Socialist Tour gig at Trades - CANCELLED

Thursday, 9 June 2016

Thanks to Peter Lazenby for this piece

Josie LongA top comedian and a leading young singer - Josie Long and Grace Petrie - have joined forces for a three-gig "Northern Socialist Tour" which includes a gig on Tuesday July 19 at the Trades Club at Hebden Bridge.

In 1999, Josie Long won the BBC New Comedy Award at the age of just 17 - making her too young for the champagne that came as part of the prize. Despite the boost the award would have given to her comedy career, she took time off performing to complete her English degree at Oxford university, returning in 2003.

Following the break, she was named best newcomer in the Chortle awards in 2005, and best breakthrough act the following year. In 2006, she also scooped best newcomer in the if.comedy awards for her solo Edinburgh debut, Kindness and Exuberance.

She was subsequently nominated for the Edinburgh comedy award three years running: 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Grace PetrieGrace Petrie is a folk singer, songwriter, and activist from Leicester. She first exploded on to the national protest scene in 2010 with the emotive anthem Farewell to Welfare, which captured perfectly the spirit of the new wave of dissent in austerity Britain.

Since then, she has written, recorded and toured relentlessly. Her unique takes on life, love and politics, and the warmth and wit with which they are delivered have won over audiences everywhere, and she has quietly become one of the most respected and prolific songwriters working in the UK today.

The gigs will raise funds for a variety of causes:

The Hebden Bridge gig will benefit the Morning Star and the £10 an hour Living Wage Campaign, and includes a speaker, Gareth Lane of the Bakers' Union and the Living Wage Campaign.

Doors 7.30, 8pm start. Tickets £6 waged. Unwaged or unable to pay - donate what you can. Raffle with prizes from Cuba.

The tour's other gigs are at Lightwaves Sports Centre in Wakefield on Monday, July 18, and the Red and Green Club at Milnsbridge on Huddersfield on Wednesday, July 20.
