Hiroshima Day Commemoration

On Sunday, Calder Valley for CND for Peace and Justice held a commemoration of Hiroshima Day, the 72nd anniversary of dropping A-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the Wavy Steps in Hebden Bridge. A choir from Calder Valley Voices and the Taize Singers sang appropriate songs and there were several readings.

A highlight was Jonathan Timbers, past Mayor of Hebden Royd, reading the speech made by the Mayor of Hiroshima that morning which laid particular emphasis on the importance of the recent UN resolution passed by122 countries to include nuclear weapons in the existing bans on chemical and bacteriological weapons. Britain boycotted talks on this resolution. Hebden Royd Council is a member of Mayors for Peace which includes over 7000 towns and cities around the world, many of whom held similar rallies.
The gathering concluded with a call for those who support nuclear disarmament to join the group ( email Kathy or telephone Catherine on 07980 291478) and a joint reading of a peace declaration.
