The Alan Petford Memorial Lecture
THE DAM THAT ISN'T AND THE GREAT FLOATING PLUG OF THE COLDEN
Dave Smalley
Dave has agreed to re-visit his lecture that was originally part of the research that contributed to the compilation of the late Alan Petford’s festschrift History in the South Pennines. Initially it was about investigating another “fax fallacy”, a giant floating plug of dam wall! But like much research, as it developed it revealed unexpected insights into the early construction history of dams built for the textile industry.
Dave Smalley has been a resident of the upper Colden valley since 2000. With a background of Earth Sciences and the building industry followed somewhat eclectically by Cultural Diplomacy, he now continues a lifelong interest in the evolution of the landscape and the history of man’s impact on it. Since the first presentation in 2015 he had been researching aspects of the Stansfield road network from the late eighteenth century to the early 1920’s. He is currently studying the art history and manufacture of Victorian stained glass.
Organised by the Local History Society. Meetings will be held at Hebden Bridge Methodist Church, which has now been equipped with chairs to replace the pews. It is also hoped to make recordings of the live talks available to members for two weeks following the event. See www.hebdenbridgehistory.org.uk for more info.

THE MEDIEVAL PARK OF ERRINGDEN
Nigel Smith
The history of Erringden Park is obscure. This talk presents what can be discovered about the park’s past in both a local and regional context. Documentary and landscape evidence uncovers the changing boundaries of the park and how those boundaries were constructed. Comparative evidence suggests how the park was stocked and managed, together with the hunting methods that are likely to have been used. However, analysis points to a multifunctional park whose principal function may not be what you think. The park was abolished in the mid-fifteenth century and the way in which it was divided up and settled will be discussed, together with the controversies that surrounded its later existence.
Nigel is the Archivist and Publications Officer of the Hebden Bridge Local History Society. His research interests focus on the landscape and agricultural history of the Upper Calder Valley and the wider South Pennines. He is a regular contributor to the Transactions of the Halifax Antiquarian Society and has edited and authored a number of books, the latest of which is on Erringden Park.

Spinning through the West Riding
John Cruickshank
Hand-spinning was a crucial process in cloth-making before the introduction of powered industrial processes in mills, but it and other wool processes are in many ways now poorly understood. Fresh insights into yarn-supply are now emerging from current work on the pre-industrial textile industries of the West Riding. Spinning may have been women's work, and the skills require to produce the different yarns needed must not be underestimated!
John Cruickshank is a retired orthopaedic surgeon whose Leeds University PhD examined the early modern development of Headingley-cum-Burley, a township just outside the clothing district. He is now studying the industrial development of the adjacent clothing townships between 1540 and 1800.

Birds and Beasts and Carol Hodge
(electro-acoustic folk/rock double header)
Birds and Beasts write melodic and memorable songs inspired by animals and the natural world. Anna (vocals, bass) and Leo Brazil (guitar, percussion, vocals) originally came up with the idea whilst snowbound in a log cabin, deep in the forest of Anna’s native Germany.
“… you become entwined in the rhythm and quality of the musicianship. Psychedelic folk infused with cosmic and disco pop” (Loafers)
Carol Hodge is a seven-fingered, piano-pounding, Yorkshire-dwelling singer-songwriter. Think Regina Spektor meets Billy Bragg, but with fewer digits and a continuous existential crisis, sandwiched between bitter irony and relentless optimism.

Jerome Caminada, the real Sherlock Holmes
With Joseph O'Neill
1.45pm for 2pm start
The next speaker at the Todmorden U3A on the 16th September will be Joe O'Neill who will give a Zoom talk entitled 'Jerome Caminada, the real Sherlock Holmes'. Jerome Caminada was born on March 15 1844 in Deansgate, Manchester, opposite the Free Trade Hall. He joined the Manchester City Police Force in 1868, at the age of 23.and for the next 30 years, he worked tirelessly to clean up the crime-infested streets of Victorian Manchester.
Showing an early aptitude, he was soon promoted to the detective department, which operated from Manchester Town Hall. A master of disguise and an expert in deduction, Caminada tackled many shady characters and nefarious criminals in his daily work in the city's dark underworld, including desperate thieves, clever con artists, expert forgers and even cold-blooded murderers. Many of his cases bear the hallmarks of the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and, during his lifetime, he was often compared to his fictional counterpart, Sherlock Holmes.

