Ursula Holden Gill receives storytelling award

Monday, 1 October 2012

Ursula Holden Gill has won the award for Best Newcomer at the 2012 National Storytelling Awards ceremony in York. Well known for her television and theatre acting, she has become a star of the local and national storytelling scene in the last few years, receiving a prolonged standing ovation at the Festival of the Edge festival in the summer.

The Shaggy Dog club (based at Stubbing Wharf) were delighted to have three nominees shortlisted for awards. Despite creating and performing her brilliant Goosewing series in 2011, audiences still voted Christine McMahon's set onto the shortlist for the 2012 award. Rod Dimbleby deservedly made the shortlist for the trailblazer award for his dialect stories delivered to a wide range of local community groups.

The Shaggy Dog Club has been nominated for the Best Club award to be judged in 2013. Its Irish season continues next month with a performance by the brilliant Claire Murphy.

Shaggy Dog Storytellers nominated for award

Thursday, 13 September 2012

Members of the popular Shaggy Dog Storytellers Club, who hold monthly sessions at the Stubbing Wharf, have been nominated for awards in recognition of their talents.

Christine McMahon is one of the favourites to receive the Best Performance award for 'Goosewing' which she performed at the annual storytellers gathering, the Festival at the Edge in Much Wenlock as well as at Stubbing Wharf - home of the Shaggy Dog club.

Ursula Holden Gill has brought her long recognised acting talents to the new discipline of storytelling. Ursula adds dancing and musicianship to the usual array of storytelling skills. Her distinctive tales are a mixture of autobiography and tales ancient and modern. She is a strong contender for the Best Newcomer award.

Club treasurer Rod Dimbleby has been nominated for the trailblazer award in recognition of his work with a wide range of community groups and for his re-enlivening of dialect tales set in the not too distant past. Rod has gained a great reputation for his work with older people and audience members often thank him for helping to bring the past back to life for them. His tales are packed with humour and even offcomers have been known to delight in them!

The Shaggy Dog club has also been nominated for the Best Club award. The club has been in existence for the past 20 years and meets on the final Friday of each month (apart from December), often to packed houses.

The awards are based on voting and on the Shaggy Dog Storytellers website Chairman Richard Hemingway urges members to vote for our three star performers or for other visiting tellers. The Club category will be adjudged over the next 12 months, but the individual awards will be presented in York at the end of the month.
