Hebden Bridge Matters magazine - unethical?

From Jon B

Tuesday, 26 February 2013

I don't know if any local businesses/ tradespeople are aware of this, but it transpires that the new(ish) "Hebden Bridge Matters" free magazine, is not paying any of its contributors/ photographers/writers on the premise that it is a community-based magazine. Far from it. It is actually a 'for profit' magazine run by a company called Hibu.com. You may remember them better as Yell.com.

They contacted me today to see if I'd be interested, as a tradesman, in advertising. I initially expressed an interest (this was prior to discovering the above!), and they told me they would need to run an 'ID check' before they would let me advertise. This seems wholly excessive, and, I would say, quite unusual.

Needless to say, I have not taken them up on their offer.

Have any other local businesses or tradespeople had contact from this company? I'd be interested in hearing if I'm not alone in my distrust of them.
