Pat Douthwaite: Alive and Kicking
Wednesday 24 July 2024
Pat Douthwaite: Alive and Kicking is a one-woman theatre piece by Anna Carlisle with Alexandra Mathie in the title role.
This new theatre piece from Heroica Theatre Company sets out to unravel the knotty bond between the somewhat reckless private life of painter Pat Douthwaite (1934-2002) and her dramatic and often confrontational art works.
An artist of extraordinary and unique vision, she screamed out an uncompromising take on the human condition in works that were nothing short of genius. The art-loving public was by no means ready for such an aggressive and unbridled style as Douthwaite's, however, and - tragically - she saw scant proper recognition in her lifetime.
The production, integrating dialogues, images and music, will honour Pat Douthwaite - in the year of what would have been her ninetieth birthday - with the appreciation and understanding she so richly deserves. The play will pull no punches, so get ready for an astounding performance - that will certainly get you talking.

Heroica Theatre Company (formerly Square Peg Productions, founded 2005) champions the achievements of maverick women.
The experience of a Heroica production is unique. Each play event illuminates the life of a secret heroine, celebrating a woman of great achievement, often a maverick and usually unsung. It also reimagines the relationships between history and the present day, and between a story and the place in which an audience watches it unfold.