From Calderdale Green Party
Reform our electoral system
With our First Past The Post (FPTP) electoral system at general, regional and local elections the outcome of elections are resulting in millions of votes not counting for anything.
At the 2019 general election the conservative party increased its votes share by 1% but ended up with a majority of 80 MPs in Parliament as a result. This was because the rest of the votes in the constituencies did not count towards their national share of the votes.
That is why there is a widespread campaign – including in the Labour Party - to introduce an electoral system where every vote counts, and Parliament and local authorities actually reflect the views of the voters.
This can still be done whilst having constituency MPs. For example 75% of MPs can be elected on a constituency basis and 25% of MPs are top-ups so Parliament reflects the views of the voters nationally. The same for ward councillors.
To discuss our electoral system and how it can be reformed there is a public Zoom meeting on Tuesday 7th September at 7:30 pm with Natalie Bennett speaking. If you want to be emailed an invitation to the online meeting, please email info@calderdale.greenparty.org.uk by Sunday 5th September.

Secret Wartime Britain:
With Colin Philpott
1.45pm for 2pm start
On the 19th of August at 1400 Todmorden u3a will welcome the author Colin Philpott who will give a Zoom talk entitled 'Secret Wartime Britain'.
During the Second World War, thousands of sites across Britain were requisitioned to support the war effort. Additionally, countless others were built from scratch regardless of cost. Often the purpose of these locations was concealed, even from those living close by. Colin has compiled a fascinating collection of examples of hidden places all over the country, many of which still exist today, albeit often now used for different purposes.
They include underground factories, storage sites and headquarters; spy and communication centres; interrogation and POW camps; dummy sites; research facilities for chemical and atomic weapons; treasure stores in stately homes and even royal retreats in the event of invasion. Colin's talk reveals where these sites are and examines how successfully they were kept secret.
The talk is free to all current Todmorden members who will recieve a link. If you are not a u3a member but would like to attend the talk you can do so free by requesting an invitation at www.u3atod.org.uk or contact info@u3atod.org.uk

The First Film with Director Q&A

Book online (advance online) here
Was the film industry born in Yorkshire? That's the question asked by David Wilkinson in this enthralling documentary into the origins of cinema, the fruit of a decades-long quest to prove to the world that the birthplace of motion pictures was not America or France but rather, Leeds; and the first true filmmaker the enigmatic Louis Le Prince.
Wilkinson investigates his career, his projection machine and mysterious demise: in 1890, shortly before he was due to travel to America and demonstrate his discovery, he boarded a train from Dijon to Paris: and was never seen again.
Stay after the film for a director Q&A session.

The Biscuit – A History of a Very British Indulgence
British people eat more biscuits than any other nation; they are as embedded in our culture as fish and chips or the Sunday roast. The Todmorden U3A welcomes Dr Lizzie Collingham on Thursday 15th April for a Zoom talk at 1400 on these tasty treats that often evoke nostalgic memories of childhood.
Lizzie Collingham's talk begins in Roman times and follows the humble biscuit's transformation from durable staple for sailors, explorers and colonists to sweet luxury for the middling classes to comfort food for an entire nation.
Like an assorted tin of biscuits, this illustrated talk has something to offer for everyone, combining recipes for hardtack and macaroons, Shrewsbury biscuits and Garibaldis, with entertaining and eye-opening vignettes of social history.
The talk is available to all Todmorden U3A members and if you are not yet a member you can attend one talk free by requesting an invitation to this zoom event. We're always delighted to welcome new members. Contact details: www.u3atod.org.uk; info@u3atod.org.uk

