Tuesday, 8 August 2017

Held over last weekend (5th-6th August), the Vintage Weekend organised by Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge has, once again, been a resounding success, raising up to £30,000 for local, national and international good causes and charities.

Vintage Car Weekend

Saturday's best in show

We are always delighted how entrants and spectators give us tremendous feedback and support in our fund raising efforts, flocking into the show and the town during the weekend.

Our Facebook page has been full of positive comments. Here are a couple of examples:

It was a lovely day out with my old car, mixing with like minded people well versed in the subjects of engine oil, sprockets and fuel filters. The depth of knowledge is astounding and to see so many people's pride and joy on display made it all worth while.

Enjoyed every moment . Privileged to see cars that have a story and character...wow, that travelled the road decades ago...and still in good shape!! Privileged to meet an ol timer and his beloved motorcycle from the 1920's ! My daughters also loved the Jazz band ! Sat right in front eating their chips and being entertained! Lol

A chilly start on the Saturday turned into a beautiful sunny day and the crowds responded making it a record Saturday for the event. This is the day to come and see the vehicles you were brought up with, lovingly restored by their owners. Best in show on Saturday was a spectacular 1992 Morgan, owned by Geoffrey Bailey of Cleckheaton, I was impressed personally by Morgan Fielding from Rishton who gave me a lift around to the winner's enclosure in his orange Corvette Stingray.

A new innovation this year was the introduction of a food court which proved a great success.

Sunday's best in show

Sunday's weather was not quite as good as Saturday, leading up to a rain shower around 4 o'clock, this did not however spoil anybody's day except those of us who got a little wet during the clear up operation. Best in show Sunday was a Chevrolet Courvier, to the obvious delight of owner Kevin Buckley from Manchester.

To put on such a show takes an awful lot of planning and work, indeed we will be back at work next month planning next year's event with our dedicated team in each of their specialist areas. This year's event leader was Bede Mullen, his first time as leader. Bede has really done a great job this year taking over the reins from Dave Clegg.

There are many people to thank for their efforts in making this such an enjoyable and successful event, our sponsors Thomson Reuters, J A Whitehead Ltd, Murts Motor Centre, CN Trading, Calderdale Self Storage Ltd, Beaver Tree Services, Creswells, Mud UK, Microsearch Laboratories Ltd. Craggs Country Business Park, BCA Group and Hebden Royd Town Council.

The help and support we receive for the event from Calderdale Council gets stronger every year. Local businesses are amazing in their response to our sometimes bizarre requests like 'can you deliver a ton of top soil in the next ten minutes' or 'can you just knock us up a banner, we don't know the size though!', BRG Plant Hire Ltd, Mytholmroyd Builders Merchants, Environment Agency, Pennine Signs, Northern Rail, Krel Properties Ltd and  Suez/Sita at Eastwood depo, all showed great support.

Thanks also to yourselves at Hebden Bridge Times and Halifax Courier for your help in putting together a tremendous programme this year. Also to HebWeb and the many other sites who helped us with our publicity and the great support we receive every year in distribution of flyers at Tesco, Halifax and Sowerby Bridge, Morissons, Halifax and Todmorden and Sainsbury in Halifax.

We hope the businesses in Hebden had a great weekend after kindly displaying our posters and flyers. Thanks also to my fellow Rotarians, their wives' partners and friends who worked tirelessly to put on the event. Most of all though thanks to our entrants and the general public for their continued support, without you we would not have an event.
Having raised so much, we are now eager to donate, so please, if you are a member of, or know of an organisation or charity please get in touch with the Rotary club of Hebden Bridge, we are happy to help and maintain the Rotary motto of services over self.
