Maia and BrouHaHa at the Trades
Yet another fantastic show at the Trades Club, Hebden Bridge. Local band Maia’s first headline show at the club is promising to be one of their best yet.
Based around a love of folk, Talking Heads and David Bowie, they
encompass an eclectic mix of styles and song structures, with the ability
to emote and surprise in equal measure. Although the songs are underpinned with traditional folk guitar, many of them are embellished with lively brass. The lads decided to form a band during a night out in Huddersfield and quickly went on to record their first album under the supervision of producer Choque Hosein.
They have slowly brought their unusual style to audiences by supporting the likes of Anais Mitchell, The Hut People, Jamie Smith's Mabon and Chumbawamba as well as performing at The Unthanks end of tour party at the Trades Club and appearing at festivals up and down the country. Their touring has already built up a considerable reputation since an acclaimed performance at the 2011 Cambridge Folk Festival and has led to a residency at London’s monthly Folke Newington night.
The Unthanks links continue as Becky Unthank’s boyfriend Andrew Sizer plays electric mandolin with support act BrouHaha, an up and coming Manchester band, who are predicted to make their name this year. Having formed in the latter part of 2011, they have been impressing audiences with their unique blend of styles incorporating folk, ska, indie, pop and more. Quite literally, they are a BrouHaHa!
Promoter Dave Boardman described this as a gig featuring a band everyone will have heard of later this year supported by a band they’ll all know shortly after that.
