CARNIVAL WEEKEND IN HEBDEN

The Arts Festival opened on Saturday with a superb day of dance on the imove stage, rigged up in Lees Yard for the day.

Crowds gathered to watch Belfast troupe Ponydance pirouetting with prams and shimmying up poles, So & So circus somersaulting and lindy hopping and Sheffield breakdancers Rationale spinning on their heads whilst Lindy Nsingo performed her moody autobiographical piece ‘Self’ to a mesmerised crowd.

Inside the new Town Hall the WI were surprised by Jordan Massarella’s ‘Visitors’ popping up unannounced and there were more surprises in store at the Trades Club when Ponydance popped up for an impromptu performance mid gig!

Families crowded into the studio at the Town Hall to watch Brighton performer Chris TT set the songs of AA Milne to music whilst others wound their way up to Heptonstall to the Octagonal chapel to see 70s folk legend perform to a packed house from John Wesley’s stage. The Festival has a limited number of signed Julie Felix posters available. Interested parties should bring their sealed bids complete with name and contact number into the box office by 5pm Sunday 8 July. All proceeds to the Flood Fund.

The hilarious Granny Turismo speeded into town on Sunday on their motorised shopping trollies attracting a packed crowd in St George’s square. Dance fans enjoyed a scratch night curated by DankDance in the brand new Waterfront Hall whilst Chris TT performed an acoustic set upstairs.

‘The weekend kicked off with the superb Handmade Parade and the party continued right across town, with the Town Hall right at the heart of it all. There was a genuine carnival feel about the place. Weather and recent events notwithstanding, it felt like the town had come together to celebrate.’

Hot tickets for the rest of the festival: catch sharp contemporary drama, Razing Eddie pre-Edinburgh, Miss Havisham in all her embittered glory, a feast of international poetry and a Girls Allowed, the festival within a festival, an afternoon of singer/songwriters at Wainsgate Chapel.
