Singer and bouzouki player Daoirí Farrell holds two prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards as well as receiving three nominations in the RTÉ Folk Awards. He has toured and played festivals in the UK, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, Spain and more. He has also toured with the all-star Transatlantic Sessions to major venues across the UK.

A Yorkshire Year: 366 days of folklore, customs and traditions

Catherine Warr will be exploring the rich diversity of the customs of the county and asking what actually is 'a custom' and how does folklore develop in a community, including here in the Calder Valley.
Catherine Warr runs the YouTube channel 'Yorkshire's Hidden History' and has become a leading young local historian.

She has a passion for making history engaging and accessible to all, with videos that have been viewed by thousands of people all over the world. In 2021 she became the Engagement Fellow for the British Association for Local History and continues to work closely with others in the local history world.

Screening of Alice - A fight for life

The Picture House, Hebden Bridge

On 29 September 2022, RWK Goodman are hosting a charity screening of Alice - A Fight for Life at The Picture House, Hebden Bridge. The documentary is being aired to mark the 40th anniversary.

Alice Jefferson developed the asbestos related disease of mesothelioma after working at Cape Insulation's Acre Mill asbestos plant in Hebden Bridge.

The event will commence at 12 noon. There will be a screening of the documentary, followed by refreshments and a specialist panel Q&A to conclude.

This is a fundraising event which is free to attend, however we would appreciate a donation of either £10 or £20 per person to be distributed to the asbestos support groups RWK Goodman support.

Friends of Hebden Bridge Station

10.30-12 pm

There are only a few gardening sessions left, including bulb planting, before the Friends of Hebden Bridge Station finish outdoor work for the year. Litter picking and watering still continues. On 24th September we will be gardening for an hour and then at 11:30 we will hold our (usually brief) Annual General Meeting.

Weather permitting, we shall be buying some refreshments from the café and holding the meeting at the front of the Station. Otherwise we shall hold it indoors in the Station Manager's office. New volunteers welcome.

'Hymns Ancient & Modern 1861-2013: its Rise, 
Development and Influence' Rev. James Dickinson 

James' talk will explore the history of Anglican Hymnody. He will detail the years 1850 to 1920 and trace the haphazard beginnings of the 'the hymn' in the Church of England to the eventual dominance of, and the rivalry between, Hymns Ancient & Modern and the English Hymnal.  James will be providing musical accompaniment alongside his talk.

James Dickenson was ordained as a priest in 1971 and was Vicar of St. Edmund's Allerton for eleven years. He regularly preaches at Methodist and other churches in his local area of Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He has also taught history, religious education and mathematics and lectured on antique maps and topographical books. His speciality is Anglican Hymnody, and he is currently working on a PhD thesis at Durham University titled, The evolution of hymnody within the Church of England, 1790 to 1825.

Miranda Sykes and Hannah Martin have played our venue before to sell-out audiences albeit with different musical partners and now they have formed a new duo, Sykes-Martin.

This is an exciting new collaboration from two of British folk's finest voices as they join forces to present a set of songs that takes them back to their shared roots in traditional music. With artists of such acclaim there is no need to tell you of their beautiful singing and fine musicianship.

In support we have Maddie Morris, recipient of the Radio 2 Young Folk award in 2019. Maddie's music is powerful poetic and insightful, evoking thoughts on contemporary social issues.

In 1969 Peter Thornborrow bought an old semi-derelict farmhouse on the edge of the moors above Hebden Bridge, eventually winning a Civic Trust award for the 'Best house restoration in the North West of England.' In 1984 he was appointed Inspector of Historic Buildings by the D.O.E. to survey West Yorkshire, subsequently becoming the Historic Buildings Officer for West Yorkshire Archive Service. He is the author of 'Wakefield in 50 Buildings' and is currently writing Halifax in 50 Buildings. Peter will take us through a restoration journey via a photographic record.

The Real Coiners Public Workshop

Birchcliffe Centre, 2pm - 3.30pm

The Friends of Heptonstall Museum have been successful in securing the village museum as a community asset. 