Hebden Bridge Duck Race
Tickets on sale now
With the Easter Monday Duck Race only days away, it's all happening down on Duck Farm as they get ready for the big day.
This year the annual event, which is organised by the Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge, is having to be a virtual event from a secret location, because of the covid restrictions that are currently in force.
Being virtual and now titled 'Totally Quackers', it has allowed the organisers to run riot with their imaginations.
Rotary Duck Race organiser Roger Benn said, "Duck Farm is the fictional setting for the event and followers of 'Tales from Duck Farm' on social media have been introduced to Farmer Duck's family, plus 3 pesky character ducks, Wonder, Spider and Hulk, who are intent on causing mischief. If people visit our website www.hebdenbridgeduckrace.uk they can buy race tickets, vote on the artwork, follow the ‘Tales from Duck Farm’ and then watch the race online at 3pm on Easter Monday, 5th April 2021.
Everybody wants a smile at the moment and hopefully we can bring them one”.

Around the UK in Classic Railway Posters
Jane Ellis
The “golden age” of the railway poster was probably between the wars, but the poster as we know it evolved from humble beginnings in the 19th century, and improved with advancements in colour printing, before declining with the formation of BR. The railway companies used the skills of well-known artists of the day to create the posters, and we shall see many examples of their work.
Jane Ellis is actively involved with the Industrial History Section of Yorkshire Archaeological & Historical Society, and has been running the Yorkshire branch of the Railway Ramblers’ Club for over 25 years. She is also secretary of a Photographic Society in Leeds.

Literary and Scientific Society AGM
11.00am via Zoom
The Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society was founded in 1905
'To carry out the further education of the inhabitants by means of assembling together to read and hear papers on subjects kindred to such an association.'
The society grew rapidly and developed several sections covering a variety of interests. Most of these groups have now become independent so we need to revise our aims and objectives and find a contemporary role for the society in the community.
Over the past three years we have instigated a series of well attended lectures on a variety of topics from eminent speakers. Do we want to continue with these?
To do that we would need your support and ideas; support as a member of the committee or undertaking specific tasks, and ideas of how we can go forward.
So we ask you to respond to the following:-
Would you be willing to;
1. Join the committee
2. Give technical help, especially in setting up meetings both in person or online.
3. Find speakers
4. Develop events
5. Taking minutes
Do you have any ideas for;
1. Speakers
2. Types of events
3. Subjects to cover
We are holding our AGM on Saturday 20th March at 11.00am via Zoom. It would be great to have some responses by then so that we have some ideas of our future.
Please send contact details to me so that we can send you a link for the meeting.

Lloyd George, Spanish Flu, and the 1918 General Election in the Calder Valley
Alan Fowler
In September 1918, Lloyd George fell ill in Manchester Town Hall, and spent a week in the Lord Mayor's Parlour. Despite his illness he managed to intervene in the major industrial dispute in the cotton industry. He returned to London for further recovery, to plot the end of the war and a general election. The latter posed a particular problem given the nature of his coalition.
The 1918 General Election saw the Labour Party leave the government and fight independently, while only a minority of Liberal candidates had Lloyd George's support, unlike a majority of Conservative candidates. The election in the Calder Valley was unusual in that when the Liberal candidate, Higham, got Lloyd George's support, much to the surprise of local Conservatives, the Conservative candidate, Simpson-Hinchcliffe, was forced to retire. Then a new candidate emerged. Major Barker was a 'soldiers candidate' though clearly an independent conservative. Labour also had a candidate for the first time: J W Ogden, a leading cotton trade unionist and President of the TUC in 1918.
The Calder Valley illustrates many of the key issues of the election but in an unusual context, as well as future trends.
Alan Fowler taught economic and social history at Manchester Polytechnic and Manchester Metropolitan University for 40 years. He has given many memorable talks to the Society.

