Heritage Open Day: Hebden Bridge Town Hall's Fire Station
On Saturday September 8th members of the public will be able to see for themselves a heritage fire tender unit which would have been typical of its type when the Hebden Bridge fire station opened as an extension to the Town Hall in 1898.
Before the advent of the combustion engine, burning buildings were often attended to by a local fire service using a horse drawn fire tender. The fire tender unit is being hired especially for the day from the Fire and Police Museum and will be on display outside the Town Hall on the Market Place car park from 10.00am until 4.00pm.
The event will also act as a public consultation opportunity that will contribute towards a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund from the Hebden Bridge Community Association. If the bid is successful there will be some important restoration to the old Town Hall building to reflect the pride which those who were responsible for its construction, had in their town. It will also see a range of heritage based community engagement activities that will bring new understanding and insight into the history of the Town Hall and of its key role in the developing story of local democracy.
Images displayed on Saturday which highlight some of the possible key heritage themes have been kindly donated by Pennine Horizons Digital Archive, as well as by Calderdale Council Museums, both of which will play key roles in partnership working for the project.
Chris Mackins, Project Development Officer confirms that "it's important to us as an organisation that we consult with members of the community so that we can gauge opinion and shape the project. On Saturday, we'd love to use this opportunity to talk with the public about the development of heritage project"
Hebden Bridge Community Association have timed the event to coincide with the national Heritage Open Days weekend, aimed at encouraging the public to explore the heritage within their communities.
Chris can be reached at the Town Hall, by telephoning 01422 845261 or by email
