Happy Valley Pride hosts Anne Lister event as Series Two of Gentleman Jack launches
Tuesday, 5 April 2022
For the closing event of the Anne Lister Birthday Festival 2022, Happy Valley Pride is proud to welcome Dr Jill Liddington whose research into the diaries of Anne Lister inspired the BBC1/HBO series Gentleman Jack. Series two of the hit series starts the same day.
Sunday 10 April, 2 to 3.30pm, Hebden Bridge Little Theatre – £5
In this talk, Dr Liddington explores precisely how Anne Lister has been presented by different generations of editors and historians. She traces this story through the lens of LGBT history, from 1840 when Anne Lister died, right up to Gentleman Jack in 2019.
In 1990 Dr Liddington, living in Halifax just a mile from Shibden Hall, began work on the 1830s diaries. First published in 1998, Female Fortune: the Anne Lister diaries 1833-36 is the book that inspired Sally Wainwright to create Gentleman Jack. The new edition from Manchester University Press includes an Afterword on the recent discovery of an Ann Walker diary
Tim Whitehead, Happy Valley Pride Artistic Director said: "Happy Valley Pride is delighted to welcome Dr Liddington to look at the fascinating life and legacy of Anne Lister. This is the perfect way to close the Anne Lister Birthday Celebrations 2022 and to get ready for the brand-new series starting the same day. Anne is an inspirational figure who has captured the imagination of people across the world."
