Council Gives Go Ahead for Climate Emergency Action Plan

Thursday, 22 October 2020

The Climate Emergency Action Plan, submitted by Hebden Royd Town Council Climate Emergency Committee, was approved by Full Council on Wednesday 14th October 2020 and is set to be reviewed and developed year on year, detailing all the ways in which the council will contribute to tackling climate change in Hebden Royd.

The approval of the plan marks significant progress in the council's vision to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Councillor Nikki Harvey, Chair of the Climate Emergency Committee said, "I took over from Cllr Scott Patient as Chair of Climate Emergency in recent months and am grateful for all the work he has done as Chair. Since then we have been busy writing an Action Plan to guide our work in these challenging times. The plan has now been agreed by full council and we are excited about working to try and achieve as much of it as we can."

Cllr Nikki Harvey added, "Our aim is to effect change to reduce carbon emissions directly where we can and indirectly by working with or lobbying others to make necessary changes where we can't.

HRTC Climate Emergency Committee acknowledges the impact of flooding in the area caused by climate change. We seek to work effectively to minimise the impact of climate change both within Hebden Royd and the wider world."

The action plan sets out three of key themes including:

  • to work with partners to reduce carbon emissions in Hebden Royd
  • to promote awareness of climate emergency and support residents in lowering their own carbon emissions and making green choices
  • to engage with young people in supporting opportunities for engagement with the natural world and climate change awareness.

Cllr Nikki Harvey continues, "Please have a look through the action plan and let us know what you think. If you have any further ideas or are in a community group and would like to get involved, please contact us too."
