Valley OrganicsWorkers' Coop celebrates first successful year

Monday, 9 June 2014

Saturday's torrential rain did not stop the birthday celebrations in the Valley Organics shop in Market Street on Saturday 7th June after a successful first year trading as a workers' co-operative. Workers handed out free cake and drinks to customers and this is what they told the HebWeb:

Ben Oubridge  said "It's been an amazing journey from raising the funds to buy the shop to running the business from day to day."

"Hebden Bridge is a very special place – much of our success is due to the wonderful support from our customers, they appreciate that we stock as much local produce as possible," said Alex Lawrence.

"Hebden Bridge saw England's first workers co-op set up 140 years ago at Nutclough Mill and we are building on that tradition," said Kerry McQuade. "Since we took over, takings have increased, the shop is now open for more hours every day and we are able to employ more workers."

Three new workers - Ellie, Katherine and Lili - have just joined the Co-op bringing the total to eight.

"The shop was buzzing on Saturday and the customers certainly enjoyed the amazing cakes! – I'm very much looking forward to working here," said Lili Briggs.

All the co-op members are involved in running the business, and are paid at the same rate.
