to come forward. On Friday 28th August, Master Storyteller, Clive Hopwood returns to Stubbing Wharf, home of the Shaggy Dog Storytellers, with a sparkling and varied collection of gem like tales.

Amongst his many pioneering projects, Simon developed the brilliant Storybook Dad/Mum project by supporting imprisoned parents in prisons across the country.

He was the subject of the Radio 4 documentary, 'The Goodnight Tales' and winner of the Lord Longford Prize in 2004 and the British Awards for Storytelling Excellence Community Project 2012.

This evening he returns as an oral storyteller, but this author of more than 100 books, mostly for children, with more than 20 performed plays to his credit, may - as the title suggests - weave some fascinating personal recollections into his performance. £7. Doors open at 7.30 for 8pm start.

Resisting apartheid in Palestine

The presentation will focus on the work of the activists of Ta'ayush, the Arab-Jewish partnership, which challenges Israel's discriminatory policies in the West Bank. Ta'ayush is a small but determined group of Jewish Israelis who work with rural Palestinian communities whose very existence is under threat.

Ron told the HebWeb, "I have been fortunate enough to have spent a good deal of time with the group and have seen at close quarters how the system operates.

"As one of the leading activists told me, 'The experience of Ta'ayush and the Palestinian communities we work alongside shows there is clear evidence that settlement building, land seizure, house demolitions, denial of access to lands and eviction of the Palestinian population are all connected and part of a policy, not just of the extremist settlers, but of the Israeli government and the occupying mechanism.'

My presentation includes photos and video clips of army and settler violence as well as background information on how Israel's occupation of Palestine is sustained. Little of this appears in our media and I feel it is important that more people get to know what is really happening there."

Feargal grew up under the feet of the characters visiting his parents' shop and was transfixed by their tales from the glens and the stories they told about each other in a time when no one was in a hurry. Creative Scene comes to Calderdale for this special summer's evening of artists talks.

Creative Scene is the Arts Council England's 'Creative People and Places' project in West Yorkshire. We are working with a cluster of towns and a huge range of artists and people to make art a part of every day life in North Kirklees. Our SceneMakers - enthusiastic advocates and ideas people , who shape and commission projects - will be joining artist Anthony Schrag as he walks through Calderdale, to find out more about his participatory practice.

Anthony is spending the next three months walking to Venice, and in the process questioning the value of the Venice Biennale. 'The Lure of the Lost' will see Anthony walking for 2,500km and 450 hours, collecting small relics which he will leave at the "sacred site" of the festival.

'The town is the venue' is the motto for Deveron Arts, an arts organisation based in Huntly, a seemingly ordinary market town in the north east of Scotland - where the contemporary pilgrimage will begin. We'll be joined by collaborator Claudia Zeiske, Director of Deveron Arts, who works with the history, context and identity of the town to run an ongoing programme of truly remarkable public art in some unusual and ordinary places. Every artist who works with Deveron must also contribute a piece of work to the Town Collection – a permanent and growing exhibition housed by the shops, hotels, cafes and garages of Huntly. Claudia will share some of the stories and successes of their anchor project The Town is the Venue.

A Hayward Touring exhibition from Southbank Centre, London

Hayward Touring's latest print exhibition features two collections of works by one of the most influential artists of recent decades, Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010).

Best known for her powerful emotionally charged sculptures - enclosed 'cell' or cage-like installations and fabric figures - she was also a prolific printmaker and draughtswoman. Most of the French-American artist's work dealt with strongly autobiographical themes, invoking her childhood emotions of loneliness, desire, anxiety and jealousy.

Autobiographical Series (1994) consists of 14 etchings illustrating some of her deepest thoughts and memories whilst the 11 Drypoints (all from 1999) brings her obsessions into more vivid focus. Recurrent themes, such as a woman giving birth, a cat, ladders, long hair, feet, clocks, scissors, bathtubs and a pregnant mosquito all contain references to her emotional biography. An apt example of this is the memory of her mother sewing – her family ran a workshop restoring tapestries in Paris – evoked in 'Sewing', in the Autobiographical Series.