Now, we want to know what ideas you have for our first museum exhibition. Opening in 2023, this will be based on 'The Real Coiners', the criminal gang of forgers led by 'King' David Hartley. 

Through the exhibition, we want to place these shadowy figures in their wider social, economic, political and religious contexts. 

We want to consider what life was like for people living in the area at the time, how people made ends meet, and think about what may have made the gang members turn to crime. 

Finally, we hope to consider the legacy of these figures and whether they were, and are, considered heroes or villains? The story of the Coiners is still relevant today and we want to know how you would tell their stories.

We will be holding two open public workshop sessions to consider how best to tell the stories of 'The Real Coiners'. Come and join us and learn more about the plans for the museum. 

You don't need any particular historical knowledge to come along and we hope to welcome a broad range of ages / experiences / views to make sure we reflect the diversity within our community.

Arvon Live Writing Day at Hebden Bridge Town Hall

Arvon's Lumb Bank is running a Live Writing Day with Will Self and Amy Liptrot at Hebden Town Hall on Sunday 28th August.

Is your writing – whether fiction or nonfiction – about places? Are you interested in how to use a certain location in your work? Do you want to push boundaries, both literary and geographical?

Over the course of two Masterclasses delivered live and in-person, Will Self and Amy Liptrot will share some of their own methods of exploring an area – on foot, in words – and give you a chance to try them out. Do places have their own voices? Do they carry memories? How can we as writers tune into and translate them? You will consider what makes successful place writing as well as what makes you an individual.

There will be opportunities to be inspired by the landscape of Hebden Bridge and the Calder Valley as well as places from your own experience and imagination: town or city, island or forest, kitchen or carpark, map or cloud.

Slow the Flow Roadshow 

Together we can slow the flow is a climate action roadshow taking place across Calderdale from 7 July to 20 August to raise awareness about climate change and encourage people living and working in the area to take action to prevent major flooding events. 

The roadshow – the first across the borough – comprises of a travelling exhibition and varied events programme taking place in towns and high flood risk areas urging everyone from school children to businesses to help slow the flow of water and adapt to climate change.

HBDAF Aims to improve access for disabled people in the Hebden Bridge area, and we meet on the 3rd Monday of each month by Zoom video.

We are currently working on our access maps of Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd, and we'd welcome input from local residents.

Can you hear me Mother? – The Art of the Monologue

Todmorden u3a Meeting at the Central Methodist Hall in Todmorden at 1400 on the 21st July with the Talk entitled 'Can you hear me, Mother? – The Art of the Monologue' by David Skillen.

David describes himself as a "consumer of history" and is an engaging, animated and entertaining professional speaker on a variety of historical subjects. 

On the 21st July, he will be talking about the monologue which has formed a part of the dramatic landscape from Shakespeare's Hamlet to Stanley Holloway. In this talk, we will see how the monologue has developed. We will look at its role in 19th Century Politics and see how "stump speeches" evolved into the modern "soundbite" Of course this will feature a performance of a number of monologues and a visit to "A famous seaside place called Blackpool"

Waiting For Wesley is set in the Calder Valley in the summer of 1842 when a wave of strikes engulfed Lancashire and Yorkshire. As well as demanding a reversal of wage cuts, many workers also demanded the government give way on the People's Charter and introduce universal male suffrage.

Supporters of 'physical force' Chartism were numerous in the Halifax area. Hebden Bridge Radical Association declared its belief in "the justice and right of the people to possess arms in their own defence." Thousands of troops confronted strikers, killing five and wounding many more.

In one family, tensions mount as a husband and wife are torn between allegiance to the church and organising the rebellion. There will be a Q and A after the performance and a progress report on the future of Heptonstall Museum.

Co-operatives Work!

Join us on Saturday 2nd July 2022 - UN International Day of Co-operatives - for a multi-event day in Hebden Bridge showcasing the past, present and future of co-operation in Calderdale. The daytime events are all free.

