Meadows Day at High Hirst Woodmeadow

Hebden Royd Town Council (HRTC) is pleased to announce a diverse line-up of free nature and conservation-based community events, celebrating National Meadows Day on Saturday, 6 July, 2024.
This family-friendly nature fun day is taking place on HRTC-managed ancient grassland, and local wildlife site, High Hirst Woodmeadow

Butterflies of the Night (moth breakfast).
8.30am-9.30am. Facilitated by Halifax Scientific Society (HSS) experts Andrew Cockroft and Charlie Streets
Join us for a moth-themed breakfast with the Halifax Scientific Society. (Waiting list only).
Let's Put up Some Bird and Bat Boxes!
10am-11am. Led by Halifax Scientific Society expert Andrew Cockroft
Explore our meadows, learn about the birds that call them home, and provide birds and bats with new homes, by helping us put up bird and bat boxes. Spaces limited to 10.
Scything Demonstration
11am-11.30am. Friends of High Hirst Woodmeadow
Watch Friends of High Hirst members demonstrate this ancient, beautiful and restorative meadow management skill. Drop in. No booking required.
The Butterflies of Calderdale Valley
12.45 pm-11.45 pm. Led by Halifax Scientific Society expert Andrew Cockroft.
Join us for a wonderful opportunity to explore the fascinating world of Calderdale's butterflies, day moths, and other intriguing insects. Accompanied children, welcome!
Ecology Walks
11.30am-12.30pm and 1pm-2pm. Led by Steve Hindle
Join Steve Hindle our local expert ecologist, walking through High Hirst Woodmeadow to gain invaluable insights into the unique flora and fungi that inhabit this ancient grassland.
Children's Nature-Based Activities
10am-11am & 11am-12 noon. Led by Dodnaze Community Association Forest School.
Four Free nature-based kid's sessions including pond-dipping, flower crown making, pinch-pot making, hapa zome, making dragon flies out of sycamore
Additional Information
Accessible toilet facilities will be available at nearby Dodnaze Community Centre from 10am-1pm.
We kindly ask that guests wear sturdy footwear and dress appropriately for the weather, as the events will take place outdoors.
Limited parking for guests with limited mobility is available on Manor Drive, Dodnaze, while all other attendees are welcome to use the nearby Hebden Bridge IOU hostel/Birchcliffe Centre car park, located just five minutes away on foot.
