It's a Wonderful Life

Christmas Eve Screenings, 11:30am, 3:30pm

Wonderful Life

Enjoy our annual Christmas Eve tradition, watching It’s A Wonderful Life on the big screen!

Morning: Doors open at 10.30am and the film will start at 11.30am. Ends around 1.45pm. Afternoon: Doors open at 2.30pm and the film will start at 3.30pm (or shortly after!). Ends around 5.45pm, in time for carols in the Square.

Frank Capra’s 1946 Christmas classic follows the tribulations of small town everyman George Bailey (James Stewart), who, at the end of his luck and deep in debt, contemplates suicide one snowy, bleak Christmas Eve. But when George wishes that he had never been born, his guardian angel Clarence (Henry Travers) takes a trip from the heavens to persuade him otherwise. After a nightmarish journey through an alternative Bedford Falls, George realizes the difference he has made to the people around him, learning lessons of love, loyalty and what it means to lead a wonderful life.

“Capra’s Dickensian masterpiece […] A genuine American classic” ***** Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Branagh Theatre Live: The Winter's Tale

Live Arts Broadcast, 7.30pm (doors 6.30pm)

Live: Present Laughter

Due to phenomenal demand, The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare’s timeless tragicomedy of obsession and redemption, returns to cinemas this festive season. This beautifully reimagined production, co-directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, features a remarkable cast including Dame Judi Dench as Paulina, alongside Tom Bateman, Jessie Buckley, Hadley Fraser, Miranda Raison and Sir Kenneth Branagh as Leontes.

King Leontes appears to have everything: power, wealth, a loving family and friends. But sexual jealousy sets in motion a chain of events with tragic consequences…

Live Arts Broadcast, 7pm (doors 6pm)

Live: Present Laughter

Matthew Warchus directs Andrew Scott (BBC’s Sherlock, Fleabag) in Noël Coward’s provocative comedy Present Laughter.

As he prepares to embark on an overseas tour, star actor Garry Essendine’s colourful life is in danger of spiralling out of control. Engulfed by an escalating identity crisis as his many and various relationships compete for his attention, Garry’s few remaining days at home are a chaotic whirlwind of love, sex, panic and soul-searching.

Captured live from The Old Vic in London, Present Laughter is a giddy and surprisingly modern reflection on fame, desire and loneliness. Note this production is filmed in front of a live audience, rather than broadcast live.

RSC Live: Timon Of Athens

Live Arts Broadcast, 7pm (doors 6pm)

Timon of Athens

Directed by Simon Godwin, Kathryn Hunter stars in the lead role, captured live at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon.

In a world driven by greed, what do we truly value? Timon has it all – money, influence, friends. But when the money runs out, Timon soon finds her influence and friends have also gone. Left alone, she flees Athens to take refuge in the woods, cursing the city she once loved. Featuring a “searing central performance” (Guardian) from award-winning actor, Kathryn Hunter, Timon of Athens is a glittering and biting satire on whether money truly buys happiness.

‘A searing central performance flips the gender dynamics as Shakespeare’s study of greed gets a ravishing revival’ – The Guardian * * * *

‘Kathryn Hunter is hypnotic in this gender-switched tragedy’ – The Telegraph * * * *

Lecture 2

This will be an evening looking at life at Foster Mill in the fifties, sixties and seventies. Allan is hoping that as well as recounting his own memories of the time, others who worked in the clothing industry in Hebden Bridge will join in the conversation and share their memories too.

Allan began work at Foster Mill in 1950 and worked as a cutter, pattern-maker and designer until his retirement. He furthered his education both at night school in Hebden Bridge and at Leeds College of Technology. He is very active locally and has made an impact as an entertaining and interesting speaker.

Blue Orchids, as a post punk psychedelic adjunct to Fall-world are well established in the music enthusiast’s consciousness, and yes, Martin Bramah was a founding father of The Fall, and as expressed recently might have reasonable grounds to even call himself The Fall, well, why not…but then he’s not daft.