There will be a co-operative history walk around Hebden Bridge in the morning, culminating in the laying of flowers on the graves of local co-operators who helped shape the wider co-op world. This will be followed by a conference in the afternoon at Hebden Bridge Town Hall showcasing the past, present and future of co-operation in Calderdale. 

Calderdale co-operatives (you'd be surprised by how many there are) ranging from the retail, wholesale, hospitality, environmental, care and publishing sectors will give you a flavour of how co-operatives provide sustainable economic and social solutions now and into the future. 

In addition, keynote speakers include Tracy Brabin (West Yorkshire Mayor), Councillor Jane Scullion (Deputy Leader of Calderdale Council), Rose Marley (Chief Executive of Co-operatives UK) and David Burch (Senior Researcher at the Centre for Local Economic Strategies).

The Commoners' Choir at the Trades Club in the evening will round off the day's events.

Helen of Four Gates

with score performed by live string quartet 

Don't miss a rare chance to see Cecil Hepworth's melodrama, Helen of Four Gates (1920), which was filmed on the moors around Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall. A silent film, on the evening of Saturday 25th June, it's being screened at Hebden Bridge Picture House with new live accompaniment scored by Ben Burrows and performed for the first time by the Treske Quartet. 

The film was adapted from a popular novel of the same name by Ethel Carnie Holdsworth and was shot on location on the Pennine moors around Heptonstall and Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, which Carnie Holdsworth had used as the setting for her novel. The film's intertitles were written in the original Yorkshire dialect of the novel.

For over 80 years Helen of Four Gates was believed to be irretrievably lost, until an original 35mm print was discovered in a film vault in Canada in 2007. It's been screened locally only 5 times since the rediscovery of the sole surviving copy of the film. This is the last event in the cinema's centenary year calendar of celebrations.

Introduction by Heptonstall filmmaker Nick Wilding, who was instrumental in finding the surviving copy of the film 15 years ago.

Concert of words and music to welcome in Summer with Cantorelli

At St. Thomas the Apostle Parish Church, Heptonstall (in the old church, weather permitting, or in the new church)

Cantorelli, a vocal octet based in the Calder Valley, is performing a programme of words and music to welcome in summer in the ruins of the old church in Heptonstall (or in the new church if it is wet) in aid of Parish Church funds on Sunday 26th June at 3.30pm. Admission is free.

The programme includes 17th century madrigals from across Europe, songs by Henry Purcell including choruses from the Fairy Queen and 20th century songs by Stanford, Finzi and Vaughan Williams.

Heptonstall: The Far Side

A walk and talk led by John Billingsley for Heptonstall Historical Society. Thursday 23rd June 7pm, meet @ Heptonstall Bowling and Social Club. 

John Billingsley, resident in the valley since 1975, is convenor of the Folklore Section of the Hebden Bridge Local History Society, and has written or edited ten books, mostly on folklore and magical tradition locally and beyond; his most recent is Charming Calderdale (2020), an introduction to magical protections of buildings in the borough. He has also been editor of Northern Earth, the neo-antiquarian journal, for over thirty years.

The evening's walk will take in some of the more unusual and less talked-about aspects of Heptonstall history, as well as more familiar locations. Mostly on paved ground, one short stretch of footpath will take us down to the edge above Hell Hole Rocks. Please wear appropriate footwear. It can be slippery underfoot. It is expected to take around two hours, depending on the progress of the group.

This talk looks at the origins of those New Year resolutions that many of us start with the best of intentions, but do they last. Why do some people worry about Friday the 13th? What is its significance? Why do we send Valentine cards? Who started it all and why is a four-leaf clover supposed to be lucky? All these questions and many more will be answered by Chris and there will also have a few laughs along the way.

Platinum Jubilee at St James' Church

St James' Church (Church Lane, Hebden Bridge HX7 6DS) has organised the following for the local community with thanks to a grant from Hebden Royd Town Council.

