Street Sunday spectacular is back
Some of the country’s best street performers are heading to Hebden Bridge to perform as part of the Street Sunday Spectacular. Street Sunday on Sunday 23 June is programmed by Hebden Bridge Arts Festival as the crazy crew join the cream of local talent on impromptu stages across the town showing off their skills to thousands of people for free
Local comedian Mike Hancock is the day’s Master of Ceremonies trying to keep a lid on the chaos and introducing top class performers like acrobatic troupe Black Eagles, from Tanzania, who perform their daring routines to lively African music.
Circo Rum Ba Ba Bicyle Bistro are two eccentric moustachioed waiters arriving in style on their bistro on wheels. They lay the table, wind up the gramophone and unleash a choreographed 40 minutes of cafe circus mayhem.
Manic idiot violinist Sid Bowfin makes a triumphant return to Street Sunday after running riot on his last appearance in St George’s Square. This unlikely virtuoso combines madcap comedy with superb musicianship, and he’ll be joined on the square by Dimitri who will be balloon modelling, stilt walking and even some juggling.
Down at the Marina hotly tipped young local singer Isaac Hughes Dennis is MC. He’ll be joined by dancers from the Helen Wilman School of Dance who have nurtured generations of the town’s dancers. Back by popular demand are the dancers from Accrington Academy & Hyndburn Academy who will be making the short trip across the border from Lancashire.
Old Time Rags will be joining in the fun offering an interactive show with a vaudevillian flair. One Man band Laurence Marshall and percussive dancer Phoebe Douthwaite present an energetic array of skilful performances so expect honking horns, duelling banjos, dazzling tap dancing, slapping spoon playing a world famous broom dance. There will also be lots of delicious ices courtesy of Park Life Café’s pop up stand.
The spectacular will build up to a rousing finale with the New York Brass band who are North Yorkshire’s only contemporary New Orleans inspired brass band. In an era where many bands play along to a track this lot guarantee 100% live, brash brass, and their many festival highlights include jamming with Rick Astley at the Rewind 80s festival.
Arts festival Artistic Director Helen Meller told the HebWeb, “Every year we put on Street Sunday for free as a thank you to all our supporters and to bring people into town to check out the many local businesses who sponsor us. We’ve booked some great acts this year who tell us they love working alongside our talented local performers.”
