Local people who have been watching the progress on the construction site at the rear of Hebden Bridge's Town Hall will have a chance to find out more this Saturday (July 2nd). The trustees of Hebden Bridge Community Association which manages the Town Hall are holding a short session at 12 noon inside the Town Hall, when they will be explaining the progress so far and the next stages in the building work.

When complete, the extension to the Town Hall will offer a new public hall and function room, new meeting rooms of different sizes, exhibition space, a riverside balcony and courtyard and enterprise units for new start-ups and developing businesses. The work will also enable the first floor Council Chamber and existing offices of the Town and Parish Councils to be fully accessible to those with mobility difficulties.

"The new building should be ready next Spring, and so far the contractors are exactly on target," says the Association's chair Peter Hirst. The Association is already beginning to plan an opening week of activities for the new building, which are scheduled to take place in the second week of May. Bookings by organisations and individuals wanting to use the new Waterfront Hall and meeting rooms will open shortly.

The Association has also given an update on the progress in its appeal to ensure that the new riverside courtyard can be paved with genuine York stone rather than substitute paving. Currently £4,600 in donations towards the total £18,200 cost of paving the courtyard have been received. Sponsors are being invited to 'buy' their own square metre of stone for £100, or to gift a square metre on behalf of a child or grandchild.

"Taking into account the Gift Aid tax refund on these donations, we now have approaching 60 square metres of York stone paving paid for. We're about a third of the way there," says Peter Hirst.

The main construction work on the new Town Hall extension has been funded partly from support from the Communitybuilders fund and partly by the European Union for the region's economic development, through the Yorkshire and Humber European Regional Development Fund programme 2007-13. The ERDF programme provides investment support to help regions improve their economies and help local businesses, people and communities to improve their prospects.