Perhaps people could do with reconnecting with Martin’s oeuvre a little more deeply than obsessing over the ex Fall schtick, specially what with the recent albums being a succession of magick pop psych masterpieces choc stock (oh yes) with fabulous gems full of rich, resonant sounds and stinging, esoteric lyrics.

Alden, Patterson & Dashwood

Wadsworth Community Centre - Saturday 16th November - Doors 6:30.

Norwich based folk trio Alden Patterson and Dashwood who play fiddle, Dobro, guitar and mandolin weave rich vocal harmonies around beautifully written original songs and melodies. The Dobro confers a distinctive country feel to their relaxed, honest and confident performances. The trio are highly skilled musicians who can magically transport you to a more tranquil world with self-penned songs depicting tales of young travellers, sleepy seas and their affection for home.

Alden, Patterson & Dashwood

The trio were formed in late 2015 and have since been travelling the live circuit, winning over audiences at gigs and festivals across the UK and Europe.  They have achieved their deserved reputation with a refreshingly uncluttered tapestry of acoustic accompaniment behind the highly distinctive lead vocal Christine Alden enhanced by well-judged, innovative harmonies.

Guest support is singer songwriter, Sarah Watson, a Hebden Bridge resident. Sarah’s self-penned songs reflect the everyday experiences of being a mother, partner and woman – they are honest, uncomplicated, and heartfelt.  The  ‘country style’ of  delivery suits Sarah’s voice which is reminiscent of Nanci Griffith or Mary Hopkin.

‘It’s lovely stuff’ – Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2 Folk Show

When Harry Met Sally...

When Harry met Sally

November's Friends of the Picture House screening will be the 1989 comedy When Harry Met Sally... (15) written by Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle) and directed by Rob Reiner (This Is Spinal Tap).

A chronicle of the years-long courtship of two witty and acerbic young New Yorkers, the film's setting, dry existential humour and jazz soundtrack (for which Harry Connick Jr while forever be associated) present a clear influence of Woody Allen, while its fresh energy made When Harry Met Sally... a blockbuster that left most romantic comedies since then in its shadow or at least under its influence.

It will make you wish going to New York didn't cost a fortune nowadays.

Sir David SpiegelhalterSir David Spiegelhalter is Emeritus Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at Cambridge University. In the 1990s Sir David led the Medical Research Council team that developed WinBUGS ("Bayesian analysis Using Gibbs Sampling") that only ran on MS Windows, and its successor OpenBUGS that runs on all operating systems. These are used to forecast the spread and progress of infectious disease outbreaks. Such as Flu, SARS and Ebola.

Earlier Bayesian software had only been able to forecast diseases that followed specific patterns of spread and was complex to set up. His innovations made the system applicable to more diseases and also much simpler to use. It is now widely used in epidemiology and has been found to be useful in other fields as well.

Luckily, but not by chance, he won't risk talking about any of this; sticking instead to commenting on the use of stats in the media. Hopefully, we will all be better able to distinguish between, lies, damn lies and reliable statistics after the talk.

National Theatre Live: Hansard

Live Arts Broadcast, 7pm (doors 6pm)

Hansard

See Olivier Award-winners, Lindsay Duncan (Birdman, About Time) and Alex Jennings (The Lady in the Van, The Queen), in this brand new play from Simon Wood, broadcast live from the National Theatre in London.
It’s a summer’s morning in 1988 and Tory politician Robin Hesketh has returned home to the idyllic Cotswold house he shares with his wife of 30 years, Diana.

But all is not as blissful as it seems. Diana has a stinking hangover, a fox is destroying the garden, and secrets are being dug up all over the place. As the day draws on, what starts as gentle ribbing and the familiar rhythms of marital scrapping quickly turns to blood-sport.

Don’t miss this witty and devastating portrait of the governing class, directed by Simon Godwin (NT Live: Antony & Cleopatra, Twelfth Night) and part of National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday season.

