Wild Flowers in Canalside
From Ms. P. Finch
Tuesday 6 August 2024
The canalside plants in Todmorden from Library Lock to Woodhouse have been exceptional this year.
It is all thanks to the hard work of several people in groups like the Upper Calderdale Wildlife Network and Incredible Edible.
Some years the Canal River Trust cutting regime is over zealous and beautiful areas like this are wiped out.
Admittedly areas around lock gates and for mooring need a cut for safety but not on stretches inbetween.
Hard work over many years by Upper Calderdale Wildlife Network* liaising with the Canal and River Trust has ensured the rich biodiversity isn't lost on several stretches (see blue post markers) including at Lightbank Lock, Walsden and further afield at Brearley and Mytholmroyd.
Wild flowers that can be seen, many of which are medicinal, incude Oxeye daisy, Skullcap, Meadow sweet, Gypsywort, Wild angelica, Valerian, Water mint, Self heal and many others. Lets hope they continue to thrive.
*Meets once a month in a Todmorden pub. Further info tel. 01706-816698
