The Future of the Birchcliffe Centre

Pennine Heritage is to open a public consultation on the future of the Birchcliffe Centre.
Following on from the award in February of a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Resilient Heritage Programme, Pennine Heritage has opened a series of consultation events to invite the local community to become involved in planning the Centre’s future use.
The Birchcliffe Centre and Hostel is based in Hebden Bridge and works to promote and conserve the heritage of the Upper Calder Valley and the wider South Pennines. This includes a major historical photographic archive of over 40,000 images dating back to the mid-19th century, including the locally renowned Alice Longstaff Collection.
There will be an Open Day at the Birchcliffe Centre in Hebden Bridge on 21st September, when members of the public can come along to find out more and view potential building plans. An online survey will be open until 4th October and 3 respondents will be drawn at random to win a mounted print of their choice from the Alice Longstaff Collection. Postcards distributed around Hebden Bridge and posted to local residents will give people without internet access a chance to take part too.
Commenting on the consultation process the Chair of Pennine Heritage, Judith Schofield, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players we’re able to involve the community in planning the Centre’s future and we’d like to get as many people as we can to contribute their views. We’ve already interviewed over 100 people and we hope the online survey, postcards and Open Day will give the whole community a chance to get involved. We want to make sure that the Centre’s future meets the community’s needs so tell us what you think!”