I have been going out in public since May with a child's cot. It is an art piece based on carrying your traumatic memories with you and how hard it is to get into places that you want to be with so much baggage.

Calder Ward Forum

The next Calder Ward Forum will take place on Tuesday 30th June 2015 at Hope Baptist Church, Hebden Bridge (Please use the Hope Street Entrance), 6.30pm arrival for 6.45pm start.

There will be a presentation on Upland Management, consultations on Community Banner Policy, Neighbourhood Planning and Ward Forum Grants as well as Police update and an Open forum section for you to discuss matters that concern you with your your ward Councillors and Council officers.

For those unable to attend, there is also an online e-forum running on the night from 7pm on to allow you to raise issues at the meeting.

Melded from stories drawn from Italo Calvino's Italian Folk Tales, four boys go into a wood, but not all of them come out again. This show cunningly combines love, unsuccessful love, and run for the hills, they're a psycho love.

Not all the tales have happy endings: poison, pistols, prison and skulls will feature. There are 5 narrators, two of them dead. Not every hero gets his just desserts. Organised by Blackshaw Environmental Action Team

This public meeting will take place at Blackshaw Head Methodist Church, starting at 7.30pm. We have two speakers:

1. "The Birds and the Bees" – Hugh Firman, Conservation Officer for Calderdale Council, will give an illustrated talk, explaining why grasslands are so important for a range of species and what can be done to conserve and restore them.

2. Beth Morgan from Rooting and Fruiting, will be speaking on 'What is radical mycology?' Her talk will cover what she does, integrated food-fungi gardening, mycore mediation and benefits to our local community with questions and answers. It will tie in nicely with her report released for the Winston Churchill Trust.

Camera Club 2015 Exhibition

Kate Lycett at Heart Gallery

A Solo Exhibition with local artist Kate Lycett at Heart Gallery.

Kate walks and runs between the river and the canal and is often struck by the contrast of the power of one, and the stillness of the other. The water mirrors the changing colours; the colours change with the light.

There is nowhere quite like Yorkshire for that fast changing light that leaves you in the gloom one moment and in luminous, saturated colour the next.

In the vastness of the landscape you can see the patches of light heading towards you across the hills, or the shadows coming ready to drain everywhere of colour.

Kate couldn't live anywhere where the sun shone all the time. The brilliance of those technicolour moments takes her breath away.

Water and Light runs until 21st June 2015.

Midgley's popular biennial village fete is set to go ahead on Midgley Rec on Saturday 13 June, starting at 1.00pm.  

There will be lots of traditional family fun and entertainment including brass band, children's races, bar and tea tent, fell race, tug of war, straw race, stalls and games, food, terrier races and live music into the evening.

Hebden Bridge Camera Club Annual Exhibition of Photography

The exhibition will be held at Hebden Bridge Town Hall, Hebden Bridge, from 13 June to 24 June 2015, inclusive.

The images can be viewed at any time that the venue is open but the exhibition will be staffed by club stewards between 10am and 4pm daily.

The exhibition is held to showcase the work of members and to encourage new people to join the club. Admission is free and all are welcome. We ask visitors to vote for their favourite images and anyone doing so will be given a money-off voucher for use in the Town Hall Café.

Sunday Open Mic @ 3 Wise Monkeys

The Three Wise Monkeys, based on Water St in Todmorden, are relaunching their Open Mic night, now on a Sunday evening. A great way to round off your weekend in a relaxed atmosphere, with appreciative like minded people, a great selection of world beers and some fantastic Thai food.

Open Mic will run from 7pm every Sunday starting on 14th June. It's a great way to showcase your talents, or just show your appreciation of music. There's generally a wide range of skills and musical tastes, and it's open to all. All acts get a complimentary drink too.

