Canal Trust Podcast on Alternative Christmas Celebrations
Saturday, 13 August 2016
The Canal and River Trust is a UK charity and guardian of 2,000 miles of historic waterways across England and Wales. The organization is tasked with caring for the nation's third largest collection of listed structures, as well as museums, archives, and hundreds of important wildlife sites. Waterfront is the Canal and River Trust membership programme.
Waterfront is also the online home of the supporters' magazine of The Canal and River Trust. They have launched a new monthly podcast with some very special guests and an episode dedicated to the Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd Alternative Christmas celebrations.
In their podcasts, they meet experts, authors, musicians and enthusiasts, and exploring some of the stories and heritage around our historic waterways. It is presented by Sony-award winning David Bramwell.
Special guests for Season One include authors Melissa Harrison, Dixe Wills and Tristan Gooley (The Natural Navigator and How to Read Water) QI's John Mitchinson and award-winning folk singer Sam Lee. Comedy fans will even be treated to occasional appearances from canal-loving comedian John Shuttleworth.
Episode Two of Waterfront (released August 15th) focuses on the community around Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd who, ravaged by floods in the winter of 2015, decided the only thing to do was postpone Christmas until June 25th.
In this episode, David Bramwell dons his best Santa outfit and joins them for the celebrations. Amongst a sound collage of brass bands, choirs and the occasional bagpipe, David unearths the moving stories of those whose businesses and homes were flood-damaged and the extraordinary generosity of those who helped the local area recover, from biker gangs to Canal and River Trust volunteers. This is an incredible story of the power of community spirit.