Royal Ballet: Concerto, Enigma Variations & Raymonda Act III

Live Arts Broadcast, 7.15pm (doors 6.15pm)

Royal ballet

From The Royal Ballet’s classical origins in the works of Petipa, to the home-grown choreographers who put British ballet on the world stage, this mixed programme highlights the versatility of the Company.

Petipa’s Raymonda Act III is Russian classical ballet summarized in one act, full of sparkle and precise technique, while Ashton’s Enigma Variations is quintessentially British in every way – from its score by Elgar and period designs by Julia Trevelyan Oman, to Ashton’s signature style, the essence of British ballet. Concerto, MacMillan’s fusion of classical technique with a contemporary mind, completes a programme that shows the breadth of the Company’s heritage.

Royal Opera: Don Pasquale

Hebden Bridge Picture House - Live Arts Broadcast
Thurs 24th October at 7.30pm (doors 6.30pm)

New to the Royal Opera!

Sung in Italian with English subtitles

Approximate running time: about 2 hours 30 minutes

Don Pasquale, a wealthy old bachelor, is outraged when he hears his nephew Ernesto intends to marry the impoverished widow Norina. He determines to marry himself and disinherit Ernesto. Ernesto and Norina despair, but their friend Doctor Malatesta promises to help them – and teach Pasquale a lesson. Malatesta persuades Norina to disguise herself as his sister, then presents her to Don Pasquale as a potential bride. Pasquale is so delighted with the young woman’s docile behaviour that he demands they marry at once.

The marriage takes place – witnessed by a fake notary – after which the young bride becomes utterly overbearing and unpleasant, tormenting her ‘husband’. When Pasquale discovers a note from his ‘wife’ arranging a rendezvous with a lover, he determines to confront her and end his misery. The conspirators are now set to reveal their trickery, but will Don Pasquale forgive them?

Royal Opera favourite Bryn Terfel heads the cast for this new production of Donizetti’s comedy of domestic drama across two generations. The witty story of a middle-aged man whose supposed young wife runs rings around him – with her own ulterior romantic purpose in mind – has long delighted and surprised audiences, not least as presented with the sparkle of its music and the virtuoso skill of its performers. Damiano Michieletto’s exhilarating production shows how contemporary the characters still are and how immediate and touching the story remains.

David Ford at the Trades Club

8pm, Trades Club, Hebden Bridge

As an artist Ford still defies classification or comparison. These days, David Ford feels much more at home operating on the fringes of the music business, not trying to be famous, not trying to get rich. It might be an unconventional way to conduct a musical career, but this is not a conventional guy, as evidenced by his most recent album, Animal Spirits, a surprisingly accessible, even soulful collection of songs about economics.

As well as playing sold-out headline shows on both sides of the Atlantic, he has toured with and supported artists such as Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint, Ray LaMontagne, Aimee Mann, Sara Bareilles, Gomez, Aqualung, Richard Ashcroft, Suzanne Vega, Augustana, Ingrid Michaelson and Jakob Dylan.

70 years old and still going strong - A celebration

President and members

Local History logo

The Upper Calder Valley has a great history of groups whose aims were ‘to carry out the further education of the inhabitants and so to stimulate the public interest in educational facilities.’ So wrote Colin Spencer, local headmaster and one-time president of the Society. This aim is still evident today in our society as it has been throughout the last 70 years of its existence.
Barbara Atack (President) together with Frank Woolrych (Past President), and with contributions from other members of the society, will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Local History Society. They will look at our many achievements and activities during these years and the variety of people who have contributed to the continuing success of the society.

Wadsworth Community Centre stage another in their series of Folk/Roots gigs on Friday October 18th.

Gilmore and Roberts

Contemporary folk/acoustic duo Katriona Gilmore & Jamie Roberts combine award-winning songwriting with their astounding musicianship and trademark harmonies to create a powerful wall of sound.

Nominated three times for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Katriona (vocals, fiddle, mandolin) and Jamie (vocals, guitar) met while studying at Leeds College of Music and released their debut album in 2008.
Katriona started her professional career with folk pop sensations Tiny Tin Lady and later worked with The Albion Band and the established folk-roots band The Willows. She has featured on many acclaimed albums as a session musician.