2nd to 5th June, anytime between 11 am and 3 pm - Exhibition about Mytholm during the last 70 years, charting the changes in the life of the local community since 1952 and changes during that time in areas such as fashions, toys, games, food, drinks, sweets, weddings, memories. Hebden Royd School will also be marking their postponed 150th anniversary with an exhibition of the history of the school.

5th June between 12 pm and 2 pm - A pot-luck picnic where local people bring their own picnic to eat on their own blanket or chairs either at the church or on the nearby field. For those who may not be able to provide their own picnic, there will be some "Food Share" items available. In the event of wet weather, St John's room at the church will be used. There will be a professionally-made cake in the shape of a 2D Coronation Crown on display until about 1 pm. On arrival at the church, people will be asked to collect a ticket for a free slice of either sponge cake, fruit cake or vegan cake in exchange for their ticket after 1 pm. (100 tickets available).

The colour theme for the Platinum Jubilee is purple, which the church will be using for decorations and flowers, together with the union flag. We encourage you to wear something purple or dress in 1952 fashions. Email for more info

What Have Volcanoes Ever Done for Us?

Chris takes a look at the fascinating subject of volcanoes and the role they've played in the history of the earth. From the very birth of our world, volcanoes have played a major role in shaping not just the landscape, but every life form as well. They may appear to be destructive, but they are also the very cradles of civilisation.

1816 was the Year without a summer, caused by volcanoes and did super volcanoes kill off most of life on earth, or even assist in the demise of the dinosaurs? These and many other volcanic questions will be answered in this exciting talk.

We've partnered with Todmorden Children's Centre, year 10 pupils at Rastrick High School, St Augustine's Centre, Time Out (part of Healthy Minds Calderdale), Calder Community Cares and Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd Walkers Action groups. 

We're really looking forward to sharing the amazing art work with everyone and invite you to visit Hardcastle Crags over the penultimate weekend in April (the last weekend of the school holidays) to see the exhibition, which is being held within and around Gibson Mill (where café is).

Locating Sylvia: Sylvia Plath in a 20th and 21st Century Context

Heptonstall History Society Talk, Tuesday 19th April, 7 pm, Heptonstall Bowling Club. Speaker: Sarah Corbett. 

Sylvia Plath emerged from both an American Literary context, influenced by major poets such as Marianne Moore and Robert Lowell, as well as an English literary tradition reaching back to Chaucer and Shakespeare. At the same time, along with Ted Hughes, Plath is seen as ushering in a new mode of modern poetry in English that continues to influence writers, especially women poets, across the world today. This talk will give an introduction to the range and richness of Plath's writing - her poetry, fiction and letters - and discuss Plath's position within a 20th and 21st Century literary context.

Sarah Corbett has published five collections of poetry, most recently, 'A Perfect Mirror' (Pavilion Poetry/ Liverpool University Press, 2018), and has won two Northern Writer's Awards for fiction. Her work has been shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot and Forward Poetry Prizes and is widely translated and anthologised. She is Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at Lancaster University and will direct the first Sylvia Plath Literary Festival in Hebden Bridge in 2022. She lives in Hebden Bridge.

SNAP! a photowalk and workshop for 4-8 year olds

Hebden Bridge Arts Festival and Hebden Bridge Walkers Action present SNAP!

SNAP! is a Crossings photowalk and workshop for 4-8 year olds.  

For this 2.5 hour event, children will be given an explorer's kit – camera, bag and hat. We'll set off from our base on a short walk to photograph some crossings we find along the way, and to collect nature samples. Back at base, we'll look at our photos and choose our favourites for an exhibition at Hardcastle Crags in April. We'll then experiment with exciting ways of making our nature treasures into beautiful backgrounds for our photos.

Hebden Bridge Arts Festival and Hebden Bridge Walkers Action present Crossing Town: an accessible, 90 minute, guided photo walk, tailored to meet the needs of wheelchair users, families with pushchairs and individuals with limited physical mobility.  This is part of our Crossings project, in which we invite everyone – of all ages, novices and professionals alike, to take part in a giant outdoor photo project for Spring 2022.  

