Owter Zeds headline Trades Club 30th bash
Sunday, 27 May 2012
Psychedelic rock legends the Owter Zeds headline a weekend of festivities celebrating the Trades Club's 30th birthday. The Zeds formed to play to play a one off miner's benefit during the 1984/85 strike, but since then have played numerous times at the members run Holme Street venue.
"Of all the local bands we have put on over the year the Zeds have played the most for a variety of good causes so they were the obvious choice as headliners," says party organiser Dave Boardman.
The club has had good times and ridden out bad times thanks to the unwavering support from the local community, and this free event on June 3 and 4 is a thank you from the club to the people of the Calder Valley.
Hebden Bridge residents and folk royalty Steve Tilston and Becky Unthank are also on the bill. Steve is fresh from picking upa BBC Folk Awards Original Song Writer of the Year gong, and has run a series of popular folk nights at the club. The Trades has been a huge supporter of the The Unthanks during their rise to stardom, booking them when they were an unknown four piece and putting on sell out shows at the Picture House.
The Trades has always been a centre of political debate and their old friend Will Kaufman is back with his tribute to socialist troubadour Woody Guthrie.
The club is also repaying their debt to local bands that have played benefits for the club by putting on Fez, Creedy, Pepperjam and a special one off Mini Cabaret with Bernard Otter, featuring Neal Alexander's Magic Show.
"In the present tough climate making our 30th birthday is a massive achievement and we wanted to share our anniversary with all our friends and we are throwing out an open invitation to people along the valley who have always been there for us.
"We've put together a bill that represents everything that is great about the Trades with something for everyone and we will be announcing a top line up of local DJs next week."