Fair For Youth

Happening on Saturday, 30th May at Calder Holmes Park, Fair For Youth is an event for young people to explore different activities and opportunities which they might not be aware of or are unavailable to them.

On the day, there will be a stage (playing live music throughout the day), different workshop tents including arts and crafts and circus skills, a market area and information stalls on higher education, employability, and drug and alcohol awareness.

The aim of this event is to change the negative stigma associated with the young people in Calder valley by showing that they are an active part of society with strong yet positive talents, interests and ideas but do not have a platform to express them.

Fair For Youth is a fun day out for the whole family, with activities being aimed both at young adults, teenagers and children.

Runners are welcome to join in and run the course but we do ask them to check in and start their run as early as possible (registration opens at 8.00am). This year, to accommodate leisure ramblers and families, we are offering two options for walkers to choose from; the full 21 mile walk, with check points at 9 miles and 16 miles, or a short, family friendly, 4 and a half mile walk through the beautiful wooded valley of Hardcastle Craggs.

The Full Walk, of approximately 21 miles, is as near the Wadsworth Parish Boundary as existing footpaths permit and is in an area of outstanding natural beauty. You can terminate your walk at each checkpoint and transport back into Hebden Bridge will be available, free of charge.

Details of the 2 options, with drinks available at each checkpoints, are: Full Walk (includes a packed lunch) 1: Start at Mythlomroyd then up on to Midgley Moor, Luddenden Dean, Limers Gate to Keighley Road, Lumb Falls, Walshaw Dean reservoirs, Widdop, Hardcastle Crags and back to Hebden Bridge, and a walk along the canal bank back to Mytholmroyd.

The Short Walk, (without packed lunch) A fabulous 7 mile family walk. Transport is provided from Mythlomroyd to Widdop and walk down the beautiful Hardcastle Crags wooded valley to Mytholmroyd, via Hebden Bridge. There are reduced rates for the short walk, as shown below, but no packed lunch is provided.

Under exceptional circumstances, such as bad weather or restrictions imposed by landowners or DEFRA, the route may be changed at short notice.

Dying Matters; let's talk about it!

Hebden Bridge Town Hall, 10am - 4pm

This event will take the form of a mini festival which aims to dispel the myths around death and dying and encourage open talking and future planning with a view to living life to the full!

As the late, great Terry Pratchett said; 'It's time we learned to be as good at dying as we are at living.'

In addition to advice from professionals such as bereavement counsellors, solicitors and funeral directors we will be hosting live music, guest speakers, craft workshops, and a Death Cafe as well as encouraging people to create their own bucket lists and to look at the more spiritual side of death.

With informative art exhibits and an interactive workshop for children this is an event for all the family and we would love to see you there!

Dying Matters - Dispelling the Myths Seminar

As part of the Overgate Hospice 'Dying Matters' Week in Hebden Bridge, Valley Funeral Service will be holding a 'Dispelling The Myths' Seminar at Hebden Bridge Town Hall. The seminars are an excellent opportunity for people to ask questions about the workings within funeral home and also find out what really happens when someone passes away.

The Town Hall in Hebden Bridge, in partnership with the Footprint Worker's Co-Op, will be creating Hebden Bridge's first ever Zine In A Day at the Print Fair on Saturday 23rd May.

"We are looking for people who live, work and play in Hebden Bridge to come and create their own page in the Hebden Bridge Zine in a Day," explains Amy Leader, Director of The Town Hall in Hebden Bridge.

"We're holding a print fair to celebrate the talented printmakers in the north of England and wanted to use the opportunity for visitors to get their hands dirty too. Creating a community zine in a day seemed the perfect activity for Hebden Bridge."

The Print Fair is a free event on Saturday 23rd May from 11am – 4pm in The Town Hall and will showcase printmakers from the Calder Valley and throughout the north.