We want you to be part of this exciting project to get out walking, explore the local landscape and take PHOTOS of some of the many accessible crossings you will see along the way. Who Built Hebden Bridge?

Hebden Bridge Town Hall

This exhibition by Hebden Bridge Local History Society looks at the growth of the town but in particular the architects and workers who built it. The shape of the town had been largely decided by the 1920s and that is the focus here. The displays examine the growth of different areas around the centre of the town and some of the problems which that created.

On Saturday 26th March local rhythm and blues band The 844s will give their services for free for this fundraiser. 

The 844s are vocalist and harmonica player Dave Rigg, lead guitarist Martin McGroarty, bassist Jerome Dineen, drummer Jim Duffy, and rhythm guitarist and second vocalist Wally Woodcock. The band plays original compositions with one or two covers, ranging from slow-burn blues to high-energy rock.

We also hope to have a support act.

Food and cask ales will be available, and the band's new CD – "On The Top Floor" - will be available for sale. There will be a raffle, probably an auction of sorts, a collection bucket and all proceeds from the event will go to the D.E.C. Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. We aim to raise £1,000. Please help us do this.

A film about the struggles for justice by the families of people killed by the police in the UK and the need for resistance to state violence.

The silence over the police killings of Black people is now broken. Since 1969, over two thousand people have died at the hands of the police in the UK. Shootings, chokeholds, batons, gassing, suffocation, restraint and brutal beatings are some of the methods used. The numbers of deaths is escalating. Inevitably police officers involved are not convicted for these killings. In this documentary, the families of the victims of police violence demand justice. They ask why society ignores human rights abuses by agents of the state. This reflection on resistance is poignant and political, capturing the brutality and trauma as well as the unrelenting fightback of those who will not be silent about state violence.

Working for Auntie – Behind the Scenes at the BBC

Central Methodist Hall at 2pm

On March 17th, at the Central Methodist Hall in Todmorden, the Todmorden u3a is hosting its first face to face monthly meeting for over 18 months, and the speaker is Christine Green who is sharing her memories about her time at the BBC with a talk entitled, "Working for Auntie – Behind the Scenes at the BBC."

Daughter of graphic design parents, niece of a photographer, painter and printmaker, granddaughter of a wedding photographer and painter, Christine's destiny was set very early on and on graduating from Kingston Polytechnic, Christine's dream became a reality and she joined the BBC Graphic Design Department. Working on programmes such as 'Our Friends in the North, 'Hamish Macbeth', @fire in the Blood' and many more. 

Christine stayed at the BBC for thirteen years after which she left, and turned her hand to crafting in particularly typographic paper cuts and latterly quilting. She now teaches crafting courses, regularly give talks and has her own range of craft merchandise.

Canal and River Trust Open Day

Hebden Bridge Canal and River Trust Open Day is happening on the 12th March 2022 at Lock 9 next to Blackpit Bridge - from 10am until 2pm.

We are carrying out important water saving repairs to this historic lock. The public footbridge provides a perfect viewing platform down into the drained lock, and the our specialists will be on-hand to describe the work taking place and to host some fun family canal-themed activities such as have-a-go canoeing, a heritage walk, a stone masonry workshop, and the Canal and River Trust Explorers (the Trust's educational programme aimed at 5-11 year olds to inspire children's learning by connecting them to our canals and rivers).

Coincide the event with a visit to the town's quirky, independent shops, galleries and cafes for a great family day out.

Blackshirts and Anti-Blackshirts in 1930s Manchester

A zoom talk for Heptonstall Historical Society, March 8th 7 pm. Speaker: Michael Crowley

The British Union of Fascists attempts to win support in Manchester and the resistance they met from the Jewish community of Cheetham. In 1934 British Union Fascists leader Oswald Mosley opened a BUF headquarters in Cheetham, the Jewish quarter of Manchester. Soon Blackshirts began marching through the area intimidating and attacking local people and daubing synagogues with swastikas. Above a workshop on Herbert St, the Challenge Club was established. A place for Sunday dances, film shows, meetings and self-defence classes. From there the defence of the community was organised and much more besides.

