Walshaw Windfarm Community Assembly
Sunday, November 17, 2024.
11 am - 3 pm
Hebden Bridge Town Hall
We are facing a climate emergency and must rapidly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Wind energy is a proven source of clean energy, essential for lowering carbon emissions and fostering a sustainable future.
However, the Walshaw Windfarm proposal is controversial, particularly due to its potential impact on the internationally protected and environmentally sensitive moorland, which is home to endangered bird species and fragile peatlands. Critics argue that the development could also increase flood risks in the local area.
It is no surprise, then, that the proposal for a large-scale wind farm at Walshaw Moor has polarised opinions. There is an urgent need for better, clearer, and more accurate information to address the concerns surrounding the project. We hope that the Walshaw Windfarm Community Assembly will serve as a vital platform for open dialogue, enabling constructive discussions and fostering a deeper understanding of the implications of the proposed development.
Walshaw Windfarm Community Assembly
The Walshaw Windfarm Community Assembly has been organised to help attendees explore the potential benefits and environmental impacts of the proposed Walshaw Windfarm.
Carefully selected expert speakers will offer clear, balanced, and thorough overviews on the following topics:
- The planning process
- Energy and climate impacts
- Peatlands and flood risks
- Biodiversity
- Landscape, leisure, and cultural heritage
Attendees will then be invited to engage in facilitated small group discussions to explore the points raised. The intention is to foster open and respectful dialogue, enabling participants to articulate their own viewpoints more clearly while gaining greater insight into perspectives different from their own.
Local resident and retired mental health advocate, Phil Lockyear, has this to say of a previous Community Assembly that took place in Todmorden in September: "The whole experience was thought provoking. It was extremely helpful to be able to explore the issues in a non-partisan environment".
One of the event organisers, Rachel Lightbird added, "This will be a facilitated environment where all points of view can be expressed and listened to. We hope that our expert speakers will offer nuanced insights to enhance understanding, while also giving attendees the opportunity to share what is on their hearts and minds and also listen to and learn from others."
Event Structure
- Presentations and Q&A: Experts will present on the key topics, with opportunities for in-depth discussions during the event.
- Group Discussions: Attendees will join small groups to discuss the issues with the assistance of facilitators.
- Group Sharing: Each group will share their key takeaways with the full assembly.