John F Bateman
Britain's foremost reservoir engineer and local lad. The making of Hebden's earth embankment reservoirs.Michael O'Grady
John F Bateman, born 1810, from the Moravian settlement in Lower Wyke, Halifax, revolutionized Britain's reservoir infrastructure and the science of data around geography and rainfall, as well as establishing procedures for structural design and control of flow between and from linked reservoirs. Responsible for more than twice the reservoir projects than those of his nearest rivals, Batemen started in Manchester then established offices in London in order to consult world-wide.
The three Upper Calder Valley projects (Widdop, Walshaw Dean and Gorple) were all designed by Bateman. He enjoyed the common touch with contractors, engineers, landowners, industrialists and Parliamentary regulators alike, never losing sight of the needs of the people, while rising to pre-eminence in his field and in public life. There's a lot to tell about the water that comes out of Calderdale's taps.
Dr Michael O'Grady is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in Web and Digital Media in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Huddersfield. He is currently mixing his interest in local history, a past career in civil engineering and the day-job (digital visualisation) to investigate the processes and details of building the six reservoirs at Widdop, Walshaw Dean and Gorple valleys.

This talk is designed to complement an exhibition planned by the Local History Society on the subject of "Who Built Hebden Bridge?" It will concentrate on the area known as "The Croft" between Commercial Street, New Road and Bridge Gate, which was an open field until the 1860s. It eventually encompassed many of the town's most important and iconic buildings including the Co-op Hall, Hope Chapel, the library, mills, pubs, clubs, a bank, a surgery, a wood yard, nurses home, police station, lodging houses, numerous shops and a reservoir!

The History of Social Housing in Heptonstall
Mary Ellen
2019 marked the 100th anniversary of British social housing, a revolution in house-building that remains as testament to a democratic drive to enable working-class people (especially those 'Heroes' returning from WWI) to live in healthy, affordable, family-friendly communities. Heptonstall has one such planned estate, whose history offers up some fascinating insights into modern housing and its inhabitants.
Dr Mary Ellen calls herself a cultural historian. She was Head of English at a Norfolk school before moving to Heptonstall. She has lived in the area for five years now and has immersed herself in its local history and landscape. She was a founding member of the Heptonstall Historical & Heritage Society and played Colonel Robert Bradshaw in last year's production of 'The Battle of Heptonstall'.

Special U3A Zoom Talk on Slow the Flow
A Special Zoom Event for Todmorden U3A members At 7pm on the 11th January 2021.
After Covid 19 there is probably no subject of more concern to Calderdale residents than flooding, and therefore with the winter season strong winds and rain upon us, the Todmorden U3A has decided to put on a special event called ‘Slow the Flow’. It will be in addition to the regular meetings and speakers so will be at 7 pm on Monday 11th January.
We often think that natural flood management means planting trees, building dams or building slow release ponds, but nothing could be further from the truth as Adrian Horton will outline in his talk. He will show how we can all help flood management whether you have a garden, a drive or a yard, everyone can play their part.

Journeys between the worlds
John Billingsley
The centralised system of mediaeval parishes meant a soul still had a long journey to take before it passed out of this world, to the nearest consecrated ground. Certain routes – corpseways – became established. They can be seen as ancestral trails for our communities, and are thick with folklore and custom – and can often still be traced today, many centuries after their origin. John looks at the characteristics of corpseways, and walks us through three that were oriented on Heptonstall.
John Billingsley is convenor of the Society's Folklore Section, author/editor of several books on folk tales, folk-magic and ritual protection marks, and editor of Northern Earth magazine.

