Unite Community Day of Action on Fuel Poverty

The Community section of Trade Union, Unite, is campaigning against Fuel Poverty. Throughout the country the first two days of December were days of action bringing activists onto the streets.
The local Halifax and Calder Valley branch were out leafleting and collecting signatures in Halifax this week with a petition demanding that Rishi Sunak thinks about ordinary people heating their homes this winter instead of increasing the profits made by energy suppliers.
They talked to passers-by, and heard harrowing stories of people forced to sit in unheated homes, wrapped in blankets and cuddling hot water bottles.
One man was afraid to look at his meter because of how much it was costing him. Two pensioners were unable to buy Christmas presents for their family this year. A Mum was afraid her daughter would go without on her birthday.
"We are paying extortionate prices to heat our homes while energy companies laugh their way to the bank," said Nigel Smith. "In 2021 the Big Four energy generation companies made £"9.5 billion while millions of people struggled to stay warm.
"Unite is determined to make fuel poverty a thing of the past supporting a Green Industrial Revolution and the taxing of fatcat profits."