All Is Lost is a 2013 survival drama film written and directed by J. C. Chandor, starring Robert Redford as a man lost at sea. Redford is the only cast member and was nominated for a Golden Globe as well as winning the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor.

Animat have composed and produced a new soundtrack which uses elements from the film's sound effects track in combination with their trademark dub-infused ambient electronica.

National Theatre Live: A Midsummer Night's Dream

Hebden Bridge Picture House - Live Arts Broadcast
Thurs 17th October at 7.00pm (doors 6.00pm)

‘The course of true love never did run smooth.’

Midsummer Night's Dream

A feuding fairy King and Queen of the forest cross paths with four runaway lovers and a troupe of actors trying to rehearse a play. As their dispute grows, the magical royal couple meddle with mortal lives leading to love triangles, mistaken identities and transformations… with hilarious, but dark consequences.

Shakespeare’s most famous romantic comedy will be captured live from the Bridge Theatre in London in summer 2019. Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Oliver Chris (Green Wing, NT Live: Young Marx), David Moorst (NT Live: Allelujah!) and Hammed Animashaun (The Barber Shop Chronicles) lead the cast as Titania, Oberon, Puck and Bottom.

Directed by Nicholas Hytner, this production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will build on the success of his immersive staging of Julius Caesar (NT Live 2018). The Bridge Theatre will become a forest – a dream world of flying fairies, contagious fogs and moonlight revels, surrounded by a roving audience following the action on foot.

Billy Connolly

Hailed as the UK’s most influential comedian of all time, legendary Scot Billy Connolly is coming to cinemas with this brilliant show from his final stand-up tour. Calderdale Compass Meeting

Democracy, Inequality and Brexit

Mytholmroyd Community Centre and Leisure Centre, Caldene Avenue. 2.30-5.30pm.

Alex Sobel, Labour MP for Leeds North West

Green Party speaker to be confirmed, Natalie Bennett has been invited

With a no deal Brexit, Britain faces it's biggest crisis since the Second World War. Our archaic democratic system and neo-liberal economic system have played a key role in making the UK one of the most unequal countries in Europe, and getting us into this mess.

Too much power is in the hands of too few people, and it doesn't have to be this way! Come and join our discussion on how to renew and transform our democracy and create a people-led, inclusive and participatory political system for the UK, from top to bottom.

We will discuss the far reaching reforms we urgently need including the following : a citizen led constitutional convention on democratic reform, citizen's assemblies, regional devolution, a fairer voting system where all votes count equally and caps on political donations. Only a complete overhaul of our democracy, putting it back into the hands of the people, will enable us to create a more equal society and tackle challenges such as urgent action against climate change.

Jess Morgan from England and Nels Andrews from the US have joined forces because they both - for the first time - have illustrated books to accompany the new music they want to bring to audiences in 2019.

Jess and Nels wanted to showcase something on tour which would satisfy the most avid record sleeve-readers, comic book-worms, or just about anyone feeling lost in the digital age. Wise Children

Hebden Bridge Picture House - Live Arts Broadcast
Thurs 3rd October at 7.30pm (doors 6.30pm)

Wise Children by Angela Carter

Wise Children

Adapted and Directed for the stage by Emma Rice

This is a recorded broadcast, filmed live at York Theatre Royal in March 2019

Multi-award-winning director Emma Rice brings her unique, exuberantly impish vision to Angela Carter’s great last novel in this brand-new theatre production. A big, bawdy tangle of theatrical joy and heartbreak, Wise Children is a celebration of show business, family, forgiveness and hope, with a generous dash of Shakespeare, scandal and mischief, taking the audience on a rollercoaster ride of emotion.