Baghlan Boy, a novel by Michael Crowley online launch
Farood Abdali is just eleven years old when a drone strike destroys his family's mud-built home in Baghlan Province, Afghanistan, killing his father and leaving him and his older brother alone.
His brother sells the family sheep to pay an 'agent' to take Farood to the West, not knowing when he will be back but being hopeful that he'll one day return with liberating wealth.
We skip forward eight years to a prison where nineteen-year-old Farood is beginning a life sentence for a crime he says he didn't commit. Forever a captive, despite his will to escape, can Farood Abdali break the mould and forge a better life?
Baghlan Boy is published by The Book Guild.
19:30 – 21:00, in association with Hebden Bridge Town Hall.
Common Problems: The history of common land in northern England
Angus Winchester
Northern England contains the largest expanses of common land in the country, but this is only a fragment of the extent of the communally used land which existed before the wave of moorland enclosures in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Commons were an integral part of the rural economy, providing not only essential grazing for livestock but also fuel for the hearth, building materials and other resources. This lecture explores how past societies tried to achieve sustainable management of these shared resources on which they depended for their livelihood.
Angus Winchester is Emeritus Professor of History at Lancaster University. He has longstanding research interests in the history of upland landscapes and of common land in particular. His publications include The Harvest of the Hills: rural life in northern England and the Scottish Borders, 1400-1700 (Edinburgh University Press, 2000). He is currently working on a book on the history of common land in Britain.

Laura Annie Wilson: Suffragette, Builder, Engineer
Anne Kirker
Laura Annie Wilson was no ordinary woman. During her lifetime she was trade unionist, suffragette, indus-trialist and engineer, MBE, house builder and President of the Women's Engineer-ing Society: often at the same time! Hers was truly an extraordinary life.
Anne Kirker's interest in Laura Annie Wilson began in 2018, when the Calderdale Industrial Museum was asked to collaborate on an exhibition of her life to celebrate the centenary of women obtaining the vote and the foundation of the Woman's Engineering Society.
Anne has been studying aspects of local and family history for 25 years. She works as a guide for Calderdale Heritage Walks and volunteers for Calderdale Industrial Museum.

The Alan Petford Memorial Lecture
The Fieldens and their legacy in Todmorden
Anne Mealia
There's hardly any aspect of life in nineteenth-century Todmorden that the Fielden family didn't influence: work, religion, education and even sport. They commissioned a number of very striking buildings by architect John Gibson. The Fieldens' influence is still felt in the town today. This talk explores the colourful characters that built up the Fielden enterprise from small-scale weaving, through radical politics and an unhappy marriage to untold wealth and success.
Anne Mealia is a professional genealogist and historical researcher who runs her own research business, Evergreen Ancestry. She carries out research for individuals, academics, and TV companies as well as teaching family history. She leads historical walks round Todmorden and the surrounding area and is on the Committee of Hebden Bridge Local History Society. Her own research interests include the Fieldens and the Dobroyd area of Todmorden.
Hebden Bridge History Society talks, until at least Christmas, will be held via Zoom. See the History Society website for more info.
Idiot Prayer: Nick Cave Alone at Alexandra Palace
Doors open at 7.15pm and the event starts at 8pm. The expected finishing time is 9.40pm.
Nick Cave play his songs at the piano in a rarely seen stripped back form, from early Bad Seeds and Grinderman, right through to the most recent Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album, Ghosteen.
The film features tracks including Into My Arms, The Mercy Seat, Higgs Boson Blues and Girl In Amber. Recorded in June 2020 and initially imagined as an online only event, fans will now be able to watch the film in cinemas as an extended cutfeaturing four unseen performances.
Recorded as the UK slowly emerged from lockdown and conceived as a reaction to the confinement and isolation of the preceding months, Idiot Prayer is a souvenir from a strange and precarious moment in history. The performance was filmed by award winning Cinematographer Robbie Ryan (The Favourite, Marriage Story, American Honey) in Alexandra Palace's stunning West Hall. It was edited by Nick Emerson (Lady Macbeth, Emma, Greta) and the music was recorded by Dom Monks.
Tickets must be purchased in advance and are priced £15 / £13 / £10. Theatre: Uncle Vanya
Doors open at 6.15pm and the event starts at 7.00pm.
The expected finishing time is 9.40pm.
Filmed at the Harold Pinter Theatre, London in August 2020
Sonya (Aimee Lou Wood) and her Uncle Vanya (Toby Jones) while away their time on an isolated estate, visited occasionally only by the local doctor Astrov (Richard Armitage). However, when Sonya's father Professor Serebryakov (Roger Allam) suddenly returns with his restless, alluring, new wife Yelena (Rosalind Eleazar), polite facades crumble and long repressed feelings start to emerge. As the conflicted family are forced to confront their despair, loneliness and each other, can the beauty of life help them find new hope?
Following its critically acclaimed opening in London earlier this year, Sonia Friedman Productions' stunning 5-star production Uncle Vanya, a new adaptation of the Anton Chekhov masterpiece by Conor McPherson, directed by Ian Rickson, was abruptly halted as the world went into lockdown.
Now, as the majority of theatres across the world remain in darkness, Uncle Vanya's exquisite ensemble overcome the considerable challenges of working in a global pandemic, returning to the Harold Pinter Theatre to film the 'perfect' (5-star The Guardian) production, which is currently nominated for four Olivier Awards. Marrying the intimacy of the screen with the electricity of live performance in an exciting new hybrid of film and theatre, this Sonia Friedman Productions/ Angelica Films co-production is far more than simply a capture of the play. Full of tumultuous frustration and hidden passions, but brimming with hope and optimism for the future, Uncle Vanya is a must-see event for our times.

