Census results show increase in Calderdale's population

The first results from the 2011 Census show a significant increase in Calderdale's population.
The population of Calderdale is 203,800 according to figures released on 16 July 2012 by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
There were 104,200 females and 99,600 males resident in Calderdale on Census day, 27 March 2011.
Comparison with the 2001 Census shows there has been a significant increase in the borough's population over the past 10 years – about 11,400 people or 5.9%.
The population of West Yorkshire, as well as England and Wales, has increased by 7.1%.
The male population of Calderdale has increased by 7.1%, compared with an increase of 4.8% for the female population.
The overall number of pensioners (65+) in the borough has risen to 32,400 – an 8% increase compared to the number in 2001, and the working age population (15 to 64) has also increased by 8%, to 133,900. However, the number of children and young people (0 to 14) has fallen by 2.5% to 37,500.
There has been an increase of 9.5% in the number of households in Calderdale, to 88,600. This is a larger rise than that for England and Wales (7.9%) and West Yorkshire (8.0%).
The Census results are important as they will provide a baseline for assessments of need in the borough and financial support from government sources.
These are the first results from the 2011 Census – more detail will be available in November 2012.
At present ONS has only released national data by gender and single year of age, figures for each region and local authority by gender in five-year age groups, and estimates of occupied households at national, regional and local authority level.
When the detailed results are available, the Council will produce a Census Digest analysing a range of Census data – ethnicity, employment, health and households – by ward.
