Eastwood Household Waste Recycling Centre to reopen
Wednesday, 20 May 2020
Eastwood Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) will reopen from Friday 22 May, with strict safety measures in place to protect both staff and visitors.
The opening of the Eastwood site follows a successful trial reopening at Halifax and Brighouse HWRCs, which have been open since Monday 11 May.
From Friday 22 May, the three sites will also accept wood and metal as well as general, non-electrical bulky and garden waste. Residents are reminded not to bring any other type of waste to the sites, as there will not be skips available.
Additional traffic management will be in place at Eastwood due to its location on a main road. For safety reasons the entrance to the HWRC will be via left turn only. There will be no right turn as queuing traffic from the Todmorden direction will be dangerous for other road users.
Residents are asked to approach from the Hebden Bridge direction. Those travelling from Todmorden are advised to go past the HWRC for approximately five minutes and use the turning circle on A646 Halifax Road to enable an approach from this direction.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, Cllr Susan Press, said, “Following the reopening of Household Waste Recycling Centres at Brighouse and Halifax, sites have been busy with an average queuing time of around an hour.
“Using our experiences in opening these sites as a guide, we’re now able to also reopen Eastwood Household Waste Recycling Centre. The position of this site provides some challenges and the same, strict traffic management will be in place to help manage the queues and limit the disruption on nearby roads.
“Generally people have been understanding and have cooperated with the restrictions. Please remember they are in place for both the safety of site users and staff and we won’t hesitate to turn people away or ask them to leave the site if these rules aren’t followed.”
Please continue to only use the Household Waste Recycling Centres if it is essential and the waste cannot be safely stored. Queues are expected and traffic management will be in place.
Opening times
The three sites will open Monday to Friday 8am - 4.30pm, Saturday 8am - 3.30pm, Sunday 9am - 3.30pm (early closure to allow time for thorough cleaning). There may be short closure periods throughout the day for cleaning or skip exchanges. At busy times and close to closing time, cars may be turned away.
Before attending the HWRC, residents are asked to read the full guidelines on site safety.
The Council’s other HWRCs at Elland and Sowerby Bridge will remain closed for the time being. There are difficulties in safely opening these sites due to their layouts potentially causing issues with social distancing, as well as likely traffic management concerns.
Do not attend the HWRC if you are self-isolating or are having COVID-19 symptoms. If anyone in your household has had COVID-19 symptoms, then the waste should be double bagged and stored for 72 hours before being brought to site.
