Calderdale Council give 125 year lease for Town Hall

Tuesday, 26 October 2010

Town HallHebden Bridge Community Association is to have ownership of Hebden Bridge Town Hall for the next 125 years, Calderdale council's Cabinet decided tonight.

The move to extend the current 40-year leasehold agreement with the council has been warmly welcomed by trustees of the 600-strong Association.

Andrew Bibby, one of the trustees of the Association, says: "This is a strong endorsement of the way in which community management of the Town Hall has been operating since asset transfer in April. It will also enable us to access major funding for improving and extending the Town Hall building from the Communitybuilders fund."

The asset transfer of Hebden Bridge's landmark Town Hall, constructed in 1897-1898 and a listed building, was one of the first examples in the country of a Town Hall passing into community ownership and control.
