Flood-hit businesses can get help

Flood-hit businesses in the Calder Valley are being told how they can apply for a share of the Council's £250,000 Rise Fund.

The Recovery Investment for a Stronger Economy (RISE) Fund is drawn from the Council's Economic Fighting Fund.

It is being used to provide short term help to get businesses back up and running, but will also consider longer-term support to ensure that the businesses are sustainable.

Small to medium-sized businesses in the Calder Valley that were adversely affected by the floods and suffered loss of stock, loss of business, damage to business premises can apply, as can businesses wanting to install specialist barriers and similar equipment.

Eligible items include the cost, or part cost, of:

• Works to get the business trading after a period of closure due to the 2012 floods.
• Marketing and promotion of the business to reduce the impact of business closure and reduced trade as a result of the 2012 floods.
• Minor capital works or equipment, such as the installation of flood barriers in the business premises and/or other associated insurer-approved equipment to reduce the impact of future floods. (Please ensure your landlord and insurers approve all new equipment and installations).
• Repair or replacement of business equipment, fixtures, machinery and equipment essential to the business operation.
• Other works that are essential to getting the business trading after floods.

Grants will be paid on a first come basis.

Calderdale Council's Leader, Cllr Tim Swift, says the money will provide flood-hit businesses with much-needed help.

"The communities of the Calder Valley have responded to the recent floods magnificently, with businesses and householders helping one another with practical help. But many businesses need short term cash to help them get back on their feet.

"That's why we're offering modest grants, which will see them over the worst."

Calderdale Council's Deputy Leader, Cllr Janet Battye, says: "I know that there are many businesses out there which need a helping hand and we feel that it is up to the Council to take a lead.

"These grants could make all the difference to businesses which are doing their best to bounce back."
