Charlestown Open Gardens

Tuesday, 23 May 2023

Six Charlestown gardens will be open to visitors on Sunday, June 11 – a début event for this tucked-away area of Hebden Bridge.

The gardens include wildlife-friendly cottage beds, vegetable plots, woodlands and terraced rockeries. Entry will be free, with the option to make a donation to each gardener's chosen charity.

There'll be refreshments at each stop and plenty of chance to sit and admire the views of Knott Wood and on to Stoodley Pike.

Because the roads are tight and steep and there's no parking, visitors do need to come on foot. Starting at the first garden on Oakville Road and ending at Lower Rawtonstall, the walk is a 3km round-trip, along tracks and footpaths winding up through the woods.

"We've all loved the variety and the friendliness of Midgley's Open Garden event, and we wanted to share that same experience here in Charlestown," said co-organiser Rebecca Dearden. "We hope visitors will get some inspiration for their own gardens, whatever the size, and leave us with ideas for our gardens too. After all, a garden is always a work-in-progress!"

It's hoped that even more home gardeners and allotment-holders will take part next year.

The gardens are open from 1pm to 5pm, apart from Lower Rawtonstall, which will close at 4. You can find out more on this web page