In Brixton, Nora and Dora Chance – twin chorus girls born and bred south of the river – are celebrating their 75th birthday. Over the river in Chelsea, their father – and greatest actor of his generation – Melchior Hazard turns 100 on the same day. As does his twin brother Peregrine. If, in fact, he’s still alive. And if, in truth, Melchior is their real father after all…

Performed by a talented ensemble cast, this entertaining, all-singing and dancing show opened to a raft of 4 and 5-star reviews at London’s Old Vic in 2018. Adapted and directed by Emma Rice, the former Artistic Director of Kneehigh and Shakespeare’s Globe, it was filmed for the cinema screen at York Theatre Royal and is ‘pure, unadulterated theatre.’ (★★★★★ Broadway World)

National Theatre Live: One Man, Two Guvnors

Hebden Bridge Picture House - Live Arts Broadcast
at 7.00pm (doors 6.00pm)

Featuring a Tony Award-winning performance from host of the The Late Late Show, James Corden, the hilarious West End and Broadway hit One Man, Two Guvnors returns to cinemas to mark National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday.

Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood, now in Brighton to collect £6,000 from his fiancée’s dad. But Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers.

Holed up at The Cricketers’ Arms, the permanently ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with one Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police and waiting to be re-united with Rachel. To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple.

National Theatre Live: Fleabag (15-TBC)

Hebden Bridge Picture House - Live Arts Broadcast at 7.30pm (doors 6.30pm)

Fleabag

Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Directed by Vicky Jones

‘Witty, filthy and supreme.’ Guardian

See the hilarious, award-winning, one-woman show that inspired the BBC’s hit TV series Fleabag, broadcast live to cinemas from London’s West End.

Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) and directed by Vicky Jones, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life.

Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose.

Playing to sold-out audiences in New York and London, don’t miss your chance to see this ‘legitimately hilarious show’ (New Yorker), broadcast live to a cinema near you.

Presented by DryWrite, Soho Theatre and Annapurna Theatre

Margaret Atwood

The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s highly anticipated sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, is revealed. The momentous literary event will be celebrated with an exclusive live cinema broadcast, as Fane Productions present an evening with the Canadian novelist, poet, literary critic and inventor.

The publication of Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985 and the current, Emmy Award – winning television series have created a cultural phenomenon, as handmaids have become a symbol of women’s rights and a protest against misogyny and oppression. Live from the London stage, Atwood will be interviewed by broadcaster and author Samira Ahmed in a conversation spanning the length of Atwood’s remarkable career, her diverse range of works, and why she has returned to her seminal handmaid story, 34 years later.

"Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in."

With exclusive readings from the new book by special guests, this will be an unmissable and intimate event with Atwood, spotlighting her signature insight, humour and intellect.

Vintage Weekend

Hebden Bridge will, once again, be the place to be on the 3rd and 4th August 2019 when the Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge hosts the iconic charity fund raising Hebden Bridge Vintage Weekend.

Vintage car weekend

This will be the 37th year for the event which is now well established as a premier attraction for the display of some 800 veteran, vintage and classic cars, motorcycles, military & commercial vehicles. Last year's event was our best ever, breaking all records in entrants, spectators and funds raised. With your help we can make this year's event even bigger.

Held in the heart of Hebden Bridge, at Calder Holmes Park, (HX7 8AU), most of the famous British marques are represented at the rally, along with famous names from across the world. The open plan layout of the site allows members of the public to get up close to the exhibits and chat to their owners. There are different display classes over the two days offering visitors a completely different show each day. Prizes will be awarded to all the winning entrants.

See Rotary Club web page for the Vintage Weekend.

Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf (U)

7.45pm (film at 8.15pm)

£1 off cinema entry price when presenting a Hebden Bridge Open Gardens programme at the Box Office!

Five Seasons

After completing a feature documentary on New York’s High Line, award-winning filmmaker Thomas Piper met the inspirational designer and plantsman, Piet Oudolf, and the idea for a new project was born. The documentary, Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf, immerses viewers in Oudolf’s work and takes us inside his creative process, from his beautifully abstract sketches, to theories on beauty, to the ecological implications of his ideas.

