Kerbside Lives On

Few will forget Kerbside, the organisation that pioneered recycling in Calderdale. It was put out of operation when SITA UK was awarded waste and recycling contract by Calderdale Council.

The public also donated a lot of money to help Kerbside maintain its operation whilst continuing its fight to protect the jobs of its socially disadvantaged workforce. In the end, Kerbside had to concede defeat but it had some surplus funds, which its Directors decided should be invested in a trust. This is now known as the Kerbside Fund, which has just opened its second round of grant applications to organisations and community groups in Calderdale.

The fund is managed through the Community Foundation for Calderdale and further donations are welcome. Significant donations from Pennine Pack and Calder Mediation were gratefully received.

Trustee Paul Brannigan said: "People know what Kerbside was about – an environmental movement which, uniquely, embraced the idea that human resources were being wasted as well as material ones – hence the determination to provide work and training for the long term unemployed whilst recycling almost anything – the scope for applicants is, therefore, very wide, but priority will be given to those that benefit the environment or employment for those who have barriers to employment."

The Kerbside Fund is open to charitable groups for projects and activities taking place in Calderdale grants of between £250 & £1200 are available

Applications for funding can be made online at www.cffc.co.uk and will be considered by Paul and former members of the Kerbside Board. The initial deadline for applications is 30th April 2014 and a response can be expected by the end of May 2014.
