Bulky waste collections charges start Monday, 1st October
Thursday, 27 September 2012
Calderdale will charge for all Bulky Household Collections from Monday 1st October. From Monday there will be a standard charge of £10 per collection for bulky household waste, e.g. tables, chairs, beds, TV's etc which were previously collected for free. It is a standard £10 regardless of how many bulky items are included in the collection and all items must be outside and accessible.
Existing charges for fridges, freezers and fridge-freezers remain at £18.30 per item.
Neighbours could club together from a few houses and share the cost of £10 by putting all of the bulky items to be collected outside one address for removal.
£10 charge for bulky waste collections
Wednesday, 8 August 2012
Calderdale's Cabinet has agreed to the introduction of a £10 charge for collection of bulky waste in Calderdale from the 1st October 2012.
A report which looked at bulky waste collection services of 35 other Metropolitan Councils found that 28 already charged for the bulky waste collection service. Calderdale is one of only two Authorities with no current restrictions in place.
The current service is used by 8% of households in the Borough and costs the Council around £500,000 per annum.
Councillor Barry Collins, Cabinet Member for Economy and Environment, said
"Given the current economic circumstances we have to carefully examine all of our service provision. By introducing this modest charge we can save nearly £300,000 for the tax payer and still deliver an efficient well regarded service."
Mark Thompson, Head of Housing and Environment said
"The bulky waste service is part of a wider waste collection service which has seen recycling increase from 26% three years ago to 44% now. Re-use and recycling of materials can help keep down the need to use bulky waste services".
