Calderdale Council by-election: Calder Ward
Updated: Tuesday 1 October 2024
There is to be by-election for the Calderdale Council seat vacated by Josh Fenton-Glynn who became Calder Valley MP in July. It is for the Calder Ward which covers the Hebden Bridge area.
Nominations opened on Friday 20 September and closed at 4pm on the 27 September. The election will be held on the 24 October.
The candidates are as follows:
- Scott Borrows - Independent
- Brian Carter - Conservative
- Jim McNeill - Social Democratic Party
- Jonathan Timbers - Labour
- Kieran Turner - Green Party
- Chris Wadsworth - Liberal Democrats
Former mayor of Hebden Royd, Jonathan Timbers has told the HebWeb: "Many of you will know me from my years on the Town Council.
"I'll keep working hard for the ward and build on Labour's achievements such as supporting pioneering green flood alleviation scheme 'Slow the Flow' and campaigning to restore the 590 bus route. There's lots to do and so many residents with great ideas about how to make things better. I want to work with you to rebuild after 14 years of first Tory/ Lib Dem and then Tory austerity and mismanagement."
Calderdale Liberal Democrats have told the HebWeb that they have selected Chris Wadsworth to contest vacancy.
Chris who is chair of the Upper Valley Lib Dem's says "This by-election offers the real chance to change Labours stranglehold on the local political scene. Labour control Calderdale and both Todmorden and Hebden Royd Town Councils and seem hellbent on pushing through poorly thought through schemes against local wishes e.g cycle lanes and parking restrictions to name a couple".
Jim McNeill, the Social Democratic Party candidate, is a cybersecurity professional who has worked at John Holdsworths, Provident Insurance, Together Housing and Jephsons. He has told the HebWeb that the SDP will work locally on local issues, for small businesses and farmers and the infrastructure that supports us all. They will roll back anti-car policies, keep recycling facilities open and make sure everyone can stay warm through winter.
The HebWeb will update this page as and when we hear from other candidates.
