Wainsgate Concert with Reason Breeds Monsters
Tuesday, 6 May 2014
The 2014 summer concert series at Wainsgate Chapel starts in May with three gigs in quick succession and - true to Wainsgate's policy of putting on the widest possible variety of music and spoken word events - they could hardly be more different from each other!
Sunday May 11th sees irreverent York-based "agit-swingers" Reason Breeds Monsters mixing up some fiercely inventive music with their particular breed of radical politics. This is followed on Sunday 18th by the highly acclaimed jazz pianist Greg Spero (Chicago's jazz entertainer of the year in 2013) who brings his outstanding Quartet to the Chapel, then on Thursday May 29 The Outside Track return to the scene of their superb concerts of 2009 and 2011 when they brought the house down with their unique blend of Irish, Scottish and Nova Scotian acoustic music.
The 6 members of Reason Breeds Monsters draw on musical influences from all around the world to create lively songs of social comment and political activism that cut a swathe through such matters as casual racism, austerity and the spiritual desert in the south of England. These are also tunes that make you want to dance to as a great bass and drums rhythm section provides the foot tapping foundation for some awesome Bert Jansch-style guitar playing, whilst a frenetic gypsy violin trades licks with jazz clarinet and trumpet.
"I think that Reason Breeds Monsters will provide the perfect punchy and eclectic start to our season", said concert organiser Dave Nelson. "We're following that with some of the highest quality jazz to be found anywhere in the world, and then with some folk music of a similar calibre. With a spectacular Baroque/Early Music concert planned for June and some great ideas for the remainder of the season, 2014 should be an unforgettable year for our audiences".
Concerts at Wainsgate normally start at 3pm, although The Outside Track's gig on Thursday May 29 is an evening concert starting at 7.30pm.
Tickets are £8 and £6 and are only available at the door. Wainsgate Chapel is on Wainsgate Lane, Old Town, Hebden Bridge HX7 8SU. Parking there is limited and reserved for disabled drivers.
There are plenty of footpaths for those who'd like to walk from Hebden Bridge or there's an hourly bus service to Old Town Mill Lane (opposite Wainsgate Lane) where parking is also available. More details of all events can be found at www.wainsgate.co.uk.