Royal Opera: Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci
Doors 6pm
Damiano Michieletto's Olivier Award-winning production of Mascagni and Leoncavallo's one-act operas is a thrilling, cinematic experience.
Two opera classics are drawn together in this wonderfully observed re-creation of life in a south Italian village as a travelling theatre visits and emotions erupt. The award-winning production by Damiano Michieletto presents vividly the fast-moving, shocking events brought about by secret love and uncontrollable jealousy.
The music is full of Italianate melody in the great choruses that bring the villagers together in celebration and revelry, alongside the solo arias and tense confrontations that provoke violence and tragedy. With thrilling singing and intense drama, 'Cav and Pag' distils into one wonderful night out, the enduring appeal of Italian opera in its most familiar form.

Royal Ballet: Swan Lake
Hebden Bridge Picture House
Wednesday 1st April at 7.15pm (doors 6.15pm)
Liam Scarlett's glorious production of Swan Lake, new in 2018, returns for its first revival. While remaining faithful to the Marius Petipa/Lev Ivanov text, Scarlett's additional choreography and John Macfarlane's magnificent designs breathe new life into what is arguably the best-known and most-loved classical ballet. The entire Company shines in this eternal tale of doomed love, a masterpiece filled with iconic moments. Tchaikovsky's first score for ballet soars with its symphonic sweep and combines perfectly with exquisite choreography from the grand pas de deux of Prince Siegfried and Odile to the swans at the lakeside. An intoxicating mix of spectacle and intimate passion, the overall effect is irresistible.
Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman, Odette, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive, allowing her to regain her human form only at night.
The evil spirit Von Rothbart, arbiter of Odette's curse, disguises his daughter Odile as Odette to trick Siegfried into breaking his vow of love. Fooled, Siegfried declares his love for Odile, and so dooms Odette to suffer under the curse forever.

Common Problems
The history of common land in Northern England 1851 – 1901
Professor Angus Winchester
Northern England contains the largest expanses of common land in the country, but this is only a fragment of the extent of the communally used land which existed before the wave of moorland enclosures in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Receiving plaudits both in U.K and Europe, recent highlights include “sell out” shows at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018 and 19, Festival at the Edge performance in 2017 and a standing ovation for his duet with Jan Blake at the Scottish International Storytelling Festival in 2019.

Royal Opera: Fidelio
Hebden Bridge Picture House
Tuesday 17 March at 7.15pm (doors 6.15pm)
Live from the Royal Opera House
Beethoven's only opera is a masterpiece, an uplifting story of risk and triumph. In this new production, conducted by Antonio Pappano, Jonas Kaufmann plays the political prisoner Florestan, and Lise Davidsen his wife Leonore (disguised as 'Fidelio') who daringly sets out to rescue him. Set in strong counterpoint are the ingredients of domestic intrigue, determined love and the cruelty of an oppressive regime.
The music is transcendent throughout and includes the famous Act I Quartet, the Prisoners' Chorus and Florestan's impassioned Act II cry in the darkness and vision of hope. Tobias Kratzer's new staging brings together the dark reality of the French Revolutionary 'Terror' and our own time to illuminate Fidelio's inspiring message of shared humanity.

