Free Community Events Celebrating National Meadows Day
Hebden Royd Town Council (HRTC) is excited to announce a vibrant line-up of free community events, celebrating National Meadows Day, on Saturday, July 1, 2023.
Set amidst the breath-taking beauty of the ancient grassland, High Hirst Woodmeadow, the programme features a range of activities catering to diverse interests and age groups. Please see below for more information and details on how to book your place.
Butterflies of the Night, A Moth Breakfast in Calderdale Valley.
8am-9am. Facilitated by Richard Rainbow and Friends

Minibeast Meadow Safari – A Family Ecoventure in Nature
10am-11am. Led by Rachel Lightbird
Explore safari style, using our nets and pots to catch and learn about a fascinating range minibeasts. Book your place here
Help Dave Build a Dry Stone Wall
9.30am-10.30am & 1pm-2pm, or drop in for as long as you want. Led by Dave Glover.
You'll be instructed in techniques and principles of dry-stone walling. You can then spend as much or as little time throughout the day helping restore the beautiful High Hirst Woodmeadow dry stone wall. Book your place using the links below

Ecology Walks
11.15am-12.30pm and 2pm-3.15pm. Led by Steve Hindle
Join Steve Hindle our local expert ecologist, walking through High Hirst Woodmeadow to gain invaluable insights into the unique flora and fungi that inhabit this ancient grassland.

Drop-in Family Activities
In addition to the above events, we are pleased to offer two fun family drop-in activities.
Splendid Sphagnum: A Magnificent Moss Adventure
12 noon-3pm. Dodnaze Allotments. Led by Gill Wrigley
Pop in any time to appreciate the utility AND beauty of sphagnum moss in a relaxed and informal setting. You will have the opportunity to examine the moss up close try your hand at moss propagation and learn how sphagnum moss and the habitats it creates have been almost eradicated from the South Pennines and what is being done to reverse this. Accompanied children welcome.
Fluttercraft: Crafting Butterflies Family Workshop
11am-2pm. Dodnaze Community centre. Led by local artist, Sue Walpole
Drop into this delightful craft workshop suitable for children and adults of all ages.
Additional Information
Free refreshments for all will be available at nearby Dodnaze Community Centre from 11am-3pm.
We kindly ask that guests wear sturdy footwear and dress appropriately for the weather, as the events will take place outdoors.
Limited parking for guests with limited mobility is available on Manor Drive, Dodnaze, while all other attendees are welcome to use the nearby Hebden Bridge IOU hostel/Birchcliffe Centre car park, located just five minutes away on foot.