“For me, garden design isn’t just about plants, it is about emotion, atmosphere, a sense of contemplation. You try to move people with what you do. You look at this, and it goes deeper than what you see. It reminds you of something in the genes — nature, or the longing for nature.” – Piet Oudolf

About Open Gardens

Part of the annual Hebden Bridge Arts Festival, the Hebden Bridge Open Gardens celebrates the delights and challenges of gardening in the South Pennines. The gardens reflect the ingenuity of local gardeners and include hillside terraces with beautiful views, imaginative gardens on reclaimed land and creatively planted small town spaces. National Theatre Live: Small Island (15)

7pm (doors 6pm)
Tickets here

Adapted by Helen Edmundson
Based on the novel by Andrea Levy

Andrea Levy’s Orange Prize- winning novel Small Island comes to life in an epic new theatre adaptation. Experience the play in cinemas, filmed live on stage as part of National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday. Tickets have now sold out at the National Theatre for this production for the whole live run!

Small Island embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948 – the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury.

The play follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK.

A company of 40 actors take to the stage of the National Theatre in this timely and moving story.

Note that BBFC rating for Small Island is a 15, as it contains strong language and themes that some people may find distressing.

Brooks Williams with special guest Jack Blackman

- Wadsworth Commuity Centre - Doors 6:45

On Friday June 14th, we welcome Brooks Williams, American acoustic guitarist and singer-songwriter, whose style combines roots, jazz, blues, classical, and folk.

Brooks hails from Statesboro, Georgia, the town made famous by country-blues legend Blind Willie McTell. Ranked in the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists, he is a talented finger-picker and a stunning slide guitarist. Plus, “he has a beautiful voice,” says Americana UK, “that you just melt into.” Not one easy to pigeon-hole, Brooks' music is at the crossroads of country-blues and soulful Americana.

His massive repertoire spans classic roots and blues, with compelling covers from the likes of Bessie Smith, and Memphis Slim. Williams’ original songs are typically sophisticated musically, and yet sound immediately familiar - a sign of a skilled songwriter and are rich in blues poignancy.

Brooks Williams has worked stages worldwide for close to thirty years, touring constantly in the US, Canada, UK and Europe and toured with many musicians over the years including Boo Hewerdine and Steve Tilston.  This is the chance to see Brooks in an intimate gig at Wadsworth.

Guest support on the night is Jack Blackman who is no stranger to blues and folk. Jack is fast developing into one the most accomplished and exciting young performers on the roots scene today. He has performed his songs all across the country and as far as the Mississippi Delta. Jack has received accolades from Martin Simpson who described him as “a brilliant young gitarist.”

Autism Friendly Screening: Avengers Endgame

Hebden Bridge Picture House
Sun 26th May 13:30

Avengers

Superheroes of the Marvel comic book universe unite in Avengers: Endgame, an epic action blockbuster constructed on a monumental scale and with an insanely starry cast including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Brie Larson and many more. After half of all life in the universe was killed due to the actions of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War – including Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Strange) and T’Challa / Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) – the remaining Avengers and their allies reassemble to try and reverse those actions in one final, glorious stand.

About Autism Friendly Screenings:

Our occasional relaxed / autism friendly screenings provide opportunities for people with autism or sensory sensitivity to enjoy a trip to the cinema. They’re for anyone who would benefit from the adapted screening conditions. No-one will ask you whether you should be here, so if you think you’d enjoy coming to a relaxed screening do come along!

We aim to programme a mix of family friendly films (usually a U or PG certificate film) at weekends / during a school holiday. Adjustments at the cinema reduce over-stimulation and create a welcoming place for people with autism and others to enjoy films with their families, friends or carers.

Entry everybody £5.50

All My Sons

Broadcast live from The Old Vic in London, Academy Award-winner Sally Field (Steel Magnolias, Brothers & Sisters) and Bill Pullman (The Sinner, Independence Day) star in Arthur Miller’s blistering drama All My Sons.

America, 1947. Despite hard choices and even harder knocks, Joe and Kate Keller are a success story. They have built a home, raised two sons and established a thriving business.

