Why 20mph, why not try 25mph? Not as much impact but still safer!

It would be good to actually hit 20mph, along Burnley Road / Calderdale at the moment.

I imagine 20mph has been set as a suitable lower limit for residential and shopping areas because of the level of additional safety it provides. In terms of danger to children hit by a vehicle, at 30mph half are killed, at 20mph only one in 20. I would like to see expansion of 20mph zones, with 20 becoming the default speed limit in most built-up areas. Then our streets might have a chance of becoming places where people live rather than mere thoroughfares for those hurrying to be somewhere else.

As far as I know Susan the reason for 20mph and not 25mph is because the speed has to be marked on your cars speedo. Most cars go in multiples of 10 unless you drive a posh car with a digital speedo, hence 20, 30, 40 etc. If you drive an American car there is usually a red line at 55mph, the national speed limit in America.