The Occupation of the American Mind
8pm Golden Lion, Todmorden
Israel's ongoing military occupation of Palestinian territory and its repeated invasions of the Gaza strip have triggered a fierce backlash against Israeli policies virtually everywhere in the world — except the United States.
The Occupation of the American Mind takes an eye-opening look at this critical exception, focusing on pro-Israel public relations efforts within the U5. Narrated by Roger Waters, lead singer of rock band Pink Floyd. Featuring leading observers of the IsraeIi-Palestinian conflict, the film explores how the Israeli government, the US Government, and the pro-Israel lobby have joined forces, often with very different motives, to shape American media coverage of the conflict in Israel's favour. Friends of the Picture House Present
Persepolis (12a)
March's Friends of the Picture House screening is the 2008 animated adaptation of Marine Satrapi's graphic novel Persepolis.
Telling the story of Satrapi's childhood as the daughter of liberal intellectuals during the Iranian revolution of 1979, the 8-year war with Iraq that followed, and Satrapi's exile to Austria and Paris, co-directors Vincent Paronnaud and Satrapi herself set the two-tone style of the book in motion, with humour and the young rebel's beloved rock music tempering the atmosphere of horror and repression in her family's life.

The Wanted 18
7.30pm Trades Club, Hebden Bridge
The Wanted I8 tells the true story of a Palestinian committee in the town of Beit Sahour (near Bethlehem) that purchased a herd of cows from a friendly kibbutz owner and used them in a bid to seIf-sustainably produce milk and thus undermine Israeli control and occupation.
Seamlessly combining the comic and tragically absurd, it maps the story of non-violent resistance during the first Intifada and how I8 cows came to be declared 'dangerous for the security of the state of Israel'.
Celebrating our woodland heritage
Chris Atkinson
Woodlands in the South Pennines have until now received only minimal attention concerning their development and use through human history. Since 2017 communities across the South Pennines have been working to change this. Led by Pennine Prospects as part of the National Lottery Heritage Funded project and supported by the University of Bradford, volunteers have undertaken 38 archaeological woodland surveys and 5 excavations, all of which have aimed to improve our understanding of the role of woodlands in human history.
Chris Atkinson is an archaeologist with many years' experience in community archaeology and landscape surveys. As Heritage and Landscape Development Manager at Pennine Prospects, he has played a leading role in the 'Celebrating our woodland heritage' project. Making and repairing highways through the Wakefield manor court, 1550 – 1700
Murray Seccombe
It can be difficult to find out much about local roads and how they were looked after before parish and turnpike trust records in the 1700s. The Wakefield court leet records provide an exceptional – possibly unique – record of complaints, repairs and local office holding in the townships of Halifax parish in the turbulent years of Elizabethan and Stuart England. This lecture will discuss the place of highway policy and practice in the transition from manorial regulation to governance through the parish and county.
Murray is Secretary of Hebden Bridge Local History Society, in the throes of doing his PhD at Lancaster University, researching road administration in the South Pennines, c. 1550-1800, with a special emphasis on aspects of social development and local governance. His background was in the not-for-profit transport sector, and he has lived and walked in Hebden Bridge area for 35 years.

