THINGS TO SEE AND DO AROUND HEBDEN BRIDGE
Countryside
The Pennine hills and valleys around Hebden Bridge (including Stoodley Pike, left) have long been popular with visitors, acting as a green lung for the inhabitants of nearby towns and cities. Walking is a popular activity, whether just strolling along a riverside path, or following the stone causeways (causeys
) that mark old packhorse routes.
Britain's first National Trail, the Pennine Way, passes close by, while the Calderdale Way, a 50-mile (80 km) circular route around the Calder Valley, skirts the town. A growing network of bridleways are making excellent mountain-biking and horse-riding routes, including the newly-opened Mary Towneley Loop part of the Pennine Bridleway.
Heritage
Hebden Bridge, Heptonstall and the surrounding area tell the fascinating story of textiles from the middle ages; from rich clothiers' houses to hand-loom weavers' cottages; from remote and picturesque sites of early mills to the revolution in transport; from the co-operative movement to "double-decker" housing. Cragg Vale and Mytholmroyd
Coiners’ Country

coin counterfeiters, this delightful valley offers good walking in tranquil surroundings.
Mytholmroyd is the birthplace of the Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes (1930-98).
Hardcastle Crags
Hardcastle Crags - Britain's "Little Switzerland", this beautiful wooded valley is owned by The National Trust. Guided walks and other activities throughout the year. [01422 - 844518].
Heptonstall
Heptonstall is an outstanding example of a Pennine hill village above Hebden Bridge. Visit the Grammar School Museum, the Methodist Octagonal Chapel, the old Priory, the "new" church, and the grave of Sylvia Plath.
