Bands support The Great Generation Project
on Saturday 13th March 7.30pm
Brass band fans are in for a treat this weekend with Hebden Bridge Junior Band teaming up for a one-off concert with the Cambridge University Brass Band. The student band is up North for a series of gigs and this Saturday they play with the Hebden Bridge Junior Band at the Ted Hughes Theatre at Calder High School in Mytholmroyd. The connection between the two bands is former Hebden tenor-horn player Alice Griffiths, currently a second year vet student at St Catharine’s College.
Tour organiser Kirsty Upham said they were very much looking forward to the concert.
"We’re coming up North because we have a disproportionately large number of northern people in the band compared to the rest of Cambridge," said Kirsty, who’s from Bolton.
"The band’s northerners have developed a lot of solidarity and have "northern meet-ups" during the holidays! Brass banding is more of a northern tradition, I guess — a lot of our southern members come from wind bands or orchestras. So bascially the band northerners are looking forward to showing the southerners how infinitely superior the north is, how much cheaper the pubs are, dispeling stereotypes etc!"
Hebden Bridge Junior Band chair Marc Collett said the band was delighted to have clinched such a "coup" and that the concert promised to be an evening to remember. It will also be raising funds for Calder High School’s The Great Generation project, which involves sixth form students and staff spending time in Kampala, Uganda working with the local community there. Amongst the good work they’ve carried out has been the transformation of a rubbish dump into a children’s play area and meeting hall, and the cultivation of land into model gardens to allow the communities to become more self-sufficient.
Students need to raise £1,200 each for their place, £500 comes from their own individual contribution and the rest through school events.
Tickets for the brass band concert cost £6 and £4 (concessions) and can be bought in advance through Hebden Bridge Junior Band or call treasurer Robin Hoyle on Halifax 832826. There will be a limited number of tickets only available on the night.
