Ukraine: Artists In Exile
Friday, 4 November 2022
Thanks to the generosity of various local people, there are now quite few Ukrainians being hosted in our area.
In April, the HebWeb posted a piece about Artists in Exile, which is a small not-for-profit group supporting Ukrainian artists to come to the UK through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, to find creative communities and work opportunities.
So far they have helped nearly 60 Ukrainian artists and their families to come to the UK, some living around here, and they are now really struggling for sponsors.
They are seeing a new wave of people desperate to leave Ukraine, due to recent attacks and fears about what the winter will bring.
They ask sponsors to host for a minimum of 6 months and they support everyone through the entire process. They would love to hear from anyone who might be able to help - even just to talk it through. Can you help? Drop them an email: artinexile2022@gmail.com.
Artists In Exile offers creative UK residencies to Ukrainian artists. They help with travel, accommodation and living costs. Accommodation is provided for a minimum of 6 months.
Every one of these opportunities is bespoke. Artists in Exile find out individual needs before making specific arrangements. If artists have children or other immediate family members, they can come too. They have good safeguarding procedures and use enhanced DBS checks where needed.
As part of the project, they also plan opportunities for Ukrainian artists to create and present work together, to communicate thoughts and responses to UK audiences and beyond.
While they are currently offering this opportunity to Ukrainian nationals, they hope to extend it to all artists who find themselves unable to stay in their own country.