Jeremy Herrin (NT Live: This House, People, Places & Things) directs a cast including Jenna Coleman (Victoria), and Colin Morgan (Merlin).

All My Sons is an Old Vic co-production with Headlong

Friends of the Picture House Presents

The Godfather (15)

May’s Friends of the Picturehouse Screening will be Francis Ford Coppola’s enduring 1971 classic The Godfather.

Continually cited as an all-time favourite, The Godfather is such a constant presence in the film world that it is really worth reminding yourself exactly why it is so adored.

The Godfather

Young Michael Corleoni (Al Pacino) has returned from WWII a hero, determined to shun the corrupt underground mafia empire of his family. Similarly, his father Vito (Marlon Brando) sees danger and dishonor in aligning his ‘business’ with the encroaching illicit drug trade. When Vito’s life is threatened, Michael’s protective instinct sees him fall within the corruptive influence of power.

As a young, independent experimental filmmaker, Coppola considered the material he had agreed to work with for commercial reasons to be low-rent and predictable; as much makes it remarkable what a subtle and mature film this is. In its three-hour running time, there isn’t a wasted moment or an irrelevant line of whispered dialogue, and every person involved delivers some of the best work of their career.

The Trump Presidency has increased nuclear tensions and instability worldwide, scrapping the Iran nuclear deal, threatening long-standing Treaties which limit US and Russian nuclear deployments, and creating a new ‘Space Force’ to enable US domination of space. All the nuclear powers, including the UK, are now ‘modernising’ their nuclear arsenals as part of a renewed nuclear arms race.

Royal Opera: Faust (Adv.12A)

Hebden Bridge Picture House Live Arts Screening
From 18:45

Faust

Experience the decadence and elegance of 1870s Paris in David McVicar’s spectacular production of Gounod’s best-loved opera.

Disillusioned with life, the aged philosopher Faust calls upon Satan to help him. The devil Méphistophélès appears and strikes a bargain with the philosopher: he will give him youth and the love of the beautiful Marguerite, if Faust will hand over his soul. Faust agrees, and Méphistophélès arranges matters so that Marguerite loses interest in her suitor Siébel and becomes infatuated with Faust.

Above all, the music includes several of popular opera’s most recognizable numbers, performed by a cast of great international singers and the Royal Opera Chorus.

National Theatre Live: All About Eve (Adv.12A)

Hebden Bridge Picture House Live Arts Screening

19:30

Gillian Anderson (X-Files, NT Live: A Streetcar Named Desire) and Lily James (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) lead in All About Eve, recorded live from the West End in London.

All About Eve

All About Eve tells the story of Margo Channing. Legend. True star of the theatre. The spotlight is hers, always has been. But now there’s Eve. Her biggest fan. Young, beautiful Eve. The golden girl, the girl next door. But you know all about Eve…don’t you…?

Lifting the curtain on a world of jealousy and ambition, this new production, from one of the world’s most innovative theatre directors, Ivo van Hove (Network, NT Live: A View from the Bridge), asks why our fascination with celebrity, youth and identity never seems to get old.

All About Eve is adapted by Ivo van Hove from the 1950 Twentieth Century Fox film by Joseph L Mankiewicz and the play “The Wisdom of Eve” by Mary Orr. Ivo van Hove directs this new stage version with set and lighting design from Jan Versweyveld, costume design by An D’Huys and music from double Mercury Prize-winner PJ Harvey, alongside Tom Gibbons’ sound design. Casting is by Julia Horan CDG.

Hebden Bridge Picture House Live Arts Screening
14:00

DumboTim Burton reworks the classic story of Dumbo the elephant in this spectacular, enthralling new live action epic starring Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell and Eva Green. Circus owner Max Medici (DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a young elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughing stock in their already struggling circus. But when they discover Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting the attention of persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) and aerial artiste Colette (Eva Green), who swoop in to make the peculiar pachyderm a star.

Other screenings of Dumbo can be seen here

Huge thanks to DP Squared for generously sponsoring April’s relaxed / autism friendly screening of Dumbo.