A Notable Epidemic: the 1880-81 Scarlet Fever outbreak in Halifax

John Brooke

More than five hundred people were affected by this outbreak of scarlet fever and over a hundred people died. This was no ordinary epidemic and John will explore how a farmer, a hired man and a local milk round were all involved.

John Brooke was a headteacher for 25 years and a part-time school inspector for a further seven. Most recently he has lectured for the WEA and has a number of publications to his name, including Cruel Lives: a history of some West Yorkshire epidemics. He lives in Lightcliffe where he is secretary of the local history society, president of the cricket club and leader of a litter-picking group!

The History of St Thomas the Apostle Church, Heptonstal

Heptonstall History Society Talk 

Speaker: Graham Kidd 

7 pm @ St Thomas the Apostle Church, Heptonstall. Free to HS members; £4 to non-members. 

In 1847 a violent storm blew down part of the church tower of St Thomas a Becket Church in Heptonstall; a building that had stood since the 13th century.  The people of Heptonstall decided to raise money for a new church and two gifts of land were made by Richard Sutcliffe of Lumb Bank and William Cockcroft of Mayroyd.

In 1850 the foundations were laid. Almost all the stone used for the building was quarried nearby at Hell Hole Rocks. Four years later, the completed church was consecrated...

When asked if her talk was based on any of her books Linda said, "No, it's not based on any of my books. It's a combination really - things from the internet, my own observations, tales people have told me and a great variety of comments on ageing looking at its funny side. It's bound to get everyone laughing; a change from the doom and gloom that is the news!"

MANAGING SPACE, MANAGING PEOPLE: Constables and highways in seventeenth century Sowerby

The chance survival of Sowerby’s book of constables’ accounts for this period – the best from any part of Yorkshire – opens a window onto a formative stage in the way townships managed social welfare, access and mobility. The crisis years from the 1630s to the 1660s saw social and governance changes, including a precocious use of taxation for highways. The legacy was a network of tracks and causeys connecting the parish to a wider world.

Murray has lived in the area for 36 years, and is on the home stretch (he hopes) of a PhD at Lancaster University, researching manorial and township governance of highways in the parish of Halifax, c.1550-1700. Before retirement, he worked in the community-based transport sector. Given half a chance, he’d rather be out walking or reading very long books.

CINEMA IN HEBDEN BRIDGE: A HISTORY

The history of cinema in Hebden Bridge spans over 120 years, and takes us from silent flickering images projected onto the walls of travelling theatre tents to the sharp digital images we enjoy today in the Picture House. Kate will discuss the old Royal Electric Theatre, and the local people who have played their part in the story too.

Kate lives locally, loves going to the cinema, and has enjoyed being on the committee of the Friends of the Picture House for the last 10 years. Along with her father, she has also written a book about the history of cinema in Hebden Bridge - Hebden Bridge Picture House, the Life and Times of a Local Treasure.

The Lost Chord Ensemble

7.00-9.30pm in the Little Theatre bar, Holme Street, Hebden Bridge.

The Lost Chord Ensemble meets about once a month and supports the Little Theatre.

Musicians (with their music stand) are invited to come and play some light music selections. If you are coming for the first time, please contact chris.browne@tiscali.co.uk with details of your instrument so that a pad of music can be made available.

Chris, who conducts the local Little Theatre Choir, has a wealth of light music including some of his own compositions.

The Wonderful World of Art Deco by Sheila Antrobus

The Todmorden u3a welcomes Sheila Antrobus, a well-known speaker and expert in antiques & collectables, to give her wonderfully illustrated talk on the Art Deco Era by Zoom on Thursday 20th January at 1400.

Sheila looks at the design style that influenced everything from architecture, transportation, fashion and household goods. After the First World War people's spirits needed uplift and the art deco movement did just that. Sheila's talk covers every aspect of the art deco period and states that the art deco period danced to a jazz rhythm.