Free dance classes and arts festival performance

What: Outta Place are offering a free program of 10 weekly contemporary dance classes and creative workshops. The sessions will focus on technique, creative work and performance skills, building up to an outdoor public performance for the Hebden Bridge arts festival. This is a fantastic opportunity to take on a new dance style and also to bring your own ideas and moves into to the mix. Blackshaw Head Plant Sale and Spring Fair

Volunteers have been dividing and potting up hundreds of plants from local gardens, which have then been tended and nurtured through this recent windy and sub-zero weather to be ready for Saturday. As organiser Pat Munday says "If they'll survive and thrive in Blackshaw Head you know they'll romp away in your garden".

The event is in aid of the chapel's building fund. "The chapel is an important resource for the community." Pat explained, "It is used by many local groups as well as for village activities, but it costs over £250 a week to keep it open. Fund-raising events like this are a way for the local community to help to make sure that the building is maintained and improved, so that its future can be assured. And it's also a great way for people to get together, whether gardeners or not."

Rochdale Canal Boat Gathering for Tour de Yorkshire

Volunteers from the Rochdale Linear Park Group in conjunction with the West Riding Branch of the IWA have been asked to organise moorings where the Tour de Yorkshire, a new cycle race, follows the canal between Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge. Team Wiggins with Sir Bradley Wiggins, Team Sky and also the Alpecin Team with Marcel Kittel are all participating. A Sportive amateur race will also be following the same route earlier in the day.

Pennine Way Loop launch weekend

The Pennine Way was launched on April 24th 1965 so it is 50 years old this year.

The launch walk of the route starts at Hebden Bridge railway station at 10.40 am, 25 April.

About 10.40 Introduction to the Loop and the day
We walk up to the start of the Loop via Wood Top, Old Chamber, Kilnshaw Lane and the Pennine Bridleway – about 4km
About 12.00 we start the Loop, walking down Beaumont Lane, heading down Horsehold Road to arrive at Hebden Bridge Co-op – a walk of about 2km.
About 12.30 as we go on to the canal there is a short performance of songs by Calder Valley Voices.
Heading along the canal, then down Holme Street we cross the road into Bridgegate to arrive at the Packhorse Bridge.
From about 12.45 we break for lunch for about 45 mins - a chance to explore the town to get food in one of the many outlets or have a look at the 1965 exhibition in Crown Street.
About 1.30 starting at the packhorse Bridge we walk 2 km to Heptonstall, going through Hebden Bridge (Oldgate, Market Street and the Cuckoo steps) on to Heptonstall Road. We then walk up to Hell Hole rocks.
At Weavers Square in Heptonstall there will be a performance of the Pace Egg play at about 2.30pm. If there is a large group we will go along the top side of the church to avoid walking up the narrow main street.
About 3.00 we walk up the main street led by the Peace Artistes street band.
We take a path off for 2 km heading towards Hebble Hole (where the Loop ends) arriving at about 4.00. We pass Windy Harbour, Five Ways and go down to the Colden Valley.
We cross the river Colden where there is a choice:

• A led walk down to Hebden Bridge (about 30 mins)
• Going on to the New Delight (10 minutes away) for a drink and a set by the Peace Artistes
• There is a bus to Hebden Bridge from the New Delight or at 6pm there will be a led walk down to Hebden Bridge

Maidens, Mayhem & Murder

On Friday, 24th April, Ruth Kirkpatrick makes her first visit to the Shaggy Dog Club at Stubbing Wharf with a programme of stories drawn from traditional and traveller lore.

Ruth has performed for audiences in India, Iceland, Singapore and across Scotland. She creates a warm rapport with audiences and gives a personal, feisty sparkle to tales, whilst retaining the magic of the original material.

The performance starts at 8pm, but you are advised to arrive early. £7 on the door.

After the performance there will be an opportunity for audience members to share their own tales.

