Buried treasures in Town Hall Time Capsule
Time Capsule being buried
There are buried treasures now hidden away underneath the construction site where Hebden Bridge's new Town Hall extension is taking shape. A time capsule, carrying contributions from children at Riverside School in Hebden Bridge reflecting life in 2011, was buried last Friday under what will eventually become the Town Hall's riverside courtyard.
The actual burial of the time capsule was undertaken by the oldest and youngest members of Riverside School's School Council, Sam Edmondson (11) and Arley Hewitt (7), assisted by Brian Fletcher for the contractors Strategic Team Group. Other members of the School Council, representing two elected children from each year class, watched from the balcony at the rear of the Town Hall.
Contributions for the time capsule came from many children at the school, and included messages, drawings, photographs, coins and a small wire sculpture.

Andrew Bibby, trustee of Hebden Bridge Community Association, said: "Children from Riverside shared their ideas for the future of the Town Hall at a workshop with our architects back in 2009, when we were first beginning to discuss the Town Hall extension. We were delighted to be able to welcome them back, and show them the building which is actually now taking shape."
Val Eggleton, head of Riverside School, said: "We've been very pleased to work with the Community Association on the time capsule. Our children have worked very hard to choose appropriate things to put in it, and it's great to think that their contributions will be there under the Town Hall, to be rediscovered some time in the future."
The time capsule itself is a stout metal box, worthy of the best Treasure Island story, which has been specially made and donated by local Hebden Bridge business Halifax Wireform.
A second local school, Hebden Royd, have also been assembling material for a time capsule, and this will be buried in a different part of the Town Hall site later in November.
The Association have also announced that a public Hard Hat tour of the site will be taking place on Saturday December 3rd with twenty-minute tours commencing at 10am and with the last tour at twelve noon. Places are limited, and may be booked by calling into the Town Hall between 10am and 2.30pm or phoning HB 845261.
The construction work on the new Town Hall extension has been funded partly from support from the European Union for the region's economic development, through the Yorkshire and Humber European Regional Development Fund programme 2007-13. The programme provides investment support to help regions improve their economies and help local businesses, people and communities to improve their prospects.
