Seedy Saturday from Calder Food Hub

Friday, 1 April 2011

From Alan McDonald of Calder Food Hub

Swap seeds and knowledge at Calder Food Hub's second Seedy Saturday plant and seed exchange at the Hope Baptist Church on Saturday 9th April.

Seedy Saturday

Have you got more seeds that you can possibly use in your garden this year? Would you like a greater variety of seeds and plants without spending any more money? Following the success of last year's event, Calder Food Hub will be holding its second 'Seedy Saturday' plant and seed exchange at the Hope Baptist Church on Saturday 9th April. Please bring any unwanted seeds or plants, particularly fruit, vegetables and herbs for swapping. Alternatively just bring yourself and a willingness to grow things.

"The afternoon promises to be a vibrant mix of seed and plant swapping, advice on seed saving, plus seed sowing and craft activities for children" says Kath Baker of Calder Food Hub. "Seeds are incredibly expensive to buy, and generally there more in a packet than we can use in our small gardens here. Seedy Saturday gives people the opportunity to try new varieties without spending a fortune."

Calder Food Hub will be running their popular "How does your Garden Grow" competition again this year, to encourage people with small growing spaces, such as backyards, windowsills and tiny gardens to have a go at growing food. Competition entry forms will be available to pick up at Seedy Saturday. "We have been fortunate enough to receive money from the Big Food Fund recently so the day will also serve as the launch party for our 'Information and Resource Hub', which includes an exciting new website and improved membership scheme".

Seedy Saturday is on the 9th April 12-4pm at Hope Baptist Church in Hebden Bridge. Admission is £1. Delicious homemade soup, cakes and refreshments will be available throughout the event.