The Runaways with Director Q&A
Hebden Bridge Picture House
4.30pm (doors 4.15pm)
When misguided father of three, Reith (Mark Addy) passes away, his children, Angie (Molly Windsor), Polly (Macy Shackleton) and Ben (Rhys Connah), are left to cope alone; Angie acting as surrogate mother.
As Whitby, the coastal town where they live, closes up for winter their Uncle Blythe (Lee Boardman) suddenly returns from prison, harbouring a grudge over a long-standing family debt. With no other option Angie is forced to go on the run with her siblings and two of the family’s donkeys.
After a desperate scrabble through the alleyways of Whitby, the three children escape in to the harsh landscape and wilderness of the North York Moors. Here Angie begins an odyssey, the search for their estranged mother Maggie (Tara Fitzgerald).
With Blythe in close pursuit, the children and donkeys venture west across the country, crossing paths with chancers, thieves, and a boy on a horse named Toby (James Senneck).
Angie ever resilient, forces the family on despite the hardships, ever hopeful of meeting the mother she’s idolised since birth, but what if she doesn’t live up to expectations? Through the many lessons learnt along the way, Angie, and their siblings discover for better or worse, what it truly means to be a family.
This screening will be followed with a Q&A with Director, Richard Heap. This is Richard Heap’s debut fiction feature film. He has previously been twice BAFTA long-listed and nominated for Grierson Award

Beginner Folk Club - Taster Sessions
The club is aimed at beginners who would like to play folk music with others but don't feel able or confident going to pub sessions.
We'll be playing tunes and songs at a slow speed, building confidence and looking at how you can join in at regular pub sessions without needing to pick up fast tunes. The key thing is not to worry about being 'good enough' - everybody will be in the same boat! :)
Come along and join us at the taster sessions (£3) Thursday 23rd & Monday 27th January 7:45 - 9:30 at the Stubbing Wharf.
Survivors of Torture Fundraiser
7.45pm
Hebden Bridge Little Theatre
This 65 minute performance is a result of extensive research into the dark world of state-sanctioned torture and its stark impact on victims, perpetrators, families and those who collude in the ‘process’.
Immersive in style, Feeding the Darkness frames verbatim monologues, and dramatic monologues based on true stories, duologues, poetry and testimonies which challenge our ignorance and avoidance of this sensitive and disturbing subject.
It features such wide-ranging material as the experiences of the mother of Private Lynddie England (court-marshalled for her role in the abuse of Abu Ghraib detainees), that of a Kurdish asylum seeker at an appeal tribunal, and the role of trained medical professionals in state sanctioned torture, amongst many others.
Feeding the Darkness is on at the Little Theatre, for one night only, Friday 24 January 2020, starting at 7.45pm (doors open 7pm).
Tickets are £10, and are available from the Bookcase, Market Street, Hebden Bridge, and from The Little Bird Café, 53 Halifax Road, Todmorden.
This production has been commissioned by Q-CAT (Quaker Concern for the Abolition of Torture) and is raising money for the Survivors of Torture Activity Fund.
To book a performance or for further information please contact Journeymen Theatre
Proceeds go to Survivors of Torture Fund.

Friends of the Picture House present
Way Out West + The Music Box (U)
January's Friends of the Picture House screening is a double bill of the Laurel and Hardy classics Way Out West and The Music Box.
The Music Box might be the duo's best known short film, and perhaps best known film of all, pitting the hapless friends against the might of a piano that must be lifted up a long flight of stairs.
The main feature, Way Out West, has equally high stature in the pair's canon, seeing them tied up in the business of scheming gold prospectors as they travel to the frontier to deliver a deed. The feature length format gave Stan and Ollie the chance to show the many strings to their bows, such as delightful song and dance numbers.
It's a treat to have these two on the big screen!

A Victorian artist paints Hebden Bridge
Discovering the landscape, paintings of John Holland
Diana Monahan and Justine Wyatt
In 1869, at the White Horse in Hebden Bridge, there was an exhibition and sale of sixty-one paintings of the area by established landscape artist John Holland. This talk will focus especially on ‘View of Hebden Bridge from Fairfield’ which captures Hebden Bridge at a time of considerable change.
Both Diana and Justine are long-standing and active members of HBLHS. Their interests include walking the local landscape, and this has fed their historical researches. Diana began by researching the area around her own house, but has expertise in many areas; Justine has published her research into local water-powered industry and Fustianopolis.
