Canal Overflow - Planning Application
Tuesday, 12 July 2022
Work is about to start at the Vale Centre site on Stubbing Holme Road, which will facilitate the delivery of a canal flood overflow weir.
The purpose of the overflow weir will be to reduce flooding to canal front properties upstream of the aqueduct in the centre of Hebden Bridge by discharging excess water into the River Calder.
During significant storm/ flood events, the additional water flowing into the Rochdale Canal exceeds the capacity of its available overflows. As a result, flooding occurs at low spots along the canal which affects canal front properties upstream of the aqueduct over the River Calder.
Work at the Vale Centre has involved installing sheet piles into the riverbed to support a reinforced concrete foundation. A wall has then been constructed on the foundation.
Planning application
The planning application has now been submitted for the canal overflow weir, which will be located adjacent to the former Adult Learning Centre site between Stubbing Holme Road and Hebble End. The planning application can be found on Calderdale Council's planning portal by searching ref: 22/00706/FUL.
