General election win

From Alan Truman

Wednesday 10 July 2024

Let me be the first on here to congratulate our new MP Josh Fenton Glynn, a Hebden lad himself and Calder High graduate. He has already been representing the Area as a local councillor for 8 years.

I wish him all the best and I hope he uses his, and his governments large majority wisely.

After 14 years of Tory it was cheering to see him get a record breaking majority, and thanks to tactical voting and many Tories sitting on their hands, this was achieved with a smaller vote share nationally.

A note of caution to vote reformers though, PR could well have delivered countless dozens of fascist Reform MPs. I pray honesty, trust and integrity can be returned to national politics. From what I have seen so far those I speak to already far on all sides of the political spectrum are being provided reassurance. Good riddance to Craig Whittaker

From Allen Keep

Sunday 14 July 2024

I'll leave it to others more invested in the parliamentary process than I to challenge Alan's defence of the first past the post system.

I'm not sure what record JFG has broken? Alan's claim does remind me of the chap who wrote to the Guardian many years ago claiming to have broken 20 world records over the weekend including the 17metre dash while running for a bus. What I do know is that Josh is a very lucky boy indeed.

Alan refers to "honesty, trust and integrity". I don't now quite who he is speaking to but these are not words I am hearing about our new Prime Minister, quite the reverse.

The parents/carers of children in poverty are not feeling reassured I expect, nor the Junior Doctors, nor any workers hoping for a well-deserved pay rise under the Government they have just elected. I doubt whether environmentalists (or Tories on bikes/NIMBYS as Alan likes to refer to them) here or nationally are feeling reassured either?

Big business will be feeling comfortable I'm sure as Labour falls over itself to reassure the ruling class that this will be the most pro-business Labour Government in history.

And so, of course, will the genocidal state of Israel as it continues to annihilate the people of Gaza as it steps up its barbarity each day since this "record-breaking" election. This will be a "socialist" government that will bring no hope whatsoever to Palestinians or their supporters here but will warm the cockles of Netanyahu's black heart and those fascists that Alan is so worried about that are calling the shots in this government.

But wait, Starmer gives us some "reassurance" as he said this recently.

"There can be no justification for these attacks. Attacking innocent children is the most depraved of actions"

Of course, he wasn't talking about the daily slaughter of Gazan children. Not a single word of condemnation has been uttered about that by this landslide socialist government since the election.

In the paradise of a now Labour constituency and a Labour run country why would any of us care about the lives of Palestinian people.

It's not as if they are Ukrainian, is it?