Picture House poster sale

The Friends of the Picture House has organised another of its popular poster sales. It's at the Picture House on Saturday April 25 from 10am to noon, posters on sale from £1 to £8, refreshments will be available.

Chair of the Friends group, Paul Knights, said, "This is our fourth movie poster sale, and they help us raise valuable funds for projects to improve the cinema for all its users.

"I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning than wandering around the auditorium - with a coffee and a slice of the famous Picture House cake - browsing for a bargain movie poster, with the satisfcation of knowing they have all been displayed in the lightboxes outside the cinema that previous poster sales helped fund."

Over the last decade chartered accountant and political economist Richard Murphy has developed an alternative economic strategy for the UK. He argues that if only the UK government was to collect a significant part of the £120 billion of tax revenue that goes astray in the UK each year, and if only it were to use its ability to print money for public benefit, then this country and everyone who lives in it could enjoy the prosperity, services, and security they deserve. Richard will explore these ideas, and more, during this meeting.

Richard was principal researcher of the Tax Justice Network from its inception until 2009 and he helped put the tax haven issue on the international agenda. His latest book is The Courageous State: Rethinking Economics, Society and the Role of Government.

Tim, who is known for his appearances on television shows such as 'Dickinson's Real Deal' and 'Secret Dealers', will value customers antiques, jewellery and other precious items for £1.50 per item which will be donated to Overgate Hospice.

Customers will also have the option to sell their items, and 5% of the commission price will again be donated to the Hospice.

Water and Light - Kate Lycett exhibition

Kate walks and runs between the river and the canal and is often struck by the contrast of the power of one, and the stillness of the other. The water mirrors the changing colours; the colours change with the light.

There is nowhere quite like Yorkshire for that fast changing light that leaves you in the gloom one moment and in luminous, saturated colour the next.

In the vastness of the landscape you can see the patches of light heading towards you across the hills, or the shadows coming ready to drain everywhere of colour.

Kate couldn't live anywhere where the sun shone all the time. The brilliance of those technicolour moments takes her breath away.

A "Master storyteller", (BBC Radio), Dominic Kelly, comes to Hebden Bridge with a brand new take on a story which has its roots in ancient Irish mythology. This epic adventure has been told in Irish homes for many generations. Dominic has spent two years researching the Ulster Cycle and selects some of the most dramatic stories to shape his show. He describes it as an epic adventure across the wild Irish landscape, with bloody battles and mysterious characters, "but there's plenty of fun in it too."

From an empty stage he conjures fallen kings and warrior queens, lovers, tricksters and troublemakers, giants and demi-gods, bloody wars and beasts of legendary proportions; creating a living, breathing landscape before our eyes.

THE DAM THAT ISN'T AND THE GREAT FLOATING PLUG OF THE COLDEN

In the late 1930s as the storm clouds gathered over Europe they also did over the upper Colden Valley. A catastrophic collapse of the neglected Noah dam released a wall of water down the valley and depositing the core of the Dam downstream. Or did it?

This lecture revisits the earlier research of Thornber and Uttley and with the aid of new and more comprehensive material suggests a slightly different scenario that additionally provides possible insights into the original construction of the Dam.

Dave Smalley has been a member of the Local History Society since his retirement in 2006 and a resident of the upper Colden Valley since 2000.  With a background of Earth Sciences, building and civil engineering, followed somewhat eclectically by Cultural Diplomacy, he now continues a lifelong interest in the evolution of the landscape and the history of man's impact on it.

Public Meeting - Science Week

During Science Week we have a public meeting on Tuesday 17th March at Blackshaw Head Methodist Church (the Chapel). Blackshaw Environmental Action Team (BEAT) have two speakers:

Roger Munday will talk about Science and religious belief - conflict or common ground? How can a rational, scientifically-literate person today sincerely believe in a supernatural, interactive God? Surely science will ultimately be able to explain everything. Are there not now more grounds than ever for doubting the existence of God? But if so, why are some significant scientists also devout Christian believers? Roger is the lay pastor/preacher at Blackshaw Head and a former architect with a particular interest in the conjunction of the physical and the spiritual in church architecture."

