Pennine Community Power supports flood victims
Monday, 8 February 2016
Pennine Community Power (PCP) agreed at their AGM to make a donation of £1400 to the flood victims in Calderdale. The money is the surplus from operation of PCP's community wind turbine at Blackshaw Head. PCP is a community benefit society with 65 local members. The donation has been made to the Flood Aid fund being managed by Community Foundation For Calderdale (CFFC).
PCP's previous surpluses have been paid into a separate fund with Community Foundation For Calderdale. PCP encourages local organisations involved in natural flood management to apply for a grant from this fund. Information on applications is available on CFFC's website.
"PCP was set up to share the success of the wind turbine for the wider benefit of the community. We are pleased to be able to contribute in a small way to helping people and businesses in the Calder Valley to recover from the floods. We are also keen to support efforts to improve flood resilience and minimise the future effects of global warming." said Dr Mark Simmonds, Chairman of PCP after the meeting.
The AGM received an update on Pennine Community Power's work to increase their activities to grow the benefits to the community. These included development of projects for a 10kW PV solar panel system at a local school. We are also looking for buildings with a large roof, high energy use and three-phase electricity nearby where the owner would like to have PV solar panels on the roof funded through a community share offer.
After the AGM, Pennine Community Power had a public meeting with two speakers: Louise Marix Evans from local sustainability consultancy Quantum Strategy & Technology on research they have conducted on the impact of government policies for community energy projects.
Jez Tweed from Calderdale Community Energy spoke about the projects CCE is involved in. Pennine Community Power is one of the founding members of Calderdale Community Energy along with Calderdale Council and The Alternative Technology Centre in Hebden Bridge.