Entry everybody £5.50. Tickets for films are not available to purchase in advance. Seats are unreserved and sold ‘on the door’.

In each case doors open 45 minutes before the film start time shown. Normal ticket prices apply (usually family matinee ticket prices – everybody £5.50). Tickets can only be purchased for cash / by debit card, on the door in the 45 minutes before the film starts.

Edgelarks

Doors 6:45, Wadsworth Community Centre.

Edgelarks, aka BBC Award winning duo Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin, make a welcome return to what, according to their website, is one of their favourite venues. Their spring 2019 tour is a very special run of preview concerts promoting their new album.

Phillip Henry is one of the UK's finest slide guitarists and harmonica players. His playing draws on diverse influences ranging from British Folk through Indian Classical to the music of the Deep South of America. All this is coupled with a truly unique voice which is “stunningly good” (Dick Gaughan) and “utterly captivating” (Steve Knightley).

Hannah Martin is a multi-instrumentalist and in the words of magazine R2 “has a voice that is rich and complex - there is something of June Tabor about Hannah's vocal performance - a voice that is strong and flexible.”

Drawing on the traditions of British Folk the alchemy of her ever-evocative songwriting, fiddle and banjo playing and the much extolled skills of Henry on dobro, harmonica and lap steel fuse into a wholly distinctive world sound.

Calderdale Compass event

Greening the economy? Yes we can

Climate change, air pollution, loss of biodiversity, public health, waste management, food production, etc all require a greening of our economy - reducing the use of coal, oil and gas, insulating all our buildings to the highest standard, expanding renewable energy, improve public transport, etc.

How can we do all that when Brexit creates an uncertain economic and political future? To debate this Calderdale Compass is organising a public meeting on Saturday 9th March at 1.30pm at the Waterfront Hall, Hebden Bridge town hall.

The speakers include Alan Simpson, who as a Labour MP played an important roll in setting up policies for the renewable energy sector. Councillor James Baker is the leader of the Liberal Democrats at Calderdale Council will also be speaking along with a speaker from the Green Party and Jane Speller from Compass.

There is free entry to this event but donations are welcome to cover the hire of the town hall and transport costs. So come and take part in the event.

Shaggy Dog Storytellers:

Atalanta

Stubbing Wharf

Atalanta, retold by Ben Haggarty

A passionate retelling of the myth of Atalanta – a fierce tale of a remarkable virgin hunter and devotee of Artemis who sure as hell doesn't want to have anything to do with men...

This provocative story is the latest episode from Greek Mythology to get Ben Haggarty's 'Myths Unleashed' treatment. Here the veneers of classical civilisation are stripped away and the challenging, and truly awesome, implications of the tales are made clear.

Spend a night in the company of bears, rapacious centaurs, warriors and stark deities....

'a fresh dose of magic that you need in your life' Everything Theatre

The history of farming in the industrial Pennines

Dr. Stephen Caunce

Surprisingly few people are aware of the way the rise of industry in the Pennines opened up opportunites for commercial farming to which local families enthusiastically responded. So how was the feeding of ever larger populations achieved on land described in Tudor times as 'a great waste and moor'?

Come and join us for our next public meeting to hear local speakers discuss arguments for and against Brexit, plus Compass proposals for a Citizen's Assembly to help ensure all voices are heard and help find a way forward.

Picture-house

Friends of the Picture House present

Quadrophenia (15)

Mods and rockers alike are invited to January's Friends of the Picture House ouse screening of The Who's 1979 film Quadrophenia.

Quadrophenia

Although not a musical like Ken Russel's earlier film of Tommy, Quadrophenia is loosely based on the 1973 album of the same name and captures the London-Brighton milieu of the band's youth. Lambrettas, drugs, all-night discos, loose morals and, of course, massive punch-ups with Kinks fans pepper the film which is pretty much a sacred text of mod life.

The huge cast features Phil Daniels, Leslie Ash, Timothy Spall, Sting, Toyah Wilcox and Ray Winstone.