From Durham University we have Ben Campbell, who will be speaking on 'Climate Change, Energy and Culture: global lessons for local practice'. Ben is an anthropologist with a strong interest in mountain and upland societies around the world. He has worked in the Himalayas on subsistence agro-pastoralism, and indigenous environmental knowledge. He is a lecturer at Durham University, and has made two films on 'Shamanic Pilgrimage' and 'The Way of the Road' in northern Nepal. He brought two friends from Nepal to Cornholme in 1998, where they made terraces which he continues to cultivate as a WWOOF farm.

A look at the evolution of the workhouse from its origins in the seventeenth century to its final demise in 1948. Focusing on the local area to look at buildings, how the workhouses operated and what life was like for the inmates. Did they really exist on gruel?

Peter Higginbotham is a writer and researcher best known for his extensive study of the workhouse and related institutions. He is the author of a number of books including The Workhouse Encyclopaedia, The Workhouse Cookbook, Voices from the Workhouse and A Grim Almanac of the Workhouse, and the creator of the website www.workhouses.org.uk. He has also contributed to many radio and TV programmes including Who Do You Think You Are? Heir Hunters; Coming Home and Secrets from the Workhouse.

Mapping the Foot - Heritage Walk

As part of a long-running dispute between local families around 1600, maps were drawn up which show the lower Luddenden valley in some detail. We'll look for the features shown and use later maps to trace the development of the area.

Organised by Blackshaw Environmental Action Team (BEAT), planting of fruit trees on the land belonging to Carol & Garry King will take place on Sunday 1st March at 10 am. You are very welcome to come and give a hand for an hour or more. Children are welcome too if supervised by an adult.

If you have not planted trees before there will be people present to show you how to do it. BEAT is covered by an insurance policy.

This talk will look at the background details of Sowerby and the historic buildings lost with the building of corporation housing estates. Some childhood memories and nostalgia for village life in the late 40s and 50s.

Jean worked in retail over the years including as an Avon Lady, then spent twelve years in the media library at the Halifax Courier. Writing letters to the paper was a starting point to a later writing career which involved making herself computer literate to enable a more serious approach.

This talk considers the evidence for the origins of settlement and its associated enclosures in the Valley and the various factors that influenced its spread up to the nineteenth century.

Nigel has spent the last few years studying the historical development of the Upper Calder Valley landscape as part of his research for a PhD at the University of Lancaster.

The Manor of Wakefield was the largest in the country, covering a huge area of West Yorkshire, including the Calder Valley.  The Yorkshire Archaeological Society holds records of the manor going back to 1274 and, because the manor court was at the heart of everything that happened on the manor, its rolls are a mine of information about the tenants who lived in the area from the 13th to the 20th centuries.  This illustrated talk will show what the rolls are like, and demonstrate how they can be used to find out more about the history of families who lived on the manor, from hostile mothers-in –law to controlling fathers.  Of course, there are 670 rolls to go at, so no shortage of evidence!

Sylvia Thomas is the president of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, which owns the court rolls.  She is also a former County Archivist of West Yorkshire.

Snow White wakes up after 30 years to see how things have developed since the Great Strike, Thatcher may be dead - but her spirit lives on in the ConDem coalition , and, sadly the Labour Party is not very hearty. Nevertheless through the power of panto working class solidarity is reawakened and the struggle for workers' rights continues.

Craig Whittacker MP features in a panto monologue, and appears again as the Tory Knight in the Wakefield Mummers' play where he is defeated by the Working Class Knight- who also defeats Nigel Farage. Plus there's The Sentimentalists, local volunteer performers, curries, and raffle prizes from Cuba. Fine ale and friendship too. 2pm to 6pm at the Trades.
