Waste and recycling changes from August

Changes to the way in which waste and recycling services are delivered to Calderdale residents are to take place from 1 August 2016.

New services will be introduced for Calderdale residents, which will allow people to recycle more materials at the kerbside.

Under the terms of its new eight year contract with Calderdale Council, SUEZ recycling and recovery UK will introduce 17 new recycling vehicles.The new vehicles have increased capability to deliver a wider range of recycling options, enabling an expansion of the range of services available to Calderdale residents.

As well as cans, glass bottles, jars, plastic bottles, newspapers, magazines, textiles and food, people will soon be able to recycle corrugated cardboard, plastic pots, tubs and trays, Tetra Pak cartons and small electrical equipment.

There will also be changes to the way these materials are collected. Under the present system, residents are asked to place glass and recyclable cans in a black recycling box. From 1 August residents should place glass in their recycling box alongside corrugated cardboard and small electrical items. Cans will be collected in the white sacks, along with the different plastics.

SUEZ will also be broadening the recycling collection services it delivers to flats, increasing the range of materials collected to include plastics, cardboard and Tetra Pak cartons.

As so much more will be collected on the weekly recycling service, residents who do not have a wheelie bin but receive a sack collection instead, will see a slight reduction in the amount of waste that is taken on their fortnightly refuse collection, which will be a maximum of four bags. This is comparable to the current wheelie bin capacity.

In order to deliver all of these new services efficiently and to take into account growth in housing and population over the last decade, there will be widespread changes to the day that waste and recycling is collected for a large number of residents. Whilst these changes will help to ensure that waste and recycling is carried out as effectively as possible, it could mean that some residents experience a one-off delay in the time between their refuse collections as a result of the changes to collection days. The Council will contact those directly affected.

People will still be able to recycle weekly, no matter how few items they're putting out for collection.

Cllr Barry Collins, Calderdale Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said, "Calderdale residents do a great job of recycling. They told us they wanted to recycle more items and we're really pleased to be providing this improved service, which will build on our successful work with SUEZ. It will be even easier for us all to do our bit for the environment, and will help to save money as it's more cost effective for the Council.

"We're keeping residents informed of all the changes – information is being sent to every home, and people are welcome to come along to one of our roadshows to find out more and ask questions."

Nick Browning, SUEZ General Manager – Municipal Operations said, "The changes being introduced from the start of August will expand the range of materials that residents are able to recycle at the kerbside, broaden the range of materials that residents living in flats are able to recycle and deliver improved efficiencies through the introduction of changes to the day on which many residents have their waste and recycling collected.

"As with any change of this nature, there will be a period in which people adjust and some may also experience an initial period of disruption. Whilst we have planned for this and prepared measures to limit the impact of any disruption, we ask residents for their patience as we implement changes that will deliver long term benefits and cost savings to the Borough through an improved waste and recycling collection service for everyone."
